Anne’s sister Margot was very upset about that the family had to move. However, she knew that she had got to go through all the difficulties for her family. She found it difficult to settle and calm up in the hiding place, because she was concern about whether they would be discovered. She suffered from lonely, but she had to learn to like there. What he really missed was going outdoors and walking the dog for her neighbour. It was such fun watch it run loose in the park. She wished she could tell her neighbour face to face if she was sorry not to be able to do it any longer, but she know that was too dangerous!
3 . My son Sam is 16 and autistic (自闭症). There’s a lot of going on in that beautiful and brilliant mind of his, but even on a good day he can be easily at a loss. Throw in some diagnosed anxiety, an inability to read social cues (信号) and an unexpected change to his daily routine, and you have the way to deal with a very public meltdown (崩溃).
It was Sam’s very first day at high school. We’d set up a plan for how he’d get home: I’d pick him up outside the shop near his school at 3:30 pm and I believed this was a perfect plan. Unknown to me, very bad weather was on its way and I was unable to warm him to take a shelter.
With the combination of his dead phone battery and my dead car battery, I was running late and unable to communicate that to him. As a result, he was left alone and extremely frightened. He became very upset outside the shop, exactly where I’d told him to wait.
This was when a beautiful older Vietnamese lady not only went to CHECK ON him, but took him inside her shop, calmed him down, got my phone number form him and called me.
Five years later he continued to go into her shop every afternoon, bought a drink, had a chat and she sent him home with enough bread and rolls to feed a small nation.
Sam will graduate this year, and I’m increasingly feeling the need to drop by the shop to let this wonderful lady know that she has saved Sam, and that she has saved me. I’m not sure if I can communicate all of this, but at least I will get to thank her.
There are people I will not get to thank, though-the many kind strangers who have been there for Sam. And believe me, if you’re wondering if this world is a complete mess right now, I’m here to say that is not.
So I guess this is a love letter to those of you who have helped a stranger out of the goodness of your heart. Pleased know you are appreciated, that your beautiful heart and kindness are appreciated, and that, perhaps unknowingly, you have made a great difference in someone’s life.

4 . One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap (包装).
On September 11th, 1958, Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying, “I promised you a gift, and here it is.” What an honour! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. I told it over and over how much I loved it!
One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it.Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as “hopeless”, “pitiful”, and “dying”, which sounded ominous.
Christmas was coming. “Don’t expect any presents this year,” Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room.“If your baby brother lives, that’ll be Christmas enough.” As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. I’d never seen him cry before.
The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say, “What? He’s all right?” He hung up and shouted upstairs. “The hospital said we can bring Richard home!”
“Thank God!” I heard Mum cry.
From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them so happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty; they were filled with love!

One day, when I was a first-year student in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kris. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd (书呆子).”
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a gang of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up, and I saw terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him. So I jogged over to him, and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw tears in his eyes. As I handed him his glasses, I said, “They are bad guys! They really should be punished.” He looked at me and said, “Hey, thanks!” There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to a private school before. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books.

I always have difficulty in buying birthday presents. My idea never seems to go farther than ties, pens or cards. But, strangely enough, it did not take me long to decide on Tom’s birthday present. For the first time in life, I had a good idea ... I would buy him a bottle of champagne (香槟酒). Before the party began, Tom suggested that I should open the bottle. I put it between my knees and began to pull, but it remained unmoved. Soon a lot of people gathered round to watch the fight between me and the bottle. I could hear all kinds of “helpful” suggestions from them like “Break the top off”, “Use your teeth”, etc. But I was losing the fight. We were fighting on the-floor together, when all of a sudden there was aloud: “Pop” and the cork (塞子) shot up into the air, while the angry bottle showered (淋) everybody with champagne.

7 . Ten years ago, I used to be very fit.
There’s a lot of stress in my job. Perhaps that’s why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, but then I started filling my glass to the top. Then I had another glass, and then another.
Two months ago, I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn’t believe it. “I’m too young.” I said. Luckily it wasn’t very serious. I was in hospital a few days and they did a lot of tests.
Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something like I used to do. But if I do that, I won’t earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don’t know what I should do. What do you think?
