文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了太阳能电池板的使用改变着护林员的生活,然而很多地区仍然面临能源不足问题。

1 . In battling the timber poachers who enter the thick Sierra Madre forests near his home, Larry Garaes has found a new support: solar panels.

With solar chargers, the radios he and other forest rangers (护林人) rely on no longer run out of power on multi-day operations in the mountains.

“Communication between rangers is a lot better. Now, we can catch the poachers while they are in the act because we can coordinate (使协调) our moves quietly without turning to shout at the next ranger — unlike before,” Garaes said.

Access to clean energy is bringing a range of unexpected benefits around the world. On the longest mountain range in the Philippines, those benefits include better forest protection — and power for tribal people who once lacked it.

More than 2 million households — or about 10 percent of all households — in the Philippines lack electricity, according to a 2017 report by the country’s Department of Energy.About three quarters are in remote rural locations, in a country spread over thousands of islands, according to the Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG), which is trying to get them connected.Because bringing the national grid (网格) power to many of those people is not cost effective, the state National Power Corporation has charged SPUG with setting up and running small power plants in these areas. So far 327 such plants have been established. Government plans to call for 100 percent electrification of the country by 2022.

“Government has to do its work to connect all those areas that are not yet connected to the grid,” said Edmundo Veloso Jr. “But all but one of the new generation plants use diesel fuel, he said — even though transport of fuel can be a big problem in remote areas. Diesel is the fastest and the only technology available at the moment for off-grid areas. Diesel is still the cheapest in terms of capital outlay (开支).”

1. What do Garaes’ words suggest?
A.Fewer poachers come there.
B.They used to move loudly.
C.Their conditions improved.
D.They were tired of shouting.
2. What do we know about the Philippines?
A.People are unwilling to use clean energy.
B.Using clean energy benefits people there.
C.Forest protection turns out to be serious.
D.People in the area require more attention.
3. What does the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A.The serious shortage of electricity.
B.The poor conditions in rural areas.
C.The improvement of power supply.
D.The popularity of power plants.
4. What problem is serious in remote areas?
A.Lacking funds.B.Shipping fuel.
C.Technology.D.Shortage of attention.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。通过研究发现,参与者很容易挑出用白色勾勒出的方形颜色,但是当加入干扰项之后,他们就会出错。说明了多任务不仅放慢速你的度,还可能会影响你此刻的感知。

2 . We live in a world of countless reminders, and constant push notifications (通知). Every service seems to be competing for our attention all the time. As it turns out, all this distraction may come at a massive cost, but you don’t even realize it.

The findings from new research at Ohio State University were published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance. Dozens of participants were given a simple-sounding task. Look at a screen of four colored squares. One will be outlined in white-pay attention to that one. After these squares flash on the screen for a mere tenth of a second, pick the color that you remember from a color wheel.

Despite the rapid speed of such work, the human brain excels (擅长) at this task. “People are quite good at this, surprisingly good!” says Julie Golumb, associate professor of psychology at Ohio State University.

They got quite good at it, to a point. Researchers threw a wrench by introducing an intentional distractor. Of the four squares, one would be outlined in white, but then another — the distractor — would be surrounded in white dots. Despite being instructed to ignore the distractor, subjects just couldn’t help it. Most of the time, they still recalled the color. But about20% to 30% of the time, they actually reported the distractor color as the correct one, unaware of the error.

As Golumb emphasizes, findings like these are a big deal. We’ve long known balancing too many tasks can slow down our thinking. But the fact that it can literally recolor our memories should give us pause, because there’s not a fundamental difference between colored squares and real versus fake news headlines on social media.

“If you’re trying to pay attention to multiple things, you’re not going to be as good at if it were one at a time,” she says. “We’ve known for a long-time multitasking might slow you down, but our research shows, it’s not just you might be slowed down; it might affect what you’re perceiving in the moment.”

1. What task were the participants given?
A.Distinguish different colors of squares.
B.Put the squares of a color into groups.
C.Pick out the square color outlined in white.
D.Figure out what you remember from a color wheel.
2. What does the underlined phrase “threw a wrench” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Assessed the experiment.
B.Added the difficulty.
C.Overturned the result.
D.Discovered the truth.
3. What method does Golumb use to emphasize her opinion in paragraph 5?
A.Making a comparison.
B.Giving examples.
C.Following time order.
D.Making classifications.
4. What’s Julie Golumb’s attitude to multi-tasking?
A.Suspicious.B.Unconcerned.C.OptimistiD.Negative.

Some students think high of live-streamed lessons, which make learning more flexible, when others point to the many disadvantages such as low efficiency. As far as I am concerning, live-streamed lessons are only good for extremely self-disciplined students, but do no good to those lacked in self-control. Firstly, many students cannot stop themselves from playing their phones,   which influenced their learning efficiency. Secondly, students need an environment which they are motivated to be devoted to learning, but live-streamed lessons do not provide us with such an environment. To sum up, live-streamed lessons what have a lot of disadvantages and is not fit for all.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。介绍了有些人比别人高的奥秘——关键在大脑。

10 . Have you ever wondered why you might be a little taller than your friends or family? Well, scientists believe the mystery of why humans are growing taller and reaching puberty(青春期)earlier is due to something in the brain.

We already know that better nutrition leads to greater height as humans have been growing taller on the whole in recent centuries. Better nutrition also causes people to reach maturity (成 熟)faster. Genes also play a role in how tall we become and we all grow and look according to the codes in our DNA. A lack of nutrition makes it harder for us to reach the full potential of our own genes.

According to the University of Maryland, our body requires a certain amount of energy to make us grow. But a new study suggests that a brain receptor (感受器)could be responsible for our growth. The study showed that the brain receptor MC3R is responsible for signals from food reaching a part of the brain called the hypothalamus(下丘脑).The hypothalamus is responsible for keeping things in check like body temperature and adjusting appetite and weight.

MC3R’s not working properly tends to mean that people are shorter and start puberty much later. Professor Sir Stephen O’ Rahilly, one of the authors of the study, said, “lt tells the body we’re great here and that we’ve got lots of food, so grow quickly and have puberty soon.”

There is a lot about the brain we still don’t know. But this research could lead to further development of drugs for children with delayed growth and puberty starting much later. More understanding of the receptor won’t mean that we can make ourselves taller. That all still depends on genes, but it could help people with chronic (慢性的)illnesses who need to build up muscle.

1. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A.Genes lead to faster maturity.
B.Nutrition determines a person’s height.
C.Better nutrition is important to growing taller.
D.Bad nutrition will change a person’s genes.
2. How does MC3R work to get you taller according to the new study?
A.By taking in a large amount of nutrition itself.
B.By having us check body temperatures regularly.
C.By sending signals to inspire us to have more nutrition.
D.By helping us control our appetite to lose weight.
3. The new finding will most probably help to
A.find ways to put off kid’s puberty
B.treat patients with chronic illness
C.find scientific exercise to get our muscle stronger
D.develop medicine for kids with delayed growth
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Why Are Some People Shorter? Genes Are to Blame
B.Why Are Some People Shorter? Nutrition Is to Blame
C.Why Are Some People Taller? The Key Is in Our Appetite
D.Why Are Some People Taller? The Key Is in Our Brains
