1 . When I was in fourth grade, I worked part-time as a paperboy. Mrs. Stanley was one of my customers. She’d watch me coming down her street, and by the time I’d biked up to her doorstep, there’d be a cold drink waiting. I’d sit and drink while she talked.

Mrs. Stanley talked mostly about her dead husband, “Mr. Stanley and I went shopping this morning.” she’d say. The first time she said that, soda(汽水) went up my nose.

I told my father how Mrs. Stanley talked as if Mr. Stanley were still alive. Dad said she was probably lonely, and that I ought to sit and listen and nod my head and smile, and maybe she’d work it out of her system. So that’s what I did, and it turned out Dad was right. After a while she seemed content to leave her husband over at the cemetery(墓地).

I finally quit delivering newspapers and didn’t see Mrs. Stanley for several years. Then we crossed paths at a church fund-raiser(募捐活动). She was spooning mashed potatoes and looking happy. Four years before, she’d had to offer her paperboy a drink to have someone to talk with. Now she had friends. Her husband was gone, but life went on.

I live in the city now, and my paperboy is a lady named Edna with three kids. She asks me how I’m doing. When I don’t say “fine”, she sticks around to hear my problems. On settling in the car, Grady put on the earphone and turned on the music. He neither wanted to join his brother nor joined any talk. After what seemed to be hours, the car stopped where they headed. Grady threw down his backpack and slammed the car door.

“This will be a lengthy week,“ he said unhappily to no one in particular. He looked around the campground. Hundreds of tall and green fir trees, some as tall as church towers, covered the mountainside like a green carpet. The sun would be setting soon. Grady thought maybe the heat wouldn't be unbearable. But actually now in the mountain, the hot stickiness of July was closely attached to him.

Grady hated camping, but it was something his family stuck to every summer. His father liked cooking over an open air, telling stories about how to survive things like bear attacks and bites of bees. His mother and Jared liked to hike and take pictures of animals. Jared had a collection of bug pictures that he had pinned to the walls in his half of their room. Grady thought they were just scary and proof that Jared was a strange kid.

They set up camp - two tents, one for his parents and one for himself and Jared. While everyone else started preparing dinner, Grady, looking for some place to cool down, set off for the nearby stream, which was deep enough to swim in.

Every girl dreams and Bonnie is no exception. When Bonnie was young, she had read dozens of books on how to be a ballerina(芭蕾舞者), Swan Lake(天鹅湖)was her favorite and she had always wanted to become the white swan in it. Later, she started taking ballet(芭蕾)lessons and all her teachers confirmed she was a good student. In the hope of becoming a great ballerina, she trained hard on a daily basis.

One day, she saw an advertisement that a famous ballerina troupe(舞团)would be performing in her hometown. And the whole town was talking about the troupe leader who was said to be the best ballet dancer in the world. Her thoughts ran wild. "I must meet the leader of the troupe and show him my skills" she said to herself.

She dressed herself in her best ballerina costume and managed to slip(溜)in the backstage without being noticed. To her luck, the leader entered the dressing room and she timidly knocked at the door "Come in" said a gentle voice. Opening the door, Bonnie saw a tall and slim man with a calm look on his face. She bravely approached him and handed him a bunch of red roses and in her excitement the thorns(刺)pricked(刺痛)her hand but she did not pay much attention to the pain.

The leader observed her action as she told him her dream. "Alright, you dance and I will give you my advice."

But half way through the dance he stopped her and said, "I'm sorry you're not good enough!" On hearing this, Bonnie 's eyes opened wide in shock. It was seconds before she could absorb what was said to her, "Not good enough?!" she asked in disbelief. "Yes, not good enough." replied the leader. Boiled in shame(羞)and rage(怒), Bonnie ran out of the dressing room as fast as her legs could carry her. The leader's words were a huge blow to her confidence. Despite being so sad, she didn't give up her dream.

Six months later, she heard that the same ballet troupe was performing in her town again.

Within three years, Bonnie had become a famous ballerina as she wanted.

6 . Captain Henry, a 98-year-old American retired fisherman, has become a first-time author, having written and published his autobiography In a Fisherman's Language after learning to read at the age of 91.

Mr.Henry spent most of his life without even his closest family members knowing he was illiterate. Forced to quit school in the third grade to take odd jobs, he kept the secret close to his chest, only telling his late wife. Henry's granddaughter, Marlisa, told reporters how he used tricks, like waiting for others to order at restaurants first, to avoid the issue.

A family argument in his 90s, she said, aroused his desire for education.“He signed a document he could not read about where he was going to live, Marlisa said. Starting with his name, he eventually moved on to the ABC's and children's books. He put them down since his wife fell ill. After the tragic loss of his wife, he went back to reading and began to log (记录) his life. He wrote about his family's voyage from Portugal to the US, how he went on to captain a boat, and his many journeys at sea.

His life stories have become so popular that nearly 800 copies were sold in the first two weeks after the book's release. One thousand more have since been printed as requests for the book flood in from as far as Germany. And now even Hollywood producers have approached Mr. Henry about buying the rights to his life story for a big screen adaptation.

The family also now has a book agent and a deal in the works to publish a second edition. Meanwhile, the family says they are reconnecting and closer than ever as a result of Henry's late-life efforts.“Everyone has a story,” Marlisa said, “It teaches that when you're down and out, never give up.”
