On a normal day at the Brooklyn Center Liquor store, one of the things any customer would be greeted with is a warm smile from Ta Leia Thomas. She is also known as “Ace” by her co-workers.

Her kindness is something that people know about her, and this side of her was fortunately caught on film after she did an act of real concern that made people online feel inspired to share her story.

After going out for lunch, store manager Tom Agnes found Ta Leia serving customers wearing only her socks. It was an unusual sight for him, and knowing the cold weather outside, the manager was a bit concerned about what happened to her.

He decided to carefully examine the security camera footage(监控录像) to find out why Ta Leia was in her socks and had no shoes to protect her feet. That was when he found out the kind act his staff(员工) did for a homeless person.

In the security camera footage, a homeless man can be seen dragging boxes as he passed by the store. The only thing is that he wasn’t actually bringing the said boxes, but he wore them on his feet to serve as his shoes.

Ta Leia saw the man walk by and within seconds, the woman took off her own shoes and approached the homeless man. She gave her shoes to him and returned to work with only her socks on.

“I see his feet and I just took my shoes off,” Ta Leia said.

Ta Leia did not hesitate to give away her prized possession(私人物品) to help others in need. Her kindness is clearly inspiring and something that people online have found to be very uplifting(令人振奋的). Knowing that someone as kind as her is out there helping those in need is quite comforting.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The house next door had been empty for more than a year. Then one day, workmen arrived and started to clean and paint the place. My siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I were curious about who would be moving in. We did not have long to wait. A week after the house was prepared, a truck arrived. We watched with interest as the movers carried the furniture into the house. The furniture looked expensive. Our new neighbors must be wealthy people.

However, it never occurred to us four children that rich people may not be interested in befriending us. Our house badly needed a new coat of paint. We were clean and tidy most of the time, but our clothes were clearly old and worn. Father drove an old car that we could hear coming down the road long before it was in sight. We were simple, ordinary people.

When the new occupants arrived in a big and shiny car, we pushed one another to get a good look at them from our bedroom window. Mother had forbidden us from hanging around our gate. She said our new neighbors needed privacy, whatever that was. A beautifully dressed lady got out of the car. To our joy, we saw a boy and a girl about our age following her into the house. They did not look excited to move into their new home though. That did not stop us from wanting to get to know them.

The next evening, we were playing hide-and-seek in the garden when we spotted the boy and the girl watching us. My siblings and I went to the fence that separated our gardens. My eldest brother Kian called to the pair. They looked at us unsmilingly. Their mother appeared next, took one look at us and brought the two into the house. We were disappointed to have such snooty (傲慢的) neighbors. We decided to leave them alone after that.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者在Julia Child的影响下爱上了美食并理解了人生的终极目标。

5 . Just as certain actors led me to acting, certain cooking-show hosts are partly to blame for my heightened interest in the subject of food. The first is of course Julia Child, the queen of culinary (烹饪的) TV.

Child not only changed what Americans cooked and ate, but also greatly impacted their diet of weekly television viewing. Her show The French Chef, which originally aired in 1963, was one of the first cooking shows on American television and lasted for 10 years. Watching her expertly debone a chicken or bake a cake, often making mistakes along the way, made viewers feel that they too could create such dishes. Her achievements were amazing, from her first work, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, to countless others, as well as season upon season of shows.

Child has always interested me. My mother tuned in to The French Chef faithfully, and I remember loving it. I know that watching The French Chef with my mom was a way to spend some time with her, because with three kids and a full-time job, she was incredibly busy. In fact, we would often watch the show when she was doing housework like ironing and cleaning. My mother admired Child and in turn passed the feeling to me, along with an interest in how someone goes about cooking a meal.

Years later, I caught an old episode of the show at my parents’ home and watched it with even more attentiveness than I had when I was young. On this particular occasion, I was taken aback by my reaction when Child said her signature farewell (告别), “This is Julia Child, bon appetite!” My eyes suddenly welled up with tears. I realized that I was moved by Child not only because she brought back happy boyhood memories but also because Child herself was so genuinely happy to be doing what she was doing.

I saw at that moment the embodiment (典型) of what I, and so many of us, want to become: to spend your life doing what you love and doing it well.

1. What do we know about Child?
A.She worked as a director for a TV show.
B.She wrote books about American food.
C.She participated in many cooking contests.
D.She pioneered cooking shows in America.
2. Why did the young author watch The French Che?
A.To relax after housework.B.To enjoy his mother’s company.
C.To learn to cook meals for himself.D.To free his mother from looking after kids.
3. What happened to the author when he watched Child’s show years later?
A.He was astonished by her farewell words.B.He felt regret for his boyhood.
C.He understood life’s goal.D.He showed less interest.
4. What does the author mainly talk about in the text?
A.Child’s contribution.B.Child’s effect on him.
C.Child’s wonderful life.D.Child’s amazing show.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was walking on the shore when I suddenly heard someone crying. It just drew my attention and I began to look around. Suddenly I saw a little child sitting on a rock who was crying. It was around twelve at night. “Why is he here? Why is he crying?” I wondered. And above all I couldn’ t see anyone around him, for he was too small to be alone. I approached him, initially he was frightened but I calmed him down and gave him a chocolate to eat. From the way he ate the chocolate I could make this out that he was very hungry.

I felt pity on him, who was a little boy around seven years old. His clothes were all torn. Now he was quite comfortable with me and I asked why he was crying. He told me to look at those waves in the sea and asked how I felt about them. I said they were beautiful. But he made an angry face and said he hated them, because these waves took his parents away. He was just five and since then he started wandering in this unknown city. No one loved him. These words “No one loved him” just took me into a flashback.

I suddenly recollected the dark memories of my life. I recalled that I was an orphan (孤儿) and how a couple adopted me when I was four years old. They did a lot for me, because of them today I am the engineer of the biggest shipping company. They were in a sense my true parents but I was so unfortunate that I lost them in an accident nearly three years ago. I remembered how I always wanted to thank them for what all they did for me but I couldn’t. I felt like this lttle boy was at the same situation like mine when I was a four-year old little kid.

Now it was my turn I told the little boy about my little old sad story and what I am today.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要讲述一位17岁的飞行员创造了独自环球飞行的记录,这足以说明其勇气可嘉,技能精湛,值得其他追寻自己梦想的孩子学习。

7 . Mack Rutherford, a 17-year -old pilot has become the youngest person to fly alone around the world. He landed his small plane in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia on Wednesday. That is also where he started his trip five months ago.

His trip, which started in Sofia on a plane owned by the Internet company ICDSoft on March 23, took Rutherford through 52 countries across five continents. The plane, called Shark, can travel at the speed of 300 kilometers per hour. Normally a two-seater, the plane was changed for his long trip by replacing the second seat with an extra fuel container (容器).

Rutherford first planned to make the trip in three months. But it lasted longer because of several barriers, including rainstorms, sandstorms and extreme heat. Most of the delays were caused by waits to get permits and other documents required for keeping with the flight plan.

The flight took him through Africa and the Gulf area to India. China, South Korea, and Japan. He crossed the northern Pacific and landed after 10 straight hours in the air on a volcanic island near the Bering Strait. From there, he headed to Alaska and down the West Coast of the United States to Mexico.

On Wednesday, a huge crowd of people welcomed Rutherford. His father, Sam Rutherford, told reporters that such an event helps show other children they should follow their dreams.

His sister, Zara, said, “While he was flying, I often tried to keep in touch and help him. Our parents called him every day, and I joined in those conversations. I gave him advice on the route, on the flight, so that I could be useful to him.”

1. What do we know about Shark?
A.It belongs to ICDSoft.B.It can seat three persons.
C.It has two normal containers.D.Rutherford’s father rented it.
2. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.His first plan.B.The past hardship.
C.The tiring long trip.D.The causes of delays.
3. What can be inferred from Sam Rutherford s words?
A.Children are fond of flight.B.People’s gathering touched him.
C.He has had a great effect on children.D.He is proud of his son’s great deeds.
4. Who kept in close touch with Rutherford during his flight?
A.Zara.B.His friends.

From her lifeguard station at the end of the pool, Jessica noticed clouds forming in the sky. By the time she took a break at 2:30, the wind was picking up and the sky was darkening. The pool manager announced over the loudspeaker that the pool was closing immediately, due to a weather warning. He asked everyone to head to the safety of home before the storm hit.

All of the swimmers had left by 3: 30 except for Jessica's neighbor, eight-year-old Zack Hill. Zack's mother had dropped him off at the pool while she went to work. She had planned to pick him up later, but the storm was coming fast. Jessica decided that she would drop Zack off on her way home. She taped a note for Mrs. Hill on the door of the pool office and headed out.

The minute Jessica and Zack left the parking lot, it was clear that this was no ordinary storm. The wind was very strong, the storm clouds were dark, and the sky had turned a terrible green. The rain hit just as Jessica turned onto her street, Jessica said, “Jack, I'm going to take you to my house. We need to get inside right away, and your house is farther away than mine.”

She pressed the garage-door opener, but nothing happened. The electricity was out. The front door was only a few feet away, but the wind was so strong that Jessica and Zack had to fight their way out of the car and into the house. Jessica held Zack's hand firmly. The door was heavy with the pressure of the wind. Finally, it opened, but it was blown out of Jessica's hand and it hit the side of the house. The window broke into pieces,Jessica picked up Zack and threw the two of them inside; her only thought was to get to a safe place.

10 . An elephant was standing and picking leaves from a tree. A small fly came, flying and buzzing near his ear. The elephant waved it away with his long ears. Then the fly came again and the elephant waved it away once more.

This happened several times. Then the elephant asked the fly, “Why are you so restless and noisy? Why can’t you just stay in one place? ”

The fly answered, “I am interested in whatever I see, hear or smell. My five senses, and everything that happens around me, pull me here and there and I cannot resist (抵抗) them. What is your secret? How can you stay so calm and still? ”

The elephant stopped eating and said, “My five senses do not rule me. I am in control of myself — my senses do not tell me what to do. This helps me stay focused on whatever I do, and so, keep my mind calm and still. Now that I am eating, I am completely enjoying eating. In this way, I can just focus on enjoying my food. ”

After hearing these words, the fly’s eyes opened wide and a smile appeared on his face. He looked at the elephant and said, “I understand! I will always be restless if I let my senses control me. On the other hand, if I try to use some self-control, my mind will become calm and I’ll be able to stay still. ”
