Shen Yang, a professor at the School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University , said, “Sora represents a revolutionary leap in the field of AI-generated content (AIGC).”

As one of the leading scholars in AI research in China, Shen leads a team that studies the philosophy of AI. Until he learned about Sora on February 16, Shen was quite satisfied with his team’s AI-generated videos. A two-minute video on the Spring Festival produced by Shen’s team have recently won many likes on social media platforms. “Compared with the new model Sora, what we used are tools of the previous generation. There’s a huge gap in between," said Shen.

As a frequent user of AI, Shen said the technology not only helps improve his productivity, but also benefits his daily life. His wife was suffering from cancer and many complications, and he used AI to assist in finding treatment, which has remarkably prolonged her life. He even wrote an award-winning science fiction novel using AI.

However, new technologies do not mean good news to everyone. Many also concern about AI models’ safety issues since related regulations are lagging behind. 

Sora is going to bring changes in many fields, including short video, film and television, news, games, advertising, education, and even industrial manufacturing, according to Shen. There is still much room to improve AI models. For instance, current AI models are not capable of drawing characters accurately and quickly. Shop signs lack meaning in Sora’s demo video showing a woman walking down a street in Tokyo. But these problems are believed to be solved as models update.

After a few seconds, AI provides a piece of music for the user to download. Each user can create music tailored to his or her interest.

Some musicians use AI to achieve what they could not do on their own. For example, Yacht, an American pop group, has used AI to break out of their comfort zone and try to create something different from their previous songs. Soon they have their new album, which contains 10 songs, all of which are very popular.

The development of AI technology also comes with some concerns. Some human composers fear that their work might be replaced by a machine. Some others are worried about music itself and the music industry, as AI is now able to create music more and more similar to human-composed music.

Faced with this challenge, on one hand, human musicians need to remain creative; on the other hand, they should understand how to use these new tools to explore new frontiers. Perhaps the future role of the human musicians will be to focus on emotions, leaving the machines to take care of other procedures.

If asked, it can explain its reasoning and provide details. Many things that people use search engines for today, in short, can be done better with chatbots.

Will ChatGPT help students cheat better? Yes, but as with many other technology developments, it’s not a simple black and white situation. Decades ago, students could copy encyclopedia entries, and more recently, they’ve been able to search the Internet and explore into Wikipedia entries. ChatGPT offers new abilities for everything from helping with research to doing their homework for them. Many ChatGPT answers already sound like student essays. Ask the new artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT to write an essay about the cause of the American Civil War and you can watch it produce a persuasive term paper in a matter of seconds.

It can even (narrowly) pass a number of exams. It scored 60% on the United States Medical Licensing Examination, 70% on an exam for lawyers, 78% on New York state’s high school chemistry exam’s multiple choice section, and ranked the 40th on the Law School Admission Test.

A high school teacher concluded ChatGPT already writes better than most students today. 8 . Outer space is getting spicier, thanks to a new NASA initiative to add a little more flavor to astronauts’ diets.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are growing red and green chile peppers for the very first time. A team of researchers at the Kennedy Space Center planted 48 seeds in a device called a science carrier, which has clay for roots to grow in and a specially formulated controlled-release fertilizer. The device fixes into the Advanced Plant Habitat, one of three plant growth rooms onboard.

“The APH is the largest plant growth facility on the space station and has180 sensors and controls for monitoring plant growth and the environment,” said project manager Nicole Dufour. “It is a diverse growth room, and it allows us to help control the experiment from Kennedy, reducing the time astronauts spend tending to the crops.”

The peppers will spend about four months growing before they can be harvested and eaten, marking the first time astronauts have cultivated peppers on the station from seeds to maturity.

“It is one of the most complex plant experiments on the station to date because of the long germination and growing times,” said Matt Romeyn. “We have previously tested flowering to increase the chance for a successful harvest because astronauts will have to pollinate the peppers to grow fruit.” Researchers will monitor the growth of the peppers and compare them with a control group on Earth.

“The challenge is the ability to feed crews in low-Earth orbit, and then to sustain explorers during future missions beyond low-Earth orbit to destinations including the Moon and eventually to Mars,” Romeyn said. “We are limited to crops that don’t need storage, or extensive processing.”

“This is important because the food astronauts eat needs to be as good as the rest of the equipment. To successfully send people to Mars and bring them back to Earth, we will not only require the most nutritious foods, but the best tasting ones as well.”

10 . To date, 12 astronauts have walked on the lunar surface. While nobody has set foot on its surface since 1972, plans are in place to return people to the Moon soon. In order to increase our knowledge of the Moon and carry out experiments on its surface, people and machinery first need to be delivered there by lunar landers. One of these currently under development is the Blue Moon lander, created by privately funded aerospace producer Blue Origin. The company, which also focuses on space tourism, is owned by Jeff Bezos. Blue Moon wasn’t selected for NASA’s Artemis Moon missions, but Blue Origin hopes to use the lunar lander in future missions to achieve a sustained human presence in space.

The Blue Moon lander, which entered development in 2016, uses autonomous technology to land with high precision. Equipped with LIDAR (light detection and ranging) sensors, Blue Origin claims that its craft is guaranteed to land within 23 metres of the preplanned landing site. It scans the Moon by firing laser beams (激光束) at the surface to create a computerised image of the terrain (地形), which can prevent the lander from falling into danger and allows the flattest nearby surface to be chosen.

When in lunar orbit, the lander can release microsatellites into space. Once on the Moon, the lander will release other devices, such as rovers, from its top deck. The equipment that’s attached to the lander can be changed based on specific mission requirements. For Blue Moon landers with a human crew — and those returning equipment and lunar samples to Earth — a mounting capsule can be added. This launches from the Moon to travel back to Earth.
