Every day   many   teens   wake   up   afraid   of    1     (go)   to   school.   School bullying(校园欺凌) is a problem    2     affects millions of students, and it makes everyone    3     (worry), not just the kids. Yet because parents, teachers and other   adults don’t always see it, they may not understand how bad bullying can be.

School bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional    4     (safe) at school and can influence their ability to learn. There     5     (be) a number of things   you can do to make schools safe and prevent bullying.

For younger kids, the best way of solving the bullying problem is to tell a trusted adult. For teens, the tell-an-adult way depends on the bullying situation. If you see or hear someone     6       (beat), you should step in     7       (stop) the bullying right away.   If you   cannot stop it by    8     (you), then find someone who can. It   is   important to keep the bully away from the person he or she is bullying. Do not force the two parties to be in the same room together. Bullying is a problem that can cause serious damage unless the problem     9       (solve) in time. Take any bullying that     you hear about very     10       (serious). You might even need to call the police in        some situations.

2 . Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Desertification

Desertification is one of the world’s most alarming processes of environmental degradation(退化). The issue is often unclear, however, by a common misperception: that it’s a “natural” problem of advancing deserts in faraway developing countries. In fact, desertification is about land degradation: the loss of the land’s biological productivity, caused by man-made factors and climate change.

Each year, desertification and drought cause an estimated $42 billion in lost agricultural production. The risks of desertification are sufficient and clear. It contributes to food insecurity, hunger and poverty, and can give rise to social, economic and political tensions that can cause conflicts, further poverty and land degradation. The great urgency of this challenge led the United Nations General Assembly to state 2006 to be the International Year of Deserts and Desertification (IYDD). It is a strong reminder of the urgent need to address the far-reaching implications of this problem. United Nations General Secretary recently summarizes in this way: “I look forward to working with Governments, civil society, the private section, international organizations and others to focus attention on this crucial issue, and to reverse the trend of desertification and set the world on a safer, more sustainable path of development.”

The IYDD also presents a golden opportunity to get the message across strongly and effectively that desertification is a global problem which we ignore at our risk. It is important to recognize that dry-lands are home to some of the most magnificent ecosystems of this world. These unique natural habitats have been home to some of the world’s oldest civilizations. They stand like open-air museums, bearing witness to bygone eras. The Year will therefore also celebrate the delicate beauty and unique inheritance of the world’s deserts.

In most situations, the caller will request that you make a payment or you will face serious consequences when returning to your home country. They may talk or threaten until you make a payment.   While there is no way that these fraudsters can know you are an international student (they call Canadians too), here are some things that you should know in order to better protect yourself:

·Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC),and Canadian Border Services Agency ( CBSA) will not call you, and will not ask for money or personal information by phone. If you call them, you will have to identify yourself.

·Embassies will not threaten you to make a payment or request an investigation fee due to a fake (伪造的) passport.

·Never feel like you need to pay anyone money right away. Ask for an employee number and hang up. You can call back the company (find their number online) and ask about your situation to confirm.

·Be skeptical of anyone asking you to make a payment.

·Think twice before clicking the we blinks provided and make sure they will actually go where they say.

·If you feel that you have been the victim of a fraud, you should report this to the police in the region where you live (e.g. Toronto Police Services). You can also inform Campus Police.

·If you’re not sure about something, WAIT. Come to the ISC (IC-350) and meet with a Transition Advisor. We can help you understand what’s happening.

7 . The words “protect animals” appear everywhere in books and on screens because some animals are in danger of dying out. But sometimes the reality can be a little different from what people read or watch.

Florida, US, has held its first bear hunt since 1994. The local government gave people nearly 4,000 permits to kill black bears. And more than 200 were killed on Oct 24.

Animal protection groups protested this decision. But local officials explained that the black bear population had grown to 3,500 and become a menace to local people. In the past two years, bears have hurt at least four people in Florida.

This brings an old question back into the spotlight – which is more important, protecting animals or protecting people’s interests?

This question is asked in other countries too. In Switzerland, a wolf was sentenced to death by the Swiss government months ago. This is because the wolf killed 38 sheep and local people lost a lot of money. Days ago in China, three old men were arrested for killing a serow(鬣羚), a protected species. But they insisted they didn’t know about this and killed the animal because it ruined their crops.

However, these stories don’t always mean that animal protection stops due to human interests, especially involving economic development. A man named Zhou Weisen set up a wild animal base in Guilin, Guangxi. He saved over 170 tigers and 300 bears. But his base also offered jobs to local people.

“There may never be a standard answer to the question of whether we should give more attention to the environment or human development,” said Robert May, a British biologist at Oxford University. “But we shouldn’t push either one to the side, as the future is hanging in the balance.

1. What does the underlined word “ menace” in the third paragraph mean?
A.dangerB.chanceC.reliefD.treasure
2. What does the author intend to tell us by mentioning Zhou Weisen 's story?
A.Protecting animals needs hard work.
B.Zhou was good at feeding wild animals.
C.Zhou had a good relationship with local people.
D.Protecting animals can bring economic development.
3. Which of the following statements might Robert May agree with?
A.Human development should be considered first.
B.We should pay more attention to animal protection.
C.We should consider both the environment and human interests.
D.It's difficult to find proper ways to solve environmental problems.
4. We can infer from the text that_____________.
A.animals always do no harm to people
B.last bear hunt in Florida took place more than twenty years ago.
C.protecting animals is more important than protecting people's interest.
D.the three old men arrested in China days ago knew that the serow is a protected species.
