5 . Long time ago in a small, faraway village, there was a place known as the House of 1,000 Mirrors. Mirrors were on the top of a couple of stairs, reflecting everything.
A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, after getting to the top, he found himself staring at 1,000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1,000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself, “This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit it often.” And he told every friend about this fantastic house when he came back to the village.
Hearing the news, another little dog in this same village, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house, too. With serious look on his face, he slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he walked into the door of the house. After getting to the top, he was out of breath. That is when he saw the 1,000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him. He growled (恶狠狠地咆哮) at them at once and was frightened to see 1,000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, “That is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again.”
All the faces in the world are mirrors, what kind of reflections do you see in the faces of the people you meet? In fact, if you take a look around, you will find changing reflections in their faces. From these reflections, you can understand yourself better.

6 . After nearly a decade of enduring the busy and noisy life in Las Vegas, Nevada, my family and I reached a decision to have a slower pace and adopt a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. We collectively agreed that moving to the countryside would be the perfect solution.
After some searching, we found a home in Yucca, Arizona, a small town with a population of less than 1,000 people. However, when I called to ask about the condition of the house, I was surprised to know that there was no electricity available in the area. Initially, I almost denied the idea of living here, but then I realized that it was an excellent opportunity to go green. After careful consideration, we decided to make an offer and moved in on Thanksgiving Day.
In the beginning, we faced challenges as we remodeled (改造) the house and lived in our motor home. However, these frustrations just made us work harder. We gradually fixed the things and after 38 days, we were able to move into the house.
Living off the grid (电线) has been a significant adjustment for us over the past four months, but it has also brought numerous benefits. One of the most educational lessons we have learned is teaching my kids the importance of conservation. They used to take water, power, and gas for granted, but now they understand the need to be mindful of their usage. We have made changes such as taking shorter showers, doing full loads of laundry, and turning off the water while brushing our teeth. Additionally, we have embraced other sustainable practices like recycling, growing our own organic vegetables, and re-purposing items instead of throwing them away.
Overall, our decision to go off the grid has been incredibly positive for our family. We hope that even after our children move out, they will continue to keep the habits they have developed while living off the grid.

During breakfast, Alan suggested going to the Lego Land to have fun and his mom agreed.
“We’ll stop by the supermarket and buy some snacks and fruits. Now hurry and eat and then we’ll go. It’s going to be a lovely day. Grandma is coming with us. She’ll be here any minute.”
Alan ate his breakfast and then ran into his room to get his shoes. The problem was that he could only find one of them. He looked under his bed, but all he could see were dirty pants. He moved some of his toys out of the way, but still couldn’t find his shoe. After he had checked everywhere in his room, he ran into the kitchen. “Mom, I can’t find my shoe. Will you wait while I look for it?” he asked.
His mom thought about how many times she’d told Alan to clean his room up. She said something to Alan’s grandma in a low voice. Then, she said to Alan,“You will have to stay home. Your dad and I will take your brother Alex to the Lego Land. Grandma will stay at home with you.”
“No! Please wait for me. I want to go to the Lego Land,” Alan cried. “I’m sorry, Alan. I’ve told you a dozen times to clean your room and you did not do it. You can’t find your shoe now. It’s your own fault for not cleaning your room. You will stay home.”
Alan ran into his bedroom, crying. His mom came to the door and said, “Alan, clean that room of yours before I get home. I’ve told Grandma not to give you any sweets until you make your room clean and tidy.” She went out with Alex and the brothers’ dad. After a minute, they drove away.

One day, when I was a first-year student in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kris. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd (书呆子).”
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a gang of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up, and I saw terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him. So I jogged over to him, and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw tears in his eyes. As I handed him his glasses, I said, “They are bad guys! They really should be punished.” He looked at me and said, “Hey, thanks!” There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to a private school before. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books.
