Poor Bobby was getting cold sitting out in the backyard in the snow. With only one dime (10美分硬币) in hand, he could not come up with an idea for his mother’s birthday gift. Ever since his father had passed away, the family of five had struggled. Although the family was short of money, they had love and family unity(团结).
Bobby had three sisters, all of whom had already made beautiful gifts for their mother. Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby kicked the snow and started to walk down to the street where the stores opened. Anyway, he wanted to try his luck.
Bringing together all his courage, he walked into the first store he saw. His heart quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime. Finally he saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his dime. Then he put his hand on Bobby’s shoulder gently and said, “You just wait here and I’ll see what I can do for you.” Then the shop owner left. All alone in the shop, Bobby began to feel alone and afraid. After a little while, the shop owner came out with a bunch of red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver bow.

3 . “Time flies. Youth fades. Treasure each moment of your life,” the Band for One, made up of five people, sang the lyrics (歌词) soulfully during a performance in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, on November 7, 2020.
Behind the band, there was a picture of a young man named Philip Hancock shown on the screen. And he is the reason why they were all there. Hancock was a 27-year-old Australian who taught English in Chongqing. When he died in 2018 because of a disease, his parents followed his wishes and donated (捐献) his organs (器官).
The five people introduced themselves on stage. They were the ones who received Philip’s organs. “Last November, the Red Cross official s told me Philip’s parents mentioned that he loved music and dreamed of having his own band one day,” said Chen Xianjun, a recipient (接受者). Then, Chen decided to form a band in memory of Philip, and so did the other four recipients.
Since they had no music experience, they had to start from the very beginning. From learning the guitar, to taking on the drums, they took time out of their busy lives to practice over the past year. Peter Hancock, Philip’s father, said after watching the band’s performance, his biggest wish is for the five to enjoy their lives more.
Organ donation is not only the best way to honor a loved one, but also a remarkable way to save the lives of others. China faces a serious shortage of organs, with about 300,000 people waiting for organ transplant surgeries each year. But the good news is, more and more people have been signing up to be organ donors, showing the spirit of selflessness that Philip and so many others have shown.

It was New Year’s Day, the first day of the year. Lucky for me, it was a day off, so I was thinking about getting my bank work out of the way. The bank person, an elderly gentleman with a white beard, was, as usual, curt (简短失礼的,简略的) to my polite “Happy New Year.” He nodded and I sat in front of him.
Minutes passed but nothing happened.
Then very uncertain and embarrassed, I put my form and booklet (小册子) in front of him. He was busy filling up entries in his register (登记簿). After a few minutes he took my form and from his cabinet he took out a very thick file from which he started filling in my details. I sat there wondering why we had computerized banking if we were still filling in forms and registers.
After waiting for a few more minutes, in which I showed all signs of being impatient, I asked him if my work was done. The moment I uttered the words, I felt as if a bombshell had fallen on him. He shouted, “Nothing is done, it will take time!”
Just then I saw his morning cup of tea which had been lying there for the last ten minutes, untouched. The tea had turned almost cold while he was doing his work. Suddenly I felt what this man, who had been working at this counter for the last God-knows-how-many years, must be feeling when customers like me come who are always in a hurry to get their work done.

9 . Imagine being told that you will never walk again! That was what doctors told the world-famous gymnast (体操运动员) Kieran Behan after they removed a cancerous tumor (肿瘤) from his leg when he was only ten years old. The operation went so badly that he woke up crying in terrible pain. Up to then, he had been crazy about gymnastics and was determined to become an Olympic champion. But how could he do that when he could not even walk now and was sitting in a wheelchair?
Kieran was going to show them and he started on the long road to recovery. He was 15 months in a wheelchair but he kept on exercising and was back in the gym. But within a few months he fell from the high bar and suffered a serious head injury, which caused frequent blackouts. Thus, he missed a whole year at school but the gym was beckoning (召唤) again. This time though, he had to overcome the challenges of that awful injury and getting back his balance. He returned to school using a walking stick but was cruelly laughed at by his classmates.
It took him three years to get back to where he had been before he injured his head. But unfortunately, he then suffered more injuries. Even just after he had been chosen for the European Championships, his knee was broken. Behan has said that was when he was about to give up.
But he never gave up and finally succeeded in becoming the Challenge World Cup floor champion in 2011, and his greatest moment of honor was when he attended the London 2012 Olympics. He had become an Olympic athlete after being through such sufferings. He is really a glorious example of the Olympic spirit.

10 . Delia was a young pianist. Her husband, Joe, was a young artist.
Each of them was taking lessons: Joe with a famous art teacher, and Delia with a great pianist from Germany. Their teachers were the very best, so lessons were expensive, more than they could really afford, but…when you love your art, nothing is too much.
But soon the money began to run out, and they couldn’t afford the lessons anymore.
Then one day Delia came back home and told Joe that she had met a man whose daughter, Sally, wanted to learn the piano, and he was going to pay her $ 50 an hour.
“Delia,” Joe said, “I’ll be much happier if you keep up your lessons,” Delia said it didn’t matter. “When I’ve had some money, I’ll continue.” But Joe also decided to stop his lessons, to draw pictures and sell them.
A few days later, Joe came home and proudly took $ 200 from his pocket. “I met a man from Vermont,” he said, “who bought one of my pictures. And he wants to buy more!”
________. They didn’t have to worry any more about money.
Then, one day, Joe came home and saw that Delia’s hand was wrapped in a bandage(绷带). He asked her what had happened. “Oh,” said Delia. “My student, Sally, asked me to make some coffee for her. I dropped the coffee and burned my hand. Sally went straight to the drugstore and got this bandage for me. ”
“Delia, what have you been doing the last two weeks?” Joe asked. She tried not to tell him, but the tears came. “Oh Joe, I couldn’t get any students, so I worked as a waitress in a restaurant. Today, I burned my hand with hot water. So I can’t work anymore. But we’ll still have money from the man in Vermont, won’t we?”
Joe looked at her. “There’s no man in Vermont,” he said. “I’ve been working in a drugstore, and today someone came in to buy bandages for a woman who’s burned her hand. So when I saw you, well, I guessed.”
They both laughed.
