1 . Favored by many internet influencers, the city of Zibo, once a sleepy industrial city, has gone viral on Chinese social media platforms. The topic Zibo “barbecue” on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, was played 4.96 billion times since the city stormed the Internet for over a month. On 29 April, Zibo Railway Station saw a record 87,000 train trips to and from the station, according to Chinese news website Caixin.

Local authorities in Zibo have been quick to respond to the sudden flow of visitors. A barbecue zone that can accommodate 10,000 people, featuring live band performances, was built overnight. Volunteers have been dispatched to the railway station to offer advice and recommendations to tourists. Designated (指定的) buses and trains bring tourists to and from the hottest barbecue spots. The government has even threatened to punish profiteering hotels who raise prices by more than 50% .

What makes Zibo barbecue so special is that it does offer a distinctive (独特的) dining experience. The skewers (烤串) are 70-80 percent cooked before they are brought to the table, where diners can finish cooking them on their own stoves, offering an immersive dining experience.

Zibo’s low prices are also appealing. Many college students in Shandong have made concrete plans to enjoy Zibo barbecue at the least cost, and traveling back and forth by train for only 200 yuan ($29.1). So what better way to attract adventurous, hungry college students with a tight budget other than “tasty barbecue that makes you full for only 50 yuan!”

The locals seem happy enough about the arrival of visitors and shy away from hot spots to make space for outsiders, saying they are proud that their hometown has gained nationwide fame.

2 . Fathers can give their children an educational advantage at primary school by reading, drawing and playing with them, according to a newly published report. Research led by the University of Leeds has found that children do better at primary school if their fathers regularly spend time with them on interactive engagement activities like reading, playing, telling stories, drawing and singing.

Analysing primary school test scores for five- and seven-year-olds, the researchers used a representative sample of nearly 5,000 mother-father households in England from the Millenium Cohort Study.

According to the research, dads who regularly drew, played and read with their three-year-olds helped their children do better at school by age five. Dads being involved at age five also helped improve scores in seven-year-olds’ Key Stage Assessments.

Dr Helen Norman, who led the research, said, “Mothers still tend to assume the primary care r role and therefore tend to do the most childcare, but if fathers enthusiastically engage in childcare too, it significantly increases the likelihood of children getting better grades in primary school. This is why encouraging and supporting fathers to share childcare with the mother, from an early stage in the child’s life, is critical.”

Dads’ involvement impacted positively on their children’s school achievement regardless of the child’s gender (性别), race, age in the school year and household income, according to the report.

There were different effects when mums and dads took part in the same activities—the data showed that mums had more of an impact on young children’s emotional and social behaviors than educational achievement.

The researchers recommend that dads carve out as much time as they can to engage in interactive activities with their children each week. For busy, working dads, even just ten minutes a day could potentially have educational benefits. They also recommend that schools and early years education providers routinely take both parents’ contact details (where possible) and develop strategies to engage fathers.

1. What can we learn about the research?
A.Mums had more impact on young children’s educational achievement.
B.Dads’ positive impact on kids learning had nothing to do with the gender.
C.Dads’ involvement at age 3 helped promote academic performance at age 7.
D.The researchers investigated nearly 5,000 single parent families in England.
2. Who may give his children the most educational advantage at primary school?
A.A father who is totally busy with his work.
B.A father who is really good at playing basketball.
C.A father who has absolutely low household income.
D.A father who actively shares childcare with the mother.
3. What advice do the researchers offer on children’s early years education?
A.Dads should spare ten minutes a day to apparently benefit kids.
B.Dads should maximize time to interact with their kids each week.
C.Schools should generate strategies to involve parents in management.
D.Schools should regularly contact parents to develop mother-engagement.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.It’s crucial that fathers can have a lasting impact on children.
B.Young children can get brilliant childhood with father-engagement.
C.Fathers and mothers should share childcare in family early education.
D.Young children do better at school if their dads read and play with them.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了网络漫画平台WEBTOON如何为独立艺术家提供机遇,以及它如何改变漫画行业的现状。

3 . A career in comics (漫画) is a dream for many talented, creative artists. It’s an opportunity to express one’s imagination through powerful stories. Traditionally, it was difficult, and sometimes expensive, to make it in the comic world. However, webtoons, comic platforms for viewing on the web and mobile devices, are changing the situation for independent artists. Artists can gain a following on webtoons platforms without having to depend on large publishing agents (代理商). It’s a fantastic opportunity for comic book lovers to find exciting new stories.

WEBTOON is the largest and most well-known webtoons platform, and it offers creators the chance to gain deals with famous agents and publishers. Some creators who got their start on WEBTOON have seen their stories adapted (改编) for TV series or movies. American Netflix has published two live-action adaptations of webtoons. 文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一种被称为“安静招聘”新的职场趋势即将到来。

4 . The term “quiet quitting” went viral last year, describing people who stay in their jobs but mentally take a step back—for example, working the bare minimum and not making their job the center of their lives. Now in 2023, there is a new workplace trend on the horizon, called “quiet hiring”.

Quiet hiring is a strategy used to fill the critical gaps in a company without hiring new employees. One company has a limited amount of talent and needs to make a call about where it’s going to have the best impact. This year it may need to add five more data scientists to its team to meet the strategic goals. As a solution, it may move five employees from another department only for a short time, like data analysts in the human resources and marketing department, into the five open data scientist roles.

In this case, the boss is saying, “We’re going to intentionally deprioritize (降低) support for HR and marketing for the next six months so that we can increase the productivity of our data science team, and we are saying this clearly. Everyone knows this.” The important distinction with quiet hiring is that a company is openly communicating with employees about its priorities and moving employees to areas that serve those priorities, instead of just loading employees with more work or simply hiring more people.

While being assigned to a new role may seem scary, quiet hiring should be beneficial to employees. If you were asked to take on additional responsibilities, it would indicate your value. Meantime you might say, “If it’s not possible to increase my payment, can we make it so that I can work from home five days a week, reducing my commute (通勤) costs? Or,could I work flexible hours, making it easier for me to live the rest of my life?” An individual conversation may be ineffective. If you’re part of a department or team being asked to switch roles, employ that power and approach human resources as a group.

1. What does the strategy of quiet hiring refer to?
A.Moving existing staff to new posts.B.Adding more positions.
C.Employing new talents secretly.D.Training new employees.
2. What is the feature of a company’s handling quiet hiring?
A.Innovations are highly valued.B.Employees are burdened with extra work.
C.Employees’ shifts are announced beforehand.D.Roles of departments are changed regularly.
3. What suggestion does the author offer to employees?
A.Balance between work and life.B.Take on new roles as a team.
C.Shoulder more duties on work.D.Negotiate on extra jobs.
4. Which is a suitable title for the text?
A.Hiring more or less?B.Quiet hiring: An upcoming tendency
C.Quiet hiring: A workplace debateD.Quiet quitting or quiet hiring?

6 . It's the last dream for many to move to a big city and make a shining new life.

But as we all know, metropolitan living comes at a cost, especially if you pick Hong Kong, Paris or London, which are the world's most expensive cities according to a new research.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)-which rates 133 global cities, and compares the price of a basket of 138 everyday items in each-has ranked them as joint top of the table.

The European cities have passed Singapore and Osaka, which tied with Hong Kong in the previous Worldwide Cost of Living Survey, carried out in March.

The changes are especially marked this time around, with the report doubling as an assessment of the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on prices around the world.

Singapore and Osaka are now down to fourth and fifth respective, with Tel Aviv tying with Osaka in fifth place. An exodus of foreign workers during the pandemic is behind Singapore's drop, which saw its population fall for the first time in 17 years, according to the EIU.

The top 10 is completed by Geneva, New York City, Copenhagen and Los Angeles.

The biggest rise is Tehran, which has climbed up the ladder from 106th to 79th, due to US sanctions impacting supplies. Reykjavik, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo show the biggest price drops. The EU owes the Brazilian cities' rankings to “weak currency and rising poverty levels”. Brazil, of course, has suffered hugely during the pandemic.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has caused the US dollar to weaken while western European and north Asian currencies have strengthened against it, which in turn has shifted prices for goods and services " said Upasana Dutt, head of worldwide cost of living at the EIU.

“The pandemic has changed consumer behaviour, as lockdowns such as working from home have increased the prices of consumer electronics and at-home-meals have taken the place of restaurant dining for middle-class families ."

As for the future, things don't look wonderful. The EIU predicts that the trends will continue, with people cautious about spending and sure to struggle to make ends meet during 2021.

1. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A.Living in Hong Kong means living a happy life.
B.The pandemic forces people to work at the office and eat meals at home.
C.People in Brazilian cities enjoy rising living standards because of the biggest price drop.
D.Singapore and Osaka used to tie with Hong Kong in the Worldwide Cost of Living Survey.
2. The underlined word “exodus” is close in meaning to________.
A.dramatic increaseB.sudden arrival
C.leave in massD.journey out of Egypt.
3. What is the basic cause of the changes, according to the research?
A.Population fall.B.The weaken US dollar.
C.Transformed consumer behavior.D.Impact of the pandemic.
4. What is the EIU’s attitude towards the future?
A.Optimistic.B.Pessimistic.C.Indifferent.D.Positive.

8 . It is a long time since I took up teaching. During my teaching career, I often ask my students to read the text until they can recite them, and I tell them that recitation is an important part of their homework. However, some of my students are tired of doing so, thinking that it is both hard and useless. They argue that it takes a long time to recite a text from memory and text itself never appears in a test paper.

In my opinion, it does take time to recite a text, but it is worth doing so. When you are able to recite a text, you are sure to be familiar with the words and expressions. 9 . People say money doesn’t buy happiness, but how much money you make can affect the way you experience it?

While it’s true that money can’t buy happiness, having money has certain benefits. For example, money can buy you time to do things that make you happier, and giving away some of your money can make you happier as well. Now scientists from the University of California at Irvine have found that how much money you make may impact (影响) how you experience happiness; higher earners are more likely to experience positive emotions focused on themselves, while lower earners are more likely to experience positive emotions focused on connecting with other people.

Scientists used data from an existing survey of 1,519 U.S. adults between the ages of 24 to 93, to be representative of the entire U.S. population. From the survey, scientist collected the household income of each person and analyzed how each person experienced the seven emotions that are believed to cause happiness: amusement, admiration, compassion, satisfaction, enthusiasm, love, and pride.

What they found was that higher earners were associated with the happiness-related emotions of satisfaction, pride, and amusement, all of which are self-focused in nature. Lower earners were associated with more other-oriented (他人指向) happiness-related emotions: compassion, love, and admiration. There were no differences observed with enthusiasm.

As to reasons for the difference, the researchers suppose that while pride and satisfaction may reflect upper class individuals’ (个人) desire for independence, increased love and compassion may help lower class individuals form more harmonious (和谐的), interdependent bonds to help deal with their more threatening environments. In other words, the researchers are not saying that one way of getting happiness is better than another, but rather that the way one obtains happiness may be a product of existing and coping within one’s particular circumstances.

1. What do higher earners prefer to do?
A.Long to connect with others.B.Spend more money on the poor.
C.Buy things to make them happier.D.Pay more attention to themselves.
2. Why did the scientists study the seven emotions?
A.They can make people happy.
B.They can be bought with money.
C.They are the most common feelings.
D.They are the results of and existing survey.
3. Which emotions did lower-income people have based on the study?
A.Pride and satisfaction.B.Enthusiasm and amusement.
C.Admiration and compassion.D.Compassion and satisfaction.
4. What can be inferred from people with different incomes according to his passage?
A.They all live a hard life.
B.They have different ways to get happiness.
C.They are all satisfied with their lives.
D.Their happiness has nothing to do with money.
