1 . Photography has been my passion ever since I was old enough to pick up a camera, but today I want to share with you the 15 most treasured photos of mine, and I didn’t take any of them. There were no art directors, no stylists, no chance for re shoots, not even any regard for lighting. In fact, most of them were taken by random tourists.
My story begins when I was in New York City for a speaking engagement, and my wife took this picture of me holding my daughter on her first birthday. We’re on the corner of 57th and 5th. We happened to be back in New York exactly a year later, so we decided to take the same picture.
Approaching my daughter’s third birthday, my wife said, “Hey, why don’t you take Sabina back to New York and make it a father-daughter trip?” This is when we started asking passing tourists to take the picture.
You know, it’s remarkable how universal the gesture is of handing your camera to a total stranger. No one’s ever refused, and luckily no one’s ever runoff with our camera.
Back then, we had no idea how much this trip would change our lives. It’s really become sacred to us. This one was taken just weeks after 911, and I found myself trying to explain what had happened that day in ways a five-year-old could understand.
So, these photos are far more than a specific trip. They’re also ways for us to freeze time and reflect on our times and how we change from year to year, and not just physically, but in every way. Because while we take the same photo, our views change, and she reaches new milestones, and I get to see life through her eyes, and how she interacts with and sees everything. This very focused time we get to spend together is something we treasure and expect the entire year. One of the most important things we all make is memories.
So, I want to share the idea of taking an active role in consciously creating memories. I want to encourage everyone today to get in the shot, and don’t hesitate to go up to someone and ask, “Will you take our picture? Thank you.”

2 . No party? No problem. These people found a way to celebrate their special day that was just as fun and even more meaningful than a traditional birthday party.
On the e-vite (电子邀请函) for Mikayla Gounard’s birthday party, she told her friends that she didn’t want presents. “I didn’t really need anything,” she said. “Everything they would have given me was plastic and stuff I really didn’t need.”
Instead, she asked for donations to help the homeless man, David Sean Currey, who found and returned Gounard’s grandmother’s lost wallet. She was super inspired by that story. She wanted to pay forward the kindness the stranger showed her grandmother.
On Dec. 22, her 12th birthday, Gounard raised $479. A GoFundMe raised an additional $55,000,which Gounard gave to David Sean Currey, along with a note saying, “In a dark tunnel, there is always light.” The homeless man started crying. He was able to check into a hotel, and open a bank account.
Across the country, kids and adults are having pay-it-forward parties, skipping traditional birthday celebrations, foregoing gifts, and choosing to spread kindness and help others.
After the devastating Texas snow and ice storm, Texas State Senator Dawn Buckingham spent her birthday on Feb. 2l in Harper. Texas handed out water and food and supplies to people who had no power for 10 days. Buckingham also invited strangers into her home to use her gas stove to cook meals. It was the end of hunting season — and she had a freezer full of venison she shared with strangers. “There’s nothing better than helping those who need help on your birthday,” Buckingham said on her birthday morning.

4 . It's amazing how often we take advantage of things in life. When we're used to something, we don't always appreciate how lucky we are to have it. While we're here complaining that our WiFi isn't fast enough and our videos keep buffering (卡顿), there are people in Africa who don't even get to eat three meals a day. While most people work hard for the things they own, it's important to stop and think of what others don't have every now and again. You may not think that shoes are something worth going crazy over, but the Uganda woman would disagree. After all, she went wild when she put a pair on for the first time in her life.
That's what Laura Grier did one day. The woman was in Bwindi National Park, Uganda, when she felt it necessary to stop and help someone by the side of the road. The person in question was standing around without any shoes on, and the sight convinced Grier to give up her own footwear. She had more shoes at home, while this woman had never even worn a pair before.
Laura's generosity was definitely appreciated by the stranger who treated her benefactor (恩人) to a celebratory dance. The woman couldn't keep the smile from her face as she went wild in her brand-new shoes. Grier was thrilled that her good deed had made the stranger so happy, and she cheered on the Ugandan woman as she danced in the street.
The next time you buy a pair of shoes, remember how lucky you are to have them.

7 . I’ve never been the kind of person to say, “it’s the thought that counts” when it comes to gifts. That was until a couple of weeks ago, when my kids gave me a present that blew me away.
For years now, I’ve been wanting to sell our home, the place where my husband and I raised our kids. But to me, this house is much more than just a building.
In the front room, there’s a wall that has hundreds of pencil lines, marking the progress of my children’s growth.
Every growth stage is marked in grey, with each child’s name and the date they were measured. Of all the objects and all the memories, it’s this one thing in a home that’s the hardest to leave behind. Friends I know have returned home after work only to discover their wall of heights has been freshly painted over. A new paint job wouldn’t normally be greeted by tears, but erasing that evidence of motherhood hurts more than it should. Our kids grow in so many ways, but the wall is physical evidence of their progress, right there for everyone to see.
Over the years, I’ve talked about how much I would hate leaving that wall behind when I moved, even though the last marks were made 10 years ago when my kids stopped growing.
So one day, while I was at work, my children decided to do something about it.
They hired Jacquie Manning, a professional photographer whose work is about capturing (捕捉) the beautiful things in life, from clear lakes and skies to diamonds and ballgowns (舞会礼服).
She came to our house while I was at work, and over several hours, took photos of the hundreds of drawings and lines, little grey fingerprints (手印), and old marks. Somehow, she managed to photograph all those years of memories perfectly. Afterwards, she put all the photos together into one image, transforming them into a beautiful history of my family.
Three weeks later, my children’s wonderful gift made its way to me—a life-size photo of the pencil lines and fingerprints that represents entire lifetimes of love and growth.

I still remember an incident which happened last year. In a sunny spring morning, I was walking to school while someone called out, “Look! A cat!” I looked up and notice a little cat trembling in a tree. Obviously the cat could climb up the tree, but they didn’t dare to get down. We called to ask the kitty come down, however, it was so frightened to move. The girl wanted to call 119, but I said, “The fireman are busy enough. Let me do it.” I climbed up the tree and slow approached the cat. Finally, I caught it and got down. I was so delighted for what I had done. Care for small animals is our duty, do you think so?
9 . Most of us have lost our wallet at some stage in our lives. But few would imagine having it returned after a nearly seven-decade gap. Edward Parker dropped his wallet in 1950 into an inaccessible spot behind a bookshelf, while working as an electrician, repairing World War Two bomb damage in the palace. The wallet stayed there until this year when a builder, doing some restoration work, finally found it.
The wallet is a time capsule. Its leather and webbing has long ago started to disintegrate. But it contains numerous pictures of family, invoices (发票), receipts, old union cards, results of a chest X-ray (sent to him in 1948, the same year as the NHS was founded), a national service card dated 9 December 1944 and a medical insurance card. His business cards-E Parker, Electrical Contractor-seem almost original. Reflecting the typical methods of contact of the time, they have an address but no telephone number.
A month ago I was speaking a press officer Lambeth Palace and he mentioned that the wallet had just been handed in. We thought it might be nice to try and work out whose it was and give it back to the family. Edward Parker is a pretty common name, but his medical card contained two places of residence-Poets Road and Springdale Road in north London. From this, Islington Council were able to find details of a marriage between Edward Parker and Constance Butler in 1947.
That information was enough to work out that he was still alive and in a care home in Essex, so I went to visit him. Now 89, Edward has dementia (痴呆), but he was clearly happy to get the wallet and in particular, the photographs back. He pointed out pictures of his mother and father, his brother, his cousins and his wife Constance, who was with him when I visited. He hadn't seen a picture of his father since he lost the wallet, Constance, 90, says.
