1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was the first week of Lily’s middle school. The bell’s ringing brought her out of her daydreaming. She nervously gathered her books, preparing to reach another classroom for the next new class.

Lily followed the other kids and rushed into the hallway. Others walked in groups, chatted, and laughed, using the break to socialize. Lily, instead, walked alone along the wall of the hallway, with her head down. She was a shy girl, afraid to speak in front of other kids, and didn’t think others would like her.

Lily finally sat in Mr. Johnson’s Language Arts class nervously. “Welcome to Language Arts,” said Mr. Johnson. He told jokes as he talked about English. Lily forgot to daydream and laughed along with the rest of the class. “We’ll have some fun with language,” he said. “Just wait and see.”

Fun was far beyond what Lily desired. She just wanted to be like other kids—running with friends in the hallway, laughing and joking between classes. Reminded of her pimply (长粉刺的) face, she felt hopeless and disappointed.

“Take out a piece of paper,” the teacher continued, when pointing at words on the blackboard. “Write for the next thirty minutes on this topic.” Lily began writing crazily as idea after idea fought for recognition in her head. The final result was a short story about a beautiful beach house. As she wrote, she could smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull of the sand beneath her feet. For just a moment, she forgot where she was. She was lost in the story.

“OK, pass your papers forward,” said the teacher. “Let’s see what we have.” For the rest of the class time, the teacher read each individual work aloud. Lily originally thought it would be awkward. However, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher’s voice. “He’s actually enjoying this,” she thought. When the class would be soon over, there were still fifteen students’ papers not read, including Lily’s paper. Then, Mr. Johnson announced his decision, asking these students to read their work themselves in front of the class next class.

Mr. Mosop’s Chickens

Mr. Mosop had a lot of chickens. But Pili Pili was rare and precious. I remember the day he brought her back to the village. “Her name shall be Pepper—Pili Pili,” he said, gently stroking (抚摸) her black-and-white feathers. He promised me, “Next time I get a chicken, you may choose a greater name.” Pili Pili was the pride of our village. But now she was missing. Everyone in the village joined in the search for her.

After school the next day, I ran all the way home. “Did they find Pili Pili?” I was out of breath. Mama sighed. “Yes, on the other side of the fence.” She nodded at the low fence of bushes that surrounded our village. Grace, my little sister, opened her eyes wide.“Ahyena (鼠狗) ATE Pili Pili! Only her FEATHERS are left!”

I ducked into our house. I took my notebook out of my bag as well as my most treasured possession: a box of markers. On a piece of paper I made a rough picture of our village and the smooth, blue hills all around it. Then I drew Pili Pili, the famous black-and-white chicken, standing strong and elegant. I was so busy drawing that I didn’t notice Grace had joined me on the floor. She was drawing something, pressing the tip of my purple marker flat.

“No, Grace!” I yelled, grabbing my marker. “What is that?”

“A hyena,” Grace said, and then ran outside to show Mr. Mosop her drawing. I followed.

The old man was weeding. He looked and. Grace ran over and threw her arms around his neck. “Did you cry?” Grace burst out. I rolled my eyes but Mr. Mosop laughed. “Me? An old man, cry over a chicken?” He smiled softly as we handed him our pictures. “Thank you, girls.”

The following day when I came home from school, Grace met me at the door of our house. “Mr. Mosop hns gone to market to buy a new chicken!” She pulled at the sleeve (袖子) of my school uniform. “What do you think he will call it?”

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“Tiki!” I yelled desperately.

Our dog, Tiki, had slipped out the door earlier that evening. Now I was searching the neighborhood trying to find him. My seven-year-old son, Jordan, was following behind.

I was worried about Jordan. He had lost so much already. The last few months had been difficult. After getting divorced, I could no longer afford our house in Indianapolis. Jordan and I moved in with my parents in northern Indiana. Jordan missed his friends and his old school. Losing his childhood dog was the last thing he needed.

We called out Tilki’s name until it was completely dark. We were forced to return home, empty-handed.

“Mom, it’s all new here. What if Tiki can’t find Grandma’s house?” asked Jordan. “It’s okay,” I said. “He’s wearing his collar and dog tag (标牌).” It was at that moment that I realized Tiki’s tag listed our address and phone number in Indianapolis. If someone found him, they’d have no way to reach me. I felt sick to my stomach.

The next day, I kept asking around to see if anyone had spotted him. But after two weeks, I began to lose hope.

One afternoon, I found Jordan crying in his room. “At school, we had to write about our wishes,” he said. “I wrote, ‘I wish my dog would come home.’ Mrs. Rush hung our papers in the hallway. Every time I see my paper, I feel sad.” My heart broke for him.

So later that week, when he put on a stained shirt from his old school back in Indianapolis, I just let it slide. If it helped him get through the school day, that was more important than looking put-together.

When he got home that afternoon, he told me the school custodian (管理员) had asked him about his shirt. “I told him we just moved here from Indianapolis,” said Jordan.

The next day, I got a call from Mrs. Rush. “I’m calling on behalf of our school custodian,” she began. “His grown daughter found a dog a few weeks ago, and he thinks it might be yours.”

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Elizabeth walked to the yard, carrying a bunch of daisies(雏菊).

“Beautiful flowers for, for... Oh, I’ll never get it right!” She cried, throwing the daisies on the ground. She had been practising her speech for a week.

Part of her couldn’t wait. This Saturday, the great Ana Wolff, famous pianist, would perform at the concert hall in town. For four years, Elizabeth had listened to Ms Wolffs recordings over and over again, loving the way the notes flowed like a rushing mountain stream.

Part of Elizabeth was terrified. Her music teacher at school, Mr Leaf, had asked her to present the flowers to Ms Wolff after the performance. But Elizabeth knew herself well. She had serious stage fright and she really hated it when she had to talk in front of people. Even so, Elizabeth was determined to take the challenge this time.

“How’s the speech going?” asked Elizabeth’s mother, “Want to practice on me?”

“No, thanks,” said Elizabeth, “Mum, I can’t do this! I’ll forget. I might even pass out(昏倒)!”

“Oh, honey. Think about it... sharing the stage with Ana Wolff. What an honour!” Mum gently comforted her.

Elizabeth kept practising. “Beautiful flowers for... for a beautiful performance...” She presented the flowers to the cat, the dog, even the statue in the garden. Soon it was Saturday night, Elizabeth stood at the backstage, behind the heavy black curtains. Holding the bouquet(花束)of red roses, she felt her heart racing wildly and her stomach tightened with nervousness.

The lights dimmed, and Ms Wolff began her performance. She swayed and nodded with her fingers dancing across the keys. Soft sad parts, loud angry parts, parts that sounded fun to play. Drawn into the music, Elizabeth forgot for a moment about the six words she had to say. With a flourish(挥舞), Ms Wolff played her final note. Applause thundered through the hall. People jumped to their feet and cheered.

Ms Wolff smiled and bowed. Then she walked off stage and into the wings(舞台侧面). Almost immediately, she returned to the stage for a second bow.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!

After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.

Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.

Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.

The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.

My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.

I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel of how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easygoing work surroundings.

The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.

I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but studying and training were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.

Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

I was excited. I had been invited to go to my friend's birthday party. Tori was not my best friend, but she was in my class and we did stuff together. And I liked to go to parties. I asked my mom and she said I could go, so I told Tori that I’d be there.

And then, two days later, my very, very best friend called. She and her family were going to Disneyland for the whole day. She invited me to go with them. Disneyland! I loved Disneyland so much. I really wanted to go... more than anything. I ran to ask my mom if it was okay. That’s when my mom reminded me that Tori’s party was on the same day. She said I couldn’t change my mind just because something better came along.

I was mad. So mad. Disneyland was my favorite place in the whole world and I loved to go there ... and I especially liked going with my best friend. My excitement about going to the birthday party was gone. Tori’s party would be okay but not as fun as a whole day at Disneyland and besides that, Tori wasn’t even my best friend. I begged my mom. She said no. I cried. I sulked (生闷气). My mom still said no.

My mom explained to me – once you accept an invitation to something, you can’t change your mind and go to something just because you want to do the other thing more. That isn’t nice. She asked me to think about how I would feel if someone did that to me. I didn’t want to admit it, but my mom was right. It would hurt my feelings if someone did that to me.

Although I didn’t want to, I told my best friend that l wouldn’t be able to go to Disneyland with her. So my friend and her family went to Disneyland and my mom dropped me off at Tori’s party.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

On a weekend, a woman won a big bag of coins at a game machine. She took a break for dinner with her husband in the hotel dining room. But first she wanted to put the coins in her room.

“I'll be right back and we'll go to eat," she told her husband. Then she carried the bag to the lift. As she was about to walk into the lift she noticed two men already aboard.

Both were huge, very huge figures. The woman was scared. Her first thought was: "These two are going to rob me.” Her next thought was: “Don't be afraid. They look like nice gentlemen.”

But fear seized her. She stood and stared at the two men. She felt anxious and ashamed. She hoped they didn't read her mind. Surely they knew her hesitation about joining them in the lift. It was all too obvious. Her face was red. She couldn't just stand there, so with an effort of will she picked up one foot and stepped forward and followed with the other foot and was on the lift. Avoiding eye contact, she turned around and faced the lift doors as they closed.

A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her fear increased! The lift didn't move. Panic consumed her. “Oh dear," she thought, “I'm about to be robbed!”

Her heart sank and sweat poured. Then one of the men said, “Hit the floor.” Instinct (本能) told her: Do what they tell you. The bag of coins flew upwards as she threw out her arms and collapsed on the lift carpet. A shower of coins rained down on her. “Take my money and spare me," she prayed. More seconds passed.

She heard one of the men say politely, "Madam, if you'll just tell us what floor you're going to, we'll push the button. "The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out .He couldn't help laughing.
