In my childhood, under the influence of my el der brother and my peers in the neighborhood, I tried a number of outdoor activities. Of course, I was not so taken by all of them. whether I was doing them for the first time or continuously. However, fate had its own plans in store. You never know when an outdoor activity will change my life.

The name of this activity is “fishing”. About ten years ago, I didn't really like the idea of sitting on the bank of a lake or river, spending long hours under the sun's ultraviolet rays, which can cause sunburns and skin damage, and anxiously anticipating some fish to be kind to take my bait(诱饵). In fact, I used to think of this outdoor activity as some kind of “hide-and-seek-game” that is popular with most young kids, except that it was much harder because I could see my “prey (猎物)” only after catching it.

However, all that changed when I paid a visit to my aunt in the countryside during a summer holiday. I was finally convinced by one of my cousins to accompany him to a nearby lake in order to do some fishing practice with him. In fact, he even assured me that fish would eat my baits. So I agreed and went to the lake expecting to catch some fish. Before throwing my fishing line into the water, my cousin did some tricks attaching some sort of food to my fishing pole.

Learning to fish in a river or lake can be challenging for the beginners like me. The act of dropping a line is easy, but being a successful fisher is hard. That's why they call it fishing but not catching But with practice and patience, it can become easier over time. Patience is essential in lake fishing. It may take some time to find the right spot or lure (鱼饵) that will attract fish.

When I was a kid, my parents and I lived near the forest. They often told me that our family was a team that needed to work together for the household to function smoothly. There was always an abundance of work to do — cooking, cleaning, and walking dogs. I volunteered to walk our dog, Max, who had been adopted one month before. I never dared let this giant dog off the lead (牵狗绳), just in case he took off.

One morning, we were walking along in the forest when Max started pulling on the lead. At first, I was able to hold on despite the wet ground from a recent shower. But the more I tried to stop him pulling, the more it turned into a tug of war. And thanks to the slippery ground, I lost.

Pulling his lead, Max shot off like a bullet, leaving me screaming behind. I chased him but lost my footing and fell face-first into some mud. I stumbled (踉跄) to my feet, but looking ahead, I found him running back towards me. I thought he was going to stop and give me his “Sorry” look. But instead, the dog shot past me and returned after a while.

As soon as we got home, my mother immediately attended to Max with a warm towel and a doggy treat. I thought seeing me stumbling and covered in mud, I would also get a warm cup of tea and a motherly kiss. Instead, I got a very loud lecture about letting the dog loose in the forest.

I felt frustrated. It wasn’t fair that she didn’t understand how difficult it was to control Max. I fought back, “Stop lecturing me! Why is everything my fault?” With these words, I stormed into my bedroom and slammed the door shut.

In the evening, I heard my mother call Max and take him out. It wasn’t long before I heard my mother screaming and the door opening again.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was a 15-year-old girl when my beloved grandma Rosie was placed in a group home in Brookfield because of sharply declining memory. I can vividly remember the unpleasant environments inside the nursing home. That impression has ultimately impacted me in a very great way, even after I graduated from university with a degree in architecture.

Grandma Rosie was the heart of our family. Her little two-bedroom home was truly where all her children and grandchildren gathered. She was also an amazing cook and her specialty was fried pork steak. Most of my nephews and nieces were fans of her specialty. She lived alone after my grandpa passed away but was cared by many relatives and friends. When she was in her late 60s, we began to witness a significant memory impairment (受损) in her. Everyone started checking up on her. A frequent question that people would ask her, “What did you have for dinner?”, almost always brought the same answer — fried pork steak. Every day she would report making fried pork steak. One day a group of us went to her house secretly, and found she was making fried pork steak!

After some lengthy consideration, our family were concerned for her condition and ultimately decided to place Rosie in a group home in Brookfield. A year later, Rosie caught heart disease and her condition required her to be moved to a nursing home in Oconomowoc. Her memory also declined sharply and she no longer remembered our names. It was heartbreaking for our family to know that.

By that time, I was in high school and thinking about plans for college. Seeing the cold, sterile (呆板的) long hallways and unfriendly surroundings in the nursing home, I was determined to become a professional architect concentrating on senior care and health care design. I wanted to design living space where seniors can not only live but benefit from lovely environments.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Alice had been optimistic and the heart of her family. Unfortunately, one day cancer attacked her brain. Although suffering from illness, Alice remained a source of encouragement, especially for Jenny, her 12-year-old daughter. Alice often read inspiring stories to her, helped with her homework, and cheered her up to solve difficulties bravely. When Alice’s condition worsened, the family’s daily life was enveloped in the shadow of uncertainty and sorrow.

In her final days, Alice made a video without letting Jenny know, and handed it to her husband John. She wanted Jenny to remember her when she grew up, not as the woman weakened by illness, but as the loving and optimistic mother she had always been.

After Alice’s passing, Jenny put her mother’s photographs in a box and locked herself in her own room. For her, going into the empty living room where she and her mother read together was heartbreaking. Even the routine of going to school, once a joyful activity shared with her mother, now became an unbearable pain. John tried his best to ease the pain left by Alice. He cooked Jenny her favorite meals, read bedtime stories, and even tried braiding (编) her hair, just the way Alice used to do. But Jenny, lost in sorrow, found little comfort in these efforts.

“Dad, I won’t go to school. I just want to be left alone,” Jenny shouted, her voice full of anger and hopelessness, when John asked her to prepare for school. John understood her pain but felt helpless. That was when he decided to show Jenny the video Alice had made. He hoped that hearing her mother’s voice might bring some comfort to Jenny. Gently walking upstairs and knocking on Jenny’s door, he entered with a video player. “Your mom left something for you,” he said, trying to mask his own sadness with a hopeful smile. Jenny, still teary-eyed, hesitated but eventually pressed the “play” button.

The Chore Chain(家务大联手)

“Washing windows is the worst chore in the world,” Maddie complained. As she washed her towel again, Maddie noticed her neighbor Mr. Valdez was bending and holding on to a tree. “Mr. Valdez,”Maddie called as she walked through the leaves on the ground. “How are you?” “Well, Maddie, my back hurt when I raked(耙) these leaves,”Mr. Valdez said. “Raking is hard for me.” “I’ll rake them for you. Just take a rest,”Maddie volunteered. She knew Mr. Valdez didn’t have good health.

“Thank you so much,” Mr. Valdez said. “I think I’ll go to see my friend Mr. Iguchi across the street. He is a doctor and able to ease my pain.” Mr. Valdez’s trees lost many leaves. The leaves looked lovely for Maddie. “This will keep me busy all afternoon,” Maddie thought happily as her leaf pile grew. Well, almost all afternoon, she reminded herself she still had to clean the windows.

Maddie finally made her small leaf pile into one huge mountain. She stared first at her leaf mountain, then at Mr. Valdez’s clean yard. “I can’t put off cleaning those windows any longer,” Maddie thought. “I’ll bag these leaves later. It’s a pity that I don’t have time to play in my mountain.” She turned toward her house, and then stopped.

She unexpectedly found that Mr. Iguchi was facing her living room windows and washing the windows.“Mr. Iguchi, why are you cleaning my windows?” Maddie ran across the yard and asked. “And you almost finish it!” Surprised by Maddie’s arrival, Mr. Iguchi froze for an instant. Before he got a chance to answer, Mr. Valdez explained as he crossed the street from Mr. Iguchi’s house. “When I stopped to visit Mr. Iguchi, he was starting to cut some potatoes for a salad,” Mr. Valdez said. “However, I told by his troubled look that he disliked that work.”

Tomato Changed My Life

Doing things-without being planned was never my strength.

As a 14-year-old, I would refuse to go for walks around the block with my friends if I was the least bit behind in my schoolwork.

Unlike most teenagers, I lived not in my room, but in an unused kitchen upstairs where I spread my books and papers on a large round table. I spent considerable time there, working continuously for hours, and my mother worried. She would try to lure (引诱) me away. “Come and watch the parade!” she would call from downstairs. “All neighbors are out there!” She thought of all kinds of tricks-the swimming pool, ice cream, stray cats and turtles-to remove me from my -studies, but nothing ever worked.

Later, in college, the pattern continued. The library and my college dorm replaced the unused kitchen at home. When spring came along friends would stop by my dorm or peer into my library room to persuade me to play Frisbee on the lawn. “No, I would almost always say.” I have too much to do.

My college study days were gone, but not my need and love for schedules. My friends and sisters tried to keep me away from my plans, but they were hardly ever successful.

This summer, though, while house sitting for my parents, I was persuaded to change my plans in the most unexpected way. The sight of tomatoes growing in my mother’s garden lured me out of my tightly scheduled world. They drew me with the power of a lover’s gaze. Hundreds of them were turning ripe and red by the minute, decorating the garden like decorations on a Christmas tree.

“If I have time, I’ll make tomato sauce (番茄酱).” I told myself. But my long week in the house by myself was already filled with things to do: writing, and finishing a project that I brought home from the office.

Then, watching the fascinating tomatoes continuously falling to the ground in ever-greater numbers, again I mentally argued about all the things I had planned and needed to do.

Contrary to what most people believe, busking (卖艺) is legal in the UK. But you need to have a license to do it. And when you’re the one of the few who has got a license to busk you can only busk in certain places. Plus, your “salary” is dependent on how much is given to you by the public. Buskers can earn anywhere from £20 to £50 per hour and there are some with a goal of reaching £100 per hour. But it varies day by day, so every pence and pound matters to them. There are times though, when buskers or good people in general recognize when someone needs the money more than them. That was the case with Liv Harland.

Liv Harland is a singer from York. Scotland, who’s been busking for about five years now. She said when she first started out, she was so nervous that she hid in an alleyway (小巷). Now she’s so used to busking that she can do it in any location. When she sings, some people there will drop money in her bag as tips.

In Scotland, there are around 34.000 homeless people in the country at present. COVID-19 and the energy crisis have made their life more difficult. Most of them are out of work and unable to pay the rent. The people with nowhere to go are forced to do what they can to survive. They go begging in the street, and some even eat food thrown into dustbins. Faced with such a situation, Liv always lends a helping hand.

One morning, Liv was busking in a busy area in York when she noticed a homeless man digging through the garbage cans near by. After careful observation. she found the man was searching them for food.

Lian gazed awesomely at the enormous redwood trees towering overhead. Her family had toured many fantastic historic sites during their vacation to Northern California. Visiting the splendid redwoods, something Lian had always wanted to do, was the icing on the cake.

Lian’s father, Mr. Yee, interrupted her thoughts. “Shake a leg everyone,” he said, clapping his hands quickly. “We don’t want to miss our flight.”

Lian and her older brother Shing hurried back to the family’s rental car. Their mother was already in the front passenger seat, anxiously tapping her fingertips against the window. Lian knew her mother was worried about missing their flight home. Mrs. Yee had wanted to stay close to the airport during the last morning of their vacation, but everyone else wanted to see the giant redwood trees. She finally gave in.

Mr. Yee slid into the driver’s seat. “We have two hours before we need to check in at the airport,” he said, checking his watch. “Traffic of the city shouldn’t be a problem at this time of day. We’ll have plenty of time to spare.”

Lian admired the trees as they drove through the park. Shing’s attention, however, was focused elsewhere. “Hey, Dad, I think you were supposed to turn there,” he said, pointing over his shoulder at a road marker. “Good catch, Shing,” replied Mr. Yee. It took several minutes to find a place to turn around on the narrow road. They retraced (折回) their route and tried again. This time, Lian and Shing kept their eyes wide open watching for markers. They successfully exited the park.

Lian and Shing were chatting quietly when they heard a loud“Bang”. Lian’s side of the car suddenly sunk low to the ground. Mr. Yee calmly slowed down and pulled the car to the side of the road. “Everybody stay in the car,” he ordered. He turned on the warning lights and got out to inspect the car. “The axle(轴) is damaged,” he sighed.

One night, when we were having dinner, suddenly Mom let out, “I have a great idea!” My sister Keira and I looked at each other, feeling confused and wondering what she wanted to say.

“What if,” she said, with a long pause, “we furnish Nancy’s apartment while she’s away?”

Nancy, our nanny (保姆) had returned to her hometown to get her children and bring them back with her. When her children were only one and five years old, she had left them to work as a caregiver abroad where the working conditions were not very good. Later, through friends, Nancy heard that our country was the land of opportunity. With rich working experience, Nancy came to our house and here we got along well with each other although sometimes we had difficulty in communication because of language.

Five years after her arrival and working here, she was allowed to apply for a permanent resident’s statue. It took so long to get it, so we celebrated with a cake the night the letter that informed her finally came.

“Could you do me a big favor?” Nancy asked Mom before she left for her hometown. ”I’ve ordered some mattresses (床垫) so we have something to sleep on when we arrive. Do you think you could receive them and let the delivery man deliver it into my apartment?“

”No problem,“ said Mom.

”Hey Mom, I hate to burst your bubble (幻想),” I said, “but how are we possibly going to furnish an entire apartment? ”

“Well, we have some extra stuff in the attic,” she replied. “Maybe we can help our neighbors and Nancy at the same time. The neighbors can donate their extras, and we can piece together a great home for Nancy. Let’s send an e-mail and see.” So the e-mail went to about seventy neighbors in our community.

10 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One day in February 2016, when my friend, Austin, invited me to hike the Ka’au Crater Trail in Honolulu, I jumped at the chance. Together with four of his friends, Jack, Dan, Carson and Mali, we were excited to check out the challenging track. We’d see three waterfalls, and a volcanic crater.

Stretching over eight kilometers, there were no steps on the track—just muddy paths formed on the rock face by other hikers. Climbing upstream, the journey was not for the faint-hearted (胆小的). We had to climb through thick roots and overgrown vegetation. But I knew the view from the top would be incredible. Finally, after an hour and a half, we stopped for our final rest before the peak.

“I’m going to check it out!” Austin said. “I’ll join you,” I replied, eager to see the top.

Racing up the last stretch, I felt excited as I walked over to the edge of the final waterfall where I turned my camera on. When I moved closer to the edge to get a better look, my foot suddenly gave way on a wet rock, sending me falling feet-first over the edge.

I desperately reached out to hang on to any rocks but I couldn’t get one as I fell to the bottom 15 meters below, scraping (刮) against rocks as I went.

As I fell, it felt like time stood still. “Was I going to be badly hurt?” I thought.

In a moment of clarity (清醒) before I reached the bottom, I twisted my body to the side and tucked (蜷缩) myself in a ball. It was a position I’d learned in volleyball training, aimed at reducing the impact of a fall. Landing in the water with a huge splash, after around 20 seconds I managed to lift my head out, but struggled to breath and I could taste blood.

“I’ve got to get myself out,” I realized, walking out to reach the edge of the pool as my visions became unclear. Holding the rocks tightly, I felt pain tore through my body and blood flowed from deep wounds on my left arm and left bottom.
