2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Sophie was dressed and all ready for her very first dance recital (舞蹈表演). When she started dance class last year, she didn’t know about the recital. She heard people talk about the recital but she didn’t know what it was. The recital was a chance for all of the parents and grandparents to see the dance students dance. It was at the high school every year and Sophie was going to dance on the stage in front of everyone. She did not like the thought of that. It scared her.

Yesterday she practiced her dance for the first time on the stage. There were only a few moms watching so it wasn’t too bad. But the thought of dancing in front of lots of people to night was really scary.

“All ready to go?” Mom asked.

“Yes. I guess,” Sophie said.

“You don’t sound like you are ready. What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know. I don’t feel so good. I’m kind of afraid.”

Mom sat on the edge of Sophie’s bed. “Remember yesterday when you practiced and I was right in the front row? You did just fine!”

“But today there will be so many people!”

“When you go out on the stage, you just look right where I was sitting yesterday. I will be in that same seat. You just look at me and it will be just like yesterday! Let’s go!”

“What about the rest of the family?” she asked. “They are coming in the other car. We have to be there a little early,” her mother replied.

Sophie thought about what her mom said all the way to the high school. Mom was always right, but Sophie wasn’t sure this time. She still hated the thought of dancing in front of all those people. When it was time for her to dance, Sophie thought about what Mom told her. She certainly hoped Mom was right. She felt her mother’s words ringing in her ears. The music began to play.

3 . My husband was killed on September 11, 2001; he worked in WTC, well above the impact floors. On his birthday in March, 2002, I went to the site that used to be the WTC. It wasn't cleaned up yet; in fact it was ugly as hell and smelled about the same, and access was still pretty chaotic. I got to the Century 21 department store across the street, and stood against the wall. I broke down.

A guy who was working across the street at the site which was still a full-on disaster area—saw me and came across. "Who did you lose?" he asked. "My husband," I said, through ugly tears, and I told the guy what firm my husband had worked for, and that it was his birthday.

They guy turned out to be a firefighter. He reached into his front pocket. "This is actually really rare. Not a lot of glass survived; it just vaporized." And he pressed it into my hand.

He sensed my doubt and said, "Maybe it is for nothing. But crying all the day could be for something?"

I still have it. It's not that the guy was giving up a valuable souvenir. It was that he was acknowledging my connection to that little piece of glass, and putting it where he thought it belonged—that, and he needed to give me something that in some small way I could hold onto and focus on, instead of the hurt. This was how he could do that in that one moment.

I was so bound up in my own head that I never even asked his name; he didn't ask mine either. If he's out there now, I want to tell him that the little piece of glass made me start to think that maybe there were things, little things, short moments, small pieces, that last no matter what.

I want to say to him: thanks for that.

1. Why did she go to the site?
A.She decided to do some shopping.B.She missed her husband very much.
C.She intended to meet the firefighter.D.She meant to look at the ruined WTC.
2. The firefighter gave her a piece of glass to ________.
A.honor her husbandB.lift her spirits
C.persuade her to leaveD.remove her doubt
3. What was her attitude to the firefighter?
A.Appreciative.B.Doubtful.C.Disapproving.D.Reserved.

4 . Todd Endris was surfing when a 15-foot shark hit him three times, but thanks to a couple of dolphins and a friend he survived.

The attack occurred on Tuesday, Aug. 28, just before 11 a.m. at Marina State Park off Monterey, Calif, where 24-year-old Todd Endris had gone with friends for a day of the sport they love.

“It came out of nowhere. There’s no warning at all. It was just a giant shark,” Endris said. The shark hit him fast as Endris was sitting on his surfboard. “The second time, he came down and clamped on my body --- sandwiched my board and my body in his mouth,” Endris said.

That attack wounded his back seriously. The third time, the shark tried to swallow Endris’ right leg.

The dolphins, which had been swimming freely in the surf all along, showed up then. They circled him, keeping the shark at bay, and enabled Endris to get back on his board and catch a wave to the shore.

His friend, Brian Simpson, is an X-ray technician in a hospital. He had seen Endris coming in and knew he was hurt. Blood was pumping out of the leg, which had been bitten to the bone, and Endris, who lost half his blood, became very pale. To stop the blood loss, Simpson used his surf leash(挽绳)as a tourniquet(绷带)which probably saved his life.

“Thanks to this guy,” Endris said, referring to Simpson, “once I got to the beach, he was calming me down and keeping me from losing more blood by telling me to slow my breathing and really just be calm. They wouldn’t let me look at my wounds at all, which really helped.”

Seven weeks later, he was well enough to go surfing again, and the place he went to was in the same spot where he almost lost his life. It wasn’t easy to go back in the water.

“You really have to face your fears,” he told a reporter from New York Times. “I’m a surfer at heart, and that’s not something I can give up easily. It was hard. But it was something you have to do.”

1. What is the passage intended to tell us?
A.The importance of first aid.B.The danger of surfing.
C.Endris’s survival in a shark attackD.The value of friendship.
2. The underlined word “clamp” in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.
A.press hard.B.hold tightly.
C.drop sharply.D.dance happily.
3. What do you know about Todd Endris from the last two paragraphs?
A.He is very chicken-hearted.B.He is extremely determined.
C.He is rather cautious.D.He is quite ridiculous.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事

When Jayce Crowder was in kindergarten, he began noticing that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. But he had only one.

It started when one boy teased him. Jayce was in a bad mood. He'd return home in Des Moines, Iowa, with questions: Why am I different? Why me? Why? "He actually told us that he was mad at looking so different from others," said his mother, Cortney Lewis. "That really hurt him." Lewis admitted she didn't know what to do at that point. How could she provide answers to her son's questions when she had never found those answers herself?

A few weeks later, Lewis came home from her job and turned on the TV to a news story about Trashaun Willis, an eighth grader from Washington middle school, Iowa. The boy, then 14, had become an Internetstar after posting videos of his slam dunk(扣篮), and, like Jayce, he was missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in. He was shocked, staring at one dunk after another.

At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce—he'd see a shining role model with a seemingly similar born disability. And had it stayed just that, Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know that a family friend had already reached out to the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to encourage Jayce and build his confidence.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was Christmas Day. Pappy was working alone fixing an old lantern in the backroom when he heard the ringing of his bell on the shop door. The bell, which produced a uniquely pleasant sound, had been in Pappy’s family for over a hundred years. He valued it dearly and enjoyed sharing its song with all who came to his shop. Although the bell hung on the inside of the main door, Pappy had tied a wire to the screen door so that it would ring whether the inner door was open or not. Hearing the bell, he left the backroom to greet his customer.

“And how can I help you, little lady?” Pappy’s voice was joyful.

“Hello, sir.” The little girl spoke almost in a whisper. She looked at Pappy with her big brown eyes, and then slowly scanned the room in search of something special. Shyly she told him, “I’d like to buy a present, sir.”

“Well, let’s see,” Pappy said, “who is this present for?”

“My grandpa. It’s for my grandpa. But I don’t know what to get.”

Pappy began to make suggestions. “How about a pocket watch? It’s in good condition.” The little girl didn’t answer. She had walked to the doorway and put her small hand on the door. She shook the door gently to ring the bell. Pappy’s face seemed to glow as he saw her smiling with excitement.

“This is just right,” the little girl said. “Momma says grandpa loves music.”

Just then, Pappy’s expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl’s heart, he told her, “I’m sorry, Missy. That’s not for sale. Maybe your grandpa would like this little radio.”

The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed, “No, I don’t think so.”

In an effort to help her understand, Pappy told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged (疏远的) daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.
