文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。作者认为随着学习英语的人越来越多,英语有可能会演变成完全不同的语言。

3 . What country does English belong to? The answer seems obvious: Britain. But there are about 18 million or 40% of people in the European Union speaking English— much more than the combine population of those core English-speaking countries, such as Britain, Canada and Australia.

To make things more complex, the number of English-speakers born outside the tradition English-speaking countries grows every day and it is becoming not just a useful second language, but native one there. Already it is easy to find children in northern Europe who speak as though they come from America because they have been watching Hollywood films and TV programs, along with music gaming and social media.

Today, many learners still aim for an American or British standard. Textbooks instruct India English-speakers to avoid Indianisms such as “What is your good name?” for “What is your first name?”, or “I am working here for years.” instead of “I have been working here for years.” A guide to avoiding Europeanisms has long existed in European Union institutions to keep German-speakers from using “actual” to mean “current”, as it does in their language.

Given enough time, new generations of foreign language speakers contribute not just words but their own grammar to the language they learn. “I am working here for years.” is a mistake today, but it is not hard to imagine it becoming standard in the future in India. If this disturbs you, remember that this text is written in a language that was a mixture of French, Latin and others until it became an unrecognizably different tongue.

No language has ever reached more speakers than English. It is hard to predict how they will change it, but it is easy to rule out the possibility that they will not change it at all. But you can take comfort in the fact that such changes usually happen too slowly to affect comprehension in a single lifetime.

1. What phenomenon is described in the first two paragraphs?
A.The influence of the English-speaking countries.
B.The widespread use of English outside Britain.
C.The popularity of Hollywood films and TV programs.
D.The increasing importance of the European Union.
2. What is the author’s prediction about the Indianisms?
A.They will be officially replaced by standard English.
B.They will be accepted as standards by other countries.
C.They will be considered grammatically correct in India.
D.They will become a different language in the near future.
3. What does the author most likely want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.It is unavoidable for English to change over time.
B.English has been influenced by different languages.
C.English might be unrecognizable in one generation.
D.It is important to keep English from foreign influences.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To argue against the necessity of standard English.
B.To show his opinion on the changes of English.
C.To explain the causes behind language changes.
D.To call for more strict standards for English teaching.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。本文通过实验回答了互联网是否正在改变我们的记忆,以及如何改变这个问题。

4 . As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.

In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.

In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)”.

According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organise huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

1. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research?
A.We are using memory differently.
B.We are becoming more intelligent.
C.We have poorer memories than before.
D.We need a better way to access information.
2. Why does the passage begin with two questions?
A.To introduce the main topic.
B.To show the author’s attitude.
C.To describe how to use the Internet.
D.To explain how to store information.
3. What can we learn about the first experiment?
A.Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.
B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C.The first group did not try to remember the information.
D.The second group did not understand the information.
4. What do people do in transactive memory?
A.To keep the information in mind.
B.To change the quantity of information.
C.To organise information like a computer.
D.To remember how to find the information.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章结合社会环境和一个个案报道了网络乞丐这种新型的乞丐,并分析了人们对此的看法。

6 . As some cities start driving beggars from their major streets, some of the smarter ones have found a safer, more comfortable place to carry on — the Internet.

These “web beggars” go online with sad stories, and send out emails asking for money, according to a recent Beijing News report.

The paper published one example from a reader who had received it.

It said, “I’m from Chengdu. Dad died when I was a kid and Mum is seriously ill. My girlfriend has just dumped (丢下) me. I am so depressed that I cannot leave home. Would you please help me with 10 yuan for a meal?” The sender left the name Li Dan and a bank account number.

A reporter later contacted Li Dan through QQ, a Chinese Internet chat service. He said that he was 21 and had recently dropped out of college.

“I started begging by the Internet last December, just for fun,” he said. “But when I got the first 10 yuan in January, I decided to become a full-time web beggar.”

Li said he knew about 10 other web beggars in Chengdu. They all stayed at home to write emails and could probably send over 1,000 per day. They would exchange experience and thoughts over QQ or beggar websites.

The story got some reaction from the public. Some saw it as a fresh idea but others suspected (怀疑) that it was just another form of cheating.

In related news, Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, began to ban begging in eight of its major districts on Monday, according to the local media.

That caused a heated discussion about whether it violated (侵犯) beggars’ rights.

Most people supported the policy, repeating the old line that most beggars were not real beggars and that they annoyed people constantly, according to a newspaper poll (计票).

1. What do “web beggars” mean?
A.The beggars who have a net.
B.The beggars that ask for money by the Internet.
C.The beggars that like the Internet.
D.It’s a website which is controlled by some beggars.
2. Why are some beggars fond of the Internet?
A.Because the places where the beggars are allowed to beg are becoming fewer and fewer.
B.Because the Internet is safer and faster.
C.Because the Internet is so developed.
D.Because the beggars are not allowed to leave home.
3. Which of the following is NOT true?
A.Beggars can get some money from banks.B.Li Dan quit college.
C.Li Dan is a specialized beggar.D.Beggars have their own websites.
4. How did people feel about begging by the Internet?
A.It was another kind of cheating.B.It was a different idea.
C.It made people angry.D.A, B and C.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了作者掉落大海,就在想要放弃的时候最终获救的故事。

7 . I was hiking with Sam and Kyle to show them a cliff where they could feel the sea spray on their faces. I knew the area could be dangerous, but I was not worried for I had hiked there many times.

We sat in the sun and watched the waves throw themselves against the rock. Then I crept (爬) up to the edge, Kyle right behind me. I found a seat-shaped place and sat down with much contentment. When Kyle came near, I gave him my place. He settled in and I moved a few feet over where the smooth rock had no holds.

Suddenly, a monstrous wave came. I felt myself starting to slide. The water washed me off the cliff and forced me under. I screamed for help. I swam hard for the shore. I was not a strong swimmer but I tried rimming for shore anyway, battling the warm water the best I could. Soon, I realized the sea had swept me farther out.

“Sam!” I yelled. “Kyle, help me and send a helicopter!” After about thirty minutes, I saw a helicopter. I could see Sam and Kyle looking anxiously from it. My eyes lit up and my heart missed a beat. The helicopter buzzed overhead, and then kept on going. I floated on my back to make myself more visible, my body pale in contrast to the darker ocean. When the helicopter came by again, I moved my arms and legs desperately to attract their attention. Again, the helicopter disappeared. Helpless, I stared in disbelief as they missed seeing me twice in a row. Deciding that I needed to save my energy, I continued floating on my back and closed my eyes.

Gradually, a noise grew louder. I soon realized a helicopter was overhead. The crew had seen me, but it might be too late. Waves of exhaustion overwhelmed me. My leg muscles tightened uncontrollably. “This is it,” I thought, as I gave up to the weight that was pulling me down.

Then, I felt a strong arm wrap across my chest and turned to see a rescue diver. He asked me if I was alright. The next thing I knew was that I was in the air. The waves that had just been big enough to kill me suddenly seemed small.

1. Which of the following can best describe the author in paragraph 2?
A.Curious and careful.B.Happy and relaxed.
C.Proud but disappointed.D.Anxious but satisfied.
2. Why couldn’t the author swim back to shore?
A.He met with fast wind.B.He couldn’t perform his best.
C.He was not a strong swimmer.D.He was not used to the warm water.
3. What did the author do to increase his chances of being seen by the passing helicopter?
A.He tried to preserve his energy.B.He made his arms pale.
C.He yelled at the helicopter.D.He floated on his back.
4. What does the author’s thought “This is it” mean?
A.The disaster came to an end as expected.B.He finally got the rescue he needed badly.
C.He was convinced he was about to drown.D.The waves were not big enough to kill him.

文章大意:这一篇说明文。这篇文章介绍的是生态城市农场在美国的城市乡村越来越受欢迎,它如何运作,给环境带来的好处。

8 . City farms are gaining popularity in cities and towns around the United States.

Eco City Farm in Edmonston, Maryland, is located near shopping centers, car repair shops and homes. The neighborhood is a working-class community. People do not have very much money, and they have limited access to fresh food in markets. Over the past two years, the farm has attracted volunteers from the community like Marcy Clark. She schools her four children at home. On a recent day she brought them to Eco City Farm for a lesson. Alston Clark thinks his experience very valuable. “I like coming out here.” he says, “You know, you connect with the Earth, where your food comes from. You appreciate the food a little bit more.”

Margaret Morgan Hubbard started Eco City Farm. She thinks of it as a place where people can learn to live healthier lives. “Growing food in a community and showing that you can have farms even in the city is helpful to strengthen the relationship in that community and brings people together,” she says. “Every piece of what we do here is a demonstration to show people everything about how to have a sustainable community.” From the Eco City Farm people come to know that they are not only growing food and raising chickens and bees, but improving the soil with compost made from food waste. Sixteen wooden bins are filled with worms. Their job is to eat the food waste and help make it into compost.

Eco City Farm is an experimental operation. The farm gets its power not from the local electricity networks but from the sun with solar panels. 文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了养老院的老人总是觉得孤独和不被需要,法国有了一个把老人院和幼儿园结合在一栋楼里的想法,介绍了这一做法的好处。

9 . Six months before she died, my grandmother moved into an old people’s home and I visited her there. The room was clean and warm, and the care assistants were kind and cheerful. A general knowledge quiz show was on the television, and the only other sound was snoring. People moved only when they needed to be helped to the bathroom. It was disappointing. Grandmother talked a lot about how much she missed seeing her grandchildren, but I knew from my sister that they hated going to visit her there.

So I was interested to read a newspaper article about a new concept in old people’s homes in France. The idea is simple, but revolutionary — combining a residential home for the elderly with a nursery school in the same building. The children and the residents eat lunch together and share activities. In the afternoons, the residents enjoy reading or telling stories to the children, and if a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always a kind lap to sit on.

The advantages are huge for everyone concerned. The children are happy, because they get a lot more individual attention. The residents are happy because they feel useful and needed. And the staff are happy because they see an improvement in the physical and psychological health of the residents and have an army of assistants to help with the children.

Nowadays there is less and less contact between the old and the young in an increasing number of countries. There are many reasons for this, including the breakdown of the extended family, working parents with no time to care for ageing relations, families that have moved away, and smaller flats with no room for grandparents. But the result is the same-increasing numbers of children without grandparents and old people who have no contact with children, and more old people who are lonely and feel useless, along with more and more families with young children who desperately need more support. Ifs a major problem in many societies.

That’s why intergenerational programs, designed to bring the old and the young together, are growing in popularity all over the world.

1. What does the underlined word “residents” in paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A.Old people.B.School teachers.C.Assistants.D.Staff.
2. How were the old people at the home the author’s grandmother was in?
A.They felt lonely and useless.B.They weren’t allowed to be visited.
C.They weren’t looked after properly.D.They lived in a dirty and uncomfortable room.
3. What does the author think is a major problem in many societies today?
A.The extended family is broken down.
B.There isn’t much room for grandparents.
C.Working parents have no time to care for their children.
D.There isn’t much contact between the old and the young.
4. What will be probably talked about later in the passage?
A.Advice on how to communicate with children.
B.Plans for setting up more homes for old people.
C.Examples of successful intergenerational programs.
D.Ways of teaching entertainment skills to old people.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了在疫情期间,美国的学生返回课堂后问题行为增加,但面对面的教学也给帮助这些学生提供了机会。

10 . American students had been learning at home for more than a year during the pandemic (流行病). When they returned to in-person learning, teachers began to see more behavioral problems.

Sarah Potpinka is an art teacher at Putnam High School in Connecticut. She said she saw more fights and arguments among students online and in person. Some refused to wear the required face coverings. Other students broke school rules by leaving in the middle of class to meet up with friends. Obviously throughout this pandemic, the students spent a lot of time at home and because of that they lack in those social skills.

Bad behavior among students is part of what experts are calling a mental health crisis among children. Even before the pandemic, research found that bad behavior in the classroom was increasing.

A group of mental health organizations say in a recent Hopeful Futures Campaign report that one in three students reported feeling lonely or hopeless. Half of all mental illnesses are present by the age of 14 but few students get the services they need. The report, released last month, also warns that suicide is the second leading cause of death among those aged 14 to 18 in 2019.

Richard Douglas is a school psychologist at Putnam High School with over 30 years of experience.Douglas said that during the pandemic there have been many things that disrupt (破坏) families. More time at home could lead to more arguments with family members. Douglas feels school officials provide enough support to deal with the mental health crisis at Putnam. For the school of around just 250students, there is also a counselor, a social worker, and two recently hired interventionists (干预者). Interventionists help identify learning and behavioral problems among students.

Despite behavioral problems among students after returning to in-person classes, Potpinka said the change has been better for the students. She said it is easier to keep students engaged in schoolwork face to face. It is also easier to seek help for them when there is trouble.

1. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Bad behavior.B.Staying at home.C.The pandemic.D.Breaking school rules,
2. What does the data in the paragraph 4 show?
A.The absence of mental health services.B.The importance of the mental health report.
C.The development of depression in children.D.The seriousness of students’ mental problems.
3. What attitude does Potpinka hold towards students’ behavioral problems?
A.Uncaring.B.Worried.C.Optimistic.D.Doubtful.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.US Schools Struggle With Bad Behavior but See Opportunities
B.Hopeful Futures Campaign Released a New Report
C.Students Face Learning Challenges During the Pandemic
D.A Hidden Crisis Affecting Millions of Students
