1 . Children under the age of 18 will be allowed up to three hours per week to play video games, according to a notice issued by China's National Press and Publication Administration. Online game companies are required to provide services to minors — from 8 to 9 p. m. on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays — as a way to safeguard their physical and mental health. Children are playing more and more online games these days. Is it time to limit their online gaming time? What role do parents have? Readers share their opinions.

Rizlared

Online games are addictive, but if children are taught how to manage in a sensible and responsible manner then it is no longer a threat(威胁).To achieve this, parents need to set examples for not being glued to their phones. Teaching is and always will be the best solution to such problems.

Andrew

Good policy. By limiting time spent on online games, kids can spend time doing more useful things to develop their potential. They can go outside and run, jump and swim instead of sitting on a couch at home and playing with a smart phone.

Adam

It is often seen that parents argue with children over cellphones. Most parents can hardly set and enforce the time limit for its daily usage. Some forcibly take away their cellphones, but it will ruin trust and relationship. Even worse, it will make their kids hate them.

Pink

Excessive(过度的)gaming is purely a waste of time and energy for minors and has a negative effect on both physical and mental health. The gaming industry should not put profit- flaking interests as its priority ( 优先事项) . They should act in a socially responsible way to provide an environment for children to ensure their well-being and development.

Lauren

There would be a loophole(漏洞). Children could use their parents’ or other adults’ IDs to avoid real-name registration, thus making it impossible to put this policy in effect. Parents absolutely need to strengthen guidance and supervision to keep their children from gaming addiction.

1. What should kids do according to Andrew?
A.Play online games.B.Play with a smart phone.
C.Study all the time.D.Go in for outside activities.
2. What does Pink advise the gaming industry to do?
A.Pay attention to its profit.B.Focus on kids’ health.
C.Be responsible for kids’ surroundings.D.Persuade kids lo play more games.
3. What role do parents have according to the passage?
A.They keep hold of their phones.B.They set examples for their kids.
C.They limit their kids’ time.D.They blame kids for addiction.

2 . How To Teach Your Children Proper Manners

Do you think that proper manners are going the way of the dinosaur?    1    It’s not! Follow the steps below and you will have polite little citizens soon!

2    As soon as your children are able to talk, they can be taught proper manners. “Please” and “thank you” are the beginning steps, and the basics, and your child can learn them starting on day one. When your son hands you a toy, say, “thank you.” If you are asking your daughter to stop screeching, say “please”. You will soon find them repeating your example.

Model good manners. If you yawn or cough or sneeze without covering your mouth, how can you expect your child to do it? If you don’t say, “Excuse me” when you are interrupting a conversation, they will never learn to.    3

Teach phone manners.    4    “Hello, this is Suzie Q speaking.” When you are otherwise unwilling, teach them to say, “Mom is unavailable right now. May I take a message?” When you are available, teach them to say, “Yes, she is right here. Would you hold a moment please?” You will be so pleased when your friend or business associate calls and compliments you on the way your children answer the phone.

Teach eye contact. When your child is speaking to an adult, teach him to look the adult in the eye and speak clearly.    5    When an adult asks a question, the child should give a polite answer. Ignoring an adult, or anyone who speaks to a you, is rude and grounds for punishment.

These are just a few small ways to start your child down the path to good manners. Before you know it, they will be polite little ladies and gentlemen, and will have you to thank for a great start!

A.Start at the beginning.
B.Teach them to write thank-you notes.
C.Teach your child to answer the phone by introducing herself.
D.Do you think it’s too late to teach your children proper manners?
E.The best way to teach your child common manners is to model it yourself!
F.Mumbling or checking out his shoes is inappropriate and unacceptable.

3 . Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them.     1    : there's no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children's curiosity.

Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, I said, “Now that we've finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”

After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper (蚱蜢) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?”    2    .

Secondly, give them time to think. Studies have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer,    3    . When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give more logical, complete and creative answers.

Thirdly,    4    . Once you have a child in a science discussion, don't jump in with “That's right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That's interesting” or coming up with more questions or ideas.

Lastly,    5    . Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass (放大镜), and they'll understand why you want them to wash before dinner.

A.show; don't tell
B.watch your language
C.no time for a child to think
D.Never push a child to wait
E.Helping them enjoy science can be easy
F.children are always thinking without your telling them to
G.This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours

4 . Ask a classroom of children to draw a scientist, and you’ll see plenty of colored lab coats and glasses. The image ( 画像) hasn't changed much since the 1960s, but the person wearing the lab coat is changing.

A new analysis finds that more female scientists have appeared in kids? drawings in recent decades — going from nearly nonexistent in the 1960s to about a third in 2016.

The first of many “ draw-a-scientist ’’ studies asked nearly 5,000 children to draw a scientist between 1966 and 1977. Of those 5,000 drawings, only 28 drew female scientists. That was just 0.56 percent. Today, female scientists are being presented more in the media. For example, in a content analysis, 13 percent of people pictured in science feature stories of the 1960s were women or girls, compared with 44 percent in the 2000s. “That might really affect children’s idea on what a scientist should be like, ” says Miller, a Ph. D. candidate in psychology.

To look for changes in children's perception over time, the researchers conducted a meta-analysis ,combining data from 78 studies that included a total of more than 20,000 children from kindergarten to the 12th grade. On average, 28 percent of children drew female scientists in studies conducted from 1965 to 2016.

What hasn’t changed much: kids pick up stereotypes (模式化观念)by gender (性别) as they grow up. At age 6, about 70 percent of the girls in the more recent studies drew female scientists. By age 16, 75 percent drew male scientists. This is an important period in which kids are learning stereotypes. It’s important that teachers and parents present diverse examples of both male and female scientists.

1. What’s the picture of scientists drawn by a 1960s, kid like?
A.A man with long curly hair.B.A woman with lab glasses.
C.A woman in a formal lab suit.D.A man in a colored lab coat.
2. What may contribute to the changes in kids’ drawings?
A.The improvement of women^ social status.
B.The kids are affected by teachers and parents.
C.More female scientists appear in the media.
D.The increasing number of female scientists.
3. What does the underlined word “ perception” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A.Belief.B.Idea.C.Habit.D.Growth.
4. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .
A.it's a stereotype that scientists are generally males
B.girls are more influenced by stereotypes than boys
C.some children are born with certain stereotypes
D.most children tend to prefer female scientists

5 . From skateboarding to Fleetwood Mac, TikTok users got creative in a pandemic (流行病) year with new songs, dances and shows in 60 seconds or less.

The social media video app on Wednesday shared its list of top 100 videos, creators and trends in America during 2020. “These videos brought joy and inspiration to millions of Americans in the rough year,” said Kudzi Chikumbu, director of creator community at TikTok.

The platform has been widely associated with Generation Z (people born after 1996), millennials (people born in the 1980s or 1990s) and influencers who have started careers based on the shared videos.

The Weeknd's Blinding Lights and Jason Derulo's Savage Love inspired TikTok dance challenges that made them among the top songs used on the app.

For some TikTok creators, the pandemic itself became inspiration to create a connection with other users. Comedian Caitlin Reilly used the app during quarantine (隔离) to make fun of those annoying coworkers for one of the top liked videos. And singer Curtis Roach made an song for the endless days at home with his song Bored in the House.

The second most popular video was an Idaho man named Nathan Apodaca who shot to fame after coolly singing Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, while skateboarding on a highway.

But the most liked TikTok video was awarded to Bella Poarch with 45 million followers, who created a simple but interesting video with a few seconds of well-timed head nods and eye rolls.

While the app might be designed for youth, Chikumbu said that the growth of TikTok this year has pushed it more into mainstream culture. “You're seeing everyone from the teenager to the college students with their parents and then their grandparents all making videos,” said Chikumbu. “And now TikTok truly transcends generations, particularly in this year when people had a lot of time to dig in and not only watch, but try.”

Nowadays, students are paying less and less attention to handwriting.

According to a survey, about 85.8 percent of middle school students think that their handwriting is poorly. Yet for various reason, many students don't want to improve their handwriting. 51.5 percent think that they can use a computer, so there is not need to waste the time improving their handwriting. 32.3 percent believe that they are such busy with the study that they don't have time practice. 10.9 percent think that practice handwriting is useless.

Writing style show the man. Beautiful handwriting is very benefit, especially for middle school students. Therefore, in my opinion, more emphasis should be placed in this aspect.

8 . Many teens may feel anxious sometimes. It's the kind of nervousness that makes you bite your fingers before a big test. We spend more time online than we should. We feel good about ourselves or bad based on how many Likes and Followers we get on social media. Young people are developing a wrong view of life.

On the screen, we see what people want to show us. People usually only post photos where they are looking at their best. They meet friends around them and seem that they are having a great time. No one seems sad or lonely. In short, life is wonderful. But sooner or later, our young people compare their real life to it. They find that theirs doesn't seem as fun or exciting and grow worried that they may be missing out.

No wonder teachers are reporting more anxious students. It's reported that a lot more college students feel —too much anxiety. The percentage jumped from 50% in 2016 to 62% in 2021. Anxiety is now the most common mental-health problem in my country. It affects nearly one-third of teens and adults.

Certainly, we can't blame (责备)it on social media alone. We expect too much from our children and a lot of these expectations aren't reasonable. Their plans are packed with sports, clubs and homework. They don't have enough free time. We want our children to succeed, and we don't care how much it costs.

As parents, we must have more balance. On one hand, we push too hard, and on the other hand, we make life too easy for children. We shouldn't and can't promise our children that they will always be happy. We shouldn't try to protect them from the problems of everyday life. Let them solve the problems in person.

1. What does the underlined word “theirs” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Young people's life.B.Young people's friends.
C.Young people's photos.D.Young people's parents.
2. What does the fourth paragraph concentrate on?
A.The cost from parents.B.The duty of social media.
C.The hobbies of young people.D.The expectations from parents.
3. What does the writer suggest parents do in the last paragraph?
A.Try to meet teens' expectations.B.Help teens with their homework.
C.Give teens more free time to play sports.D.Allow teens to solve their own problems in life.
4. Which is the best title for the text?
A.What Causes Teens' NervousnessB.How to Deal with Teens' Anxiety
C.How to Treat Social Media SuitablyD.What a View of Life Means to People

9 . These days, it’s not unusual to see middle-aged men collecting Star Wars action figures, office workers wearing Hello Kitty accessories, or celebrities like David Beckham playing with Lego bricks. It’s becoming more and more common to see adult taking an interest in toys, comic books and the activities that are traditionally associated with children. This phenomenon has given rise to a new word: kidult.

What lies behind the phenomenon? One is about adults’ nostalgia (怀旧之情)for the carefree days of childhood, and this is especially true with today’s fast-paced, stressful lifestyles. Another is about a societal change in recent decades where people are starting families later. As a result, they have more time and money to spend on themselves. Some adults could only window-shop for their dream toys when they were kids, but now they can afford that radio controlled car or high-priced doll they have always wanted.

Businesses have been quick to exploit the kidult trend, and the number of toy stores that target adults has risen. Companies are repackaging products from past decades and also bringing out new ones for adults. Lego, for example, has brought out an architectural series featuring landmarks from around the world.

Society traditionally disapproves of adults who refuse to put aside childhood interests, viewing the refusal as a sign of social immaturity and irresponsibility. Those who agree with this view sometimes claim that kidults are suffering from the pop-psychology concept known as Peter Pan Syndrome, an anomaly (异常)that people remain emotionally at the level of teenagers. On a grander scale, these kidult opponents argue that such delayed adulthood causes couples to marry later and have fewer children. This in turn can lead to shrinking national economies, for there needs to be a generational replenishment(补充)of the workforce.

From the standpoint of kidults, though, this phenomenon is seen as nothing but harmless fun. Kidults insist that having youthful interests keeps them young, happy and creative, and their refusal to conform to society’s acceptable tastes shows independent thinking. Besides, they argue that being part of the social trend of delayed adulthood is not purely a personal choice. The real causes include expensive housing, increased educational requirements for employment and poor ork opportunities.

Whether the kidult phenomenon will continue to grow or prove to be a passing trend is anyone’s guess. As the debate about it continues, remember that there is nothing wrong with being young at heart.

1. What does the kidult phenomenon refer to?
A.Adults act like children.
B.Adults have child-like tastes.
C.Adults go in for collecting toys.
D.Adults like playing with children.
2. Which of the following might cause the emergence of kidults?
A.Different living conditions.
B.More choices about toys.
C.High pressure of modern life.
D.Good memories of childhood.
3. How does the text deal with the debate about kidults?
A.By strongly opposing kidult opponents.
B.By convincing readers to accept kidults.
C.By refusing to take a stand on the issue.
D.By presenting both sides of the argument.
4. What can we infer about the author’s attitude towards the phenomenon from the last paragraph?
A.Doubtful.B.Positive.
C.Disapproving.D.Uncaring.

10 . A tiger park in Phuket, Thailand is preparing to welcome back foreign visitors this week. The reopening is part of a plan to bring back foreign visitors with COVID-19 vaccination to the island. The visitors do not have to follow lockdown rules. After 14 days, as long as they have no coronavirus infection, they can travel elsewhere in Thailand.

Chadarat Taodaeng is the general manager of Tiger Kingdom in Phuket. He said the park had put safety measures in place before Thursday’s reopening to help foreign visitors feel comfortable.

“We have vaccinated more than 90 percent of our workers and also trained them about the ‘new normal’ tourism,” the manager said. The park has more than 50 tigers and a cheetah. And visitors can get close to them. Since the pandemic lockdowns, visitor numbers have dropped from nearly 1,000 a day to fewer than 20.

Thailand lost about $50 billion in tourism when foreign arrivals fell to 6. 7 million last year. In 2019, the country had nearly 40 million visitors. And Phuket suffered from a large number of job losses and business closings.

“I’m happy that finally there will be people visiting the tigers, and Phuket city will be bustling again,” said the park’s assistant manager, Phonphawit Ton-od. She added that the reopening would “help with both tigers’ and the workers’ mental health.”

Even though there has been an increase in the popularity of parks like the Tiger Kingdom, experts are against the opening. Clearly, there are worries over safety after some attacks by the animals. Bringing back visitors is important to Thailand’s economy. But government officials also have to deal with a recent increase in coronavirus infections.

1. What kind of foreign visitors does the tiger park want?
A.Wealthy ones.B.Brave ones.C.Polite ones.D.Safe ones.
2. What do we know from the manager’s words in paragraph 3?
A.The money the country lost.B.The visitors the park receives.
C.Measures the park has taken.D.The numbers of animals in the park.
3. What does the underlined word “bustling” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Busy.B.Silent.C.Clean.D.Dangerous.
4. Why do experts have a different opinion about the reopening?
A.Foreigners may spread diseases.B.They are worried about hidden risks.
C.The wild animals in the park may suffer.D.Over-tourism may damage the environment.
