With the rapid development of the Internet, more and more teenagers make friends online nowadays. Some people say it's good to do that, while others think it's     1     (harm) especially to school pupils.

Some consider that making friends online is a modern way to share friendship     2     others. They can express their thoughts     3     (free) to improve social skills and fluency in English. On the contrary, some strongly believe it is     4     waste of time to make friends through online communication and what's worse, those so-called “friends” are likely to cheat you after     5     (gain) your trust.

In my opinion,     6     the Internet is good or not depends on how we use it. If it     7     (use) properly, we can communicate with people that come from every corner of the world, and share life experiences. Of course, however, since the Internet was born, many bad men     8     (make) use of it to do something bad. So we must learn     9     (determine) true or false and avoid being hurt.

In conclusion, every coin has two     10     (side). So does the Internet. If used in a proper way, the Internet has more advantages in seeking friendship.

Colleges are attaching too much importance to tests. Students who receive higher scores on the SAT and the ACT are considered to be more intelligent and as a result they are usually admitted to better schools.

However, these tests don’t necessarily ensure one’s future success in life. To become better test-takers than others, some students would like to make more preparations. Several SAT and ACT classes are offered by various companies and individual tutors, giving rich students a better chance to improve their scores. Some students even take medicine before tests. Although it is not proved that taking these drugs will increase a student’s score, the nature of the drug is to increase alertness, concentration, and mental processing speed.

In addition, these tests can’t show the skills and characters that are a key part to success. According to Bob Schaeffer of the National Center for Fair and Open Testing, creativity, perseverance and self-discipline(自律) are a few basic qualities that are useful in the world that aren’t measured by these tests. A high test score tells you nothing about how a student will handle the future life or how well they will adapt to their surroundings.

What colleges can do is to weigh the students’ academic track, such as what classes they took and how difficult they were, or what extra curricular activities the students were involved in. These things don’t necessarily predict what the students will do in college, but if the admissions would pay more attention to four years of hard work, they might get a more successful and well-rounded group of graduates.

3 . Artists always treat businessmen people as money-obsessed bores. Or worse, many business people, for their part, assume that artists are a bunch of pretentious wasters. Bosses may stick a few modernist paintings on their boardroom walls. But they seldom take the arts seriously as a source of inspiration.

The prejudice starts at business school, where “hard” things such as numbers and case studies rule. It is reinforced by everyday experience. Bosses constantly remind their underlings that if you can’t count it, it doesn’t count. Few read deeply about art. Sun Tzu's The Art of War does not count while some tasteless business books are pleasing to them: consider Wess Roberts' Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun.

But lately there are welcome signs of a thaw (缓和) on the business side of the great cultural divide. Business presses are publishing a series of books such as The Fine Art of Success by Jamie Anderson. Business schools such as the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto are trying to learn from the arts.

Mr. Anderson points out that many artists have also been superb entrepreneurs. Damien Hirst was even more enterprising. He upturned the art world by selling his work directly through Sotheby’s, an auction (拍卖) house. Whatever they think of his work, businessmen people cannot help admiring a man who parted art-lovers from £ 75.5 million on the day that Lehman Brothers collapsed.

Studying the arts can help businessmen people communicate more effectively. Most bosses spend a huge amount of time “messaging” and “reaching out”, yet few are much good at it.

Studying the arts can also help companies learn how to manage bright people. Rob Goffee of the London Business School points out that today’s most productive companies are dominated by what they call “clevers”, who are the devil to manage. They hate being told what to do by managers, whom they regard as dullards. They refuse to submit to performance reviews. In short, they are prima donnas. The arts world has centuries of experience in managing such difficult people. Directors persuade actresses to cooperate with actors they hate. Their tips might be worth hearing.

1. What kind of person is Damien Hirst actually?
A.An artist whose works changed the art world.
B.A businessman who just cares about money.
C.An artist who is good at doing business.
D.A businessman who had prejudice toward the arts.
2. The underlined words “prima donnas” probably refer to those who are _______.
A.quite stupidB.rather proudC.really brightD.very efficient
3. What does the author mainly discuss in the text?
A.Good management takes skill and patience.
B.Artists should show respect for businessmen.
C.Painting is a special form of communication.
D.Businessmen have much to learn from artists.

4 . How much should we believe what we see online?

The film Net Lost follows David Kim, the father of Margot, a teenage girl who disappears. To help with the investigation (调查) of the police, the father looks into Margot’s personal life. The more he discovers, the more he realizes he knew nothing about his daughter. His daughter strangely gives money to other persons online and joins in online chat rooms.

In the film, we see how technology is important but also detrimental. While it helps David to uncover information, it asks a question: how much should we really believe? Information can be misleading.

The film proves how real life can be different from what we see online through Margot’s Facebook. She has a few hundred friends on Facebook but none in real life. With social media, everyone has a voice and hidden aim, and even her classmates only pretend to care about her. Besides, Margot’s messages are misunderstood. Social media quickly makes the public blaming the father: the father 's carelessness caused Margot’s disappearance.

The film is recorded only through a computer screen rather than having the standard camera shots.

This new method is pleasantly new. The filming is very cleverly done and we begin to forget that it’s all through a computer screen.

The film manages to draw the attention and hearts of the film-goers. It has a suspense-filled (充满悬念的) story and fresh viewpoint that mirrors technology in our own lives. So, if you’re searching for a film to get lost in, this is the film for you.

1. Why does Margot’s father research her personal life?
A.To join in Margot’s online chat rooms.
B.To find out whom Margot gives money to.
C.To assist in looking into her disappearance.
D.To make others believe what he sees online.
2. What does the underlined word “detrimental” mean in the third paragraph?
A.Satisfying.B.Believable.

3. What is the film trying to tell people?
A.Margot’s father is responsible for his daughter’s disappearance.
B.Online information may be different from reality.
C.Social media caused the misunderstanding.
D.A film shouldn’t be recorded through a computer.
4. What’s the author’s attitude towards the film?
A.Bored.B.Angry.
C.Doubtful.D.Positive.

5 . LONDON——Global auction(拍卖)sales of Chinese art and antiques fell in 2019 to $ 5.7 billion, a 10 percent drop year-on-year, and the lowest level for the collecting category since 2010. The Global Chinese Art Auction market report, compiled by Artnet and the Chinese Association of Auctioneers, found this was clue to trade tensions between the United States and China, as well as a slowdown of GDP in China.

The report, now in its eighth edition, noted that the value of total auction sales within the Chinese mainland declined by 10 percent in 2019 to $ 3.7 billion, the lowest total since 2010. Outside China, there was also a 9 percent drop in sales of Chinese art and antiques.

“The combination of such slowdowns resulted in a weakening of collectors' confidence and a more cautious attitude among buyers making decisions on investing in art in 2019," said the report.

However, despite the downturn in total sales value for Chinese art and antiques in 2019, the European market showed some positive trends emerging. Significant peaks in lots offered and lots sold in Europe, combined with a strong sell through rate(卖出率)of 61 percent in 2019.

Europe accounted for 29 percent of all Chinese art and antique lots sold overseas in 2019 , according to the report, closing in on(接近)the North American market's share.

The annual report also found strong performances with 20th century and contemporary Chinese art in both the Chinese mainland and overseas, boosted by a younger generation of Chinese collectors.

The average price for the category increased in the Chinese mainland, up by 23 percent year- on-year, and overseas sales saw a nine-year high in 2019. But fine Chinese paintings and calligraphy, the largest collecting category on the Chinese mainland, did not perform as well.

According to the report this category “continued to spiral(螺旋式的)downwards, reaching its lowest point in sales since 2013”. The number of lots dropped by 10 percent year-on-year, almost half of that of 2013 and it also struggled elsewhere, with the overseas total falling to a seven-year low.

1. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The result of a weakening of collectors' confidence in buying art.
B.The advantage of buyers' making decisions on investing in art.
C.The advantage of the decline of the value of total auction sales.
D.The result of the decline of the value of total auction sales.
2. Why does the report say “fine Chinese paintings and calligraphy did not perform as well” on the Chinese mainland?
A.Their standards were not so high.
B.Their prices were not so satisfying.
C.They are the largest collecting category.
D.The average price for the category rose sharply.
3. What does the underlined phrase “accounted for” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Took up.B.Took off.
C.Took away.D.Took on.
4. Which can be the best title for the news report?
A.A Slowdown of GDP in China in 2019
B.A Report on the Global Chinese Art Auction Market

7 . Interactions between people and elephants have a long history. Elephants have been trained and used by human beings for thousands of years, for everything from transportation to construction to logging to war.

In more recent times, Asian elephants have been used in entertainment and as a living ''machine'' to help move logs through the jungle as part of the logging industry. The latter changed in Thailand in 1989, when the Thai government banned the use of elephants in the logging industry. Owners of elephants had very little choice but to turn to tourism to earn enough to care for themselves and their elephants by offering elephant riding to tourists.

Mahouts (象夫) are the elephant handlers who you will see riding or managing the elephants at any camp you visit. The traditional mahout life isn't easy. They are bonded to their elephant and they rarely have time off or time for family.

These years, younger mahouts in Thailand have been more likely to leave the mahout life to find jobs in the city, resulting in elephants having to get used to multiple mahouts. This can lead to additional stress on the elephant, or result in abuse by a mahout trying to manage an elephant that hasn’t built any level of trust with him.

Opponents of elephant riding may suggest that elephant rides be illegal. My worry is that an immediate ban could lead to another massive change in how elephants are treated, similar to ending elephant logging in 1989. How will mahouts that are currently making a living and supporting their elephants through rides be able to continue to do so? The average lifespan of an elephant is 60 years. Any solution needs to take into account the long-term effects on the elephants currently employed giving rides.

1. What happened in 1989 in Thailand?
A.Elephants lost their jobs.B.Elephants joined in tourism.
C.Entertainment was forbidden.D.The government banned logging.
2. What will cause the ill treatment of some elephants?
A.The great stress to make money.
B.The former masters’ leaving them.
C.The heavy load on the elephants.
D.The owners' mistrust of the elephants.
3. What's the best title for the passage?
A.Will You Go to Thailand?
B.Why are Elephants Trained?
C.How do Mahouts Train Elephants?
D.Should You Ride Elephants in Thailand?
4. Why does the author write this passage?
A.To present a problem.B.To criticize mahouts.
C.To introduce Thailand.D.To record his experience.

8 . Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history. Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the world forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.

Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more.

Animals are more than just beautiful and interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems.

For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks(老鹰), the farmers stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied quickly.

Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger.

Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid(禁止)the killing of any animals or plants on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

A.Save the AnimalsB.Useful Animals
C.Laws for AnimalsD.Animals in Danger
2. Animals are important to us mainly because ________.
A.they give us a source of foodB.they are beautiful and lovely
C.they give us a lot of pleasureD.they keep the balance of nature

Innovations that will change the classroom

American schools are going high - tech. Many symbols we still associate with classrooms and learning, like chalkboards, pens, notebooks - even classrooms     1     --- are quickly becoming outdated.

As this week marks The Huffington Post’s 10th anniversary, we’ll take a look at some products that     2     (introduce) to classroom in the past decade and have the potential to change the educational landscape in the years     3     (come).

1. Remote Learning

Some schools are cutting down on snow days, thanks to technology. Rather than giving kids the day off     4     weather conditions are too dangerous for commuting, these schools are asking students to follow classroom lessons online.

Although kids     5     (hope) for a snow day may not particularly appreciate these advancements in digital learning, online lessons allow these kids to complete their coursework and still interact with peers. Some students with medical conditions     6     “go” to school via video conferencing or even with the help of robots enabled with video chat that they can control remotely.

2. eBooks

Discovery Education has been replacing traditional textbooks with original “techbooks” for six years. These “techbooks” can also be switched to Spanish or French, Kinney said,     7     allows some parents who don’t speak English to help their kids with their homework.

3. Educational Games

In-class gaming options have evolved to include more educational options. GlassLab creates educational games that are now being used in more than 6,000 classrooms across the country. Teachers get real-time updates on students’ progress as well as suggestions on     8     subjects they need to spend more time perfecting.

The Internet and other digital tools have some drawbacks. They’re often distracting,     9     most developments have exciting implications for the future. Over the last 10 years, technological innovations have made education more interactive, immediate and     10     (personalize), -- and have shown us the potential for more accessible and effective classrooms.

10 . If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

Dreaming about whether you would want to read minds, see through walls, or have superhuman strength may sound silly, but it actually gets to the heart of what really matters in your life.

Every day in our work, we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world.

They have a different kind of superpower that all of us possess: the power to make a difference in the lives of others.

We’re not saying that everyone needs to contribute their lives to the poor. Your lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, don’t be a bystander. Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when you’re older. But why not start now?

Our own experience working together on health, development, and energy the last twenty years has been one of the most rewarding parts of our lives. It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead.
