4 . Dave Wardell’s breath came thick and fast as he struggled to keep up. In the dark alley ahead, he could make out the shape of the fleeing suspect(嫌疑人),with his police dog, Finn. The 16-year-old boy they were chasing was suspected of armed robbery, but Dave wasn’t too worried. He and Finn had been in similar situations dozens of times, and they knew exactly what to do. They were a brilliant team. Police dogs like Finn follow a lengthy training program, learning skills such as how to trace a suspect’s scent(气味)for up to four miles and how to chase and catch a suspect. In seven years, Finn had helped bring more than 200 criminals. He was brave, bold and curious, and would do anything to protect his master.
Dave thought that night would be no different. Up ahead, he saw the suspect throw himself over a fence. Finn was on him in a second, pulling him back down. In a moment of absolute horror, Dave saw him pull a long piece of bloody metal from Finn’s chest, Dave realized it was a 10-inch hunting knife. Finn was in pain, but didn’t let go of the boy’s leg.
Dave just had time to hit an emergency button on his radio. The suspect, on the fence, pulled the knife up high and aimed at Dave’s neck. In an instant, Finn jumped between them, and the knife came crashing down on Finn’s head and Dave’s hand. Straight away, Finn got hold of the boy again. Dave caught the attacker and threw him on the ground so he let go of the knife.
In time, officers surrounded the attacker, pinning him to the floor. Dave gave Finn the signal to let go, and only then did Finn drop his head to the ground.

5 . I was sitting in an airport when a woman behind me asked, “What's the best gift you’ve ever got?” I closed the magazine I'd paid too much for and listened for an answer. “What do you mean, like the best birthday present?” a young man said, “Probably the gold coin I got for graduation.”
I threw my magazine onto a neighboring chair and thought about the question. What’s the best gift I’ve ever got? Good health aside, when it comes to material objects, for me the answer is easy. It was a high school graduation present, gift-wrapped and hand-delivered by my grandfather. He handed it to me and said, “Stay close to the land. Don’t be afraid to dig in and get a little dirt on you.”
That fall, I went off to college and that shiny new green-handled spade with the silver blade (刀刃)hung untouched on the wall in my parents, garage. A few years later, I had my own family and that graduation spade made its way from my folks5 garage into my own. I dug gardens, planted trees, roses and bushes. The spade was nothing but a tool.
The years rolled by. The spade has lost some of its color and I've added some gray, but I still dig hard into the earth, more often than ever. It’s more than a trusted workout partner. It’s a reminder of my family, one proudly rooted in agriculture. It’s a useful tool with a memorable message about staying close to the earth. Priceless!
A few months from now, my daughter will finish graduate school, and she has already had a job waiting in another city. She’s knowledge-rich but cash-poor, and though she’s expecting nothing from me, I have something valuable to give her before she moves away. It'll be wrapped of course, and it'll be worth the weight in gold.

8 . Over the years, the small Vermilion Heritage Museum in Alberta, Canada, tried everything in its power to unlock an old safe (保险箱) in its basement: The museum hired blacksmiths, called the manufacturer, contacted former employees and challenged visitors to play around with the safe but nobody had any success.
Until last month, when a visitor to Vermilion cracked the code (密码) on his first try, much to the astonishment of everyone present.
Stephen Mills, from Fort McMurray, Alberta, was on a family camping trip with his wife and his two children. After giving the Mills' family a tour of the whole building, the museum volunteer showed them the objects in the basement, including the mysterious safe.
It originally had belonged to the town's Brunswick Hotel which opened in the early 1900s. When the hotel shut down in the late 1970s, the safe was locked: —and so it had remained.
“It was like a time capsule, nobody had any idea of what was in there,” said Mills.
Like other visitors, Mills was offered the chance to take a crack at opening it.
“Just like you see in the movies,” he said, “I looked at the dial and I saw the numbers were running from 0 to 60. So I thought in my head 20-40-60. I did a particular combination which is three on the right, two on the left, and one on the right, tried the handle … and it opened!””
“It was a 100% guess.” he said. “I was fully amazed. I stepped back a lttle bit and thought,
“I'm buying a lottery ticket tonight!””
The contents of the safe proved a little disappointing.
“Unfortunately, there wasn't what we thought was there,” Mills said. “Some papers, old checks, a waitress' notebook, and a receipt from the hotel. That's it.”
Nonetheless, Mills said everyone was excited about the lucky guess. “My children kept screaming “We beat the code! We beat the code!” he said.

At lunch in the first day of my high school, I saw a girl sit alone. I decided to sit with her and we had pleasant chat. Late, we became close friends in the following three years. One day, he shared something touching with me. "Do you remember the day when you come over and sat next to me, wearing a big smile?" she asked me. "I wanted you to know how much special you were. I was disappointing at that time, but your smile made my day," she added.
I can't help smile each time I think of the scene, that shows me that a simple act of kindness can change lives greatly.
10 . It’s not common that a grandmother aged 89 is crowned Queen of Icebergs in north America, but when it does happen it’s quite the sight.
On a recent trip to Iceland, Judith Streng became that grandma after her son attempted to take a photograph of her sitting on an ice structure that looks like a throne (宝座) at Diamond Beach in Jokul. Shortly after Streng sat down to pose, the piece of ice broke off and floated into the water.
“I thought it was safe. One girl had been on it and then two girls at the same time, and it was very secure with them. When I got on it, it started to shake and a wave was coming in. A very large wave came in and made the throne kind of shake, and I could tell that I was slipping off,” Streng told ABC News.
Streng’s story went hot after her 24-year-old granddaughter Catherine tweeted a text message exchange she had with her father about the incident. “My grandmother almost got lost at sea in Iceland today!”
Catherine, who teaches English in Seoul, South Korea, explained via Twitter that her father described the scene vividly. He has a PhD in English, and described the event in the following words, “She climbed to the throne after a wave had pulled back and left it briefly exposed on the beach. Then a wave washed in and removed the ice throne, rocking it from side to side. When the wave left, it lifted the throne and carried her out into the sea with the tide.”
Luckily for the Streng family, Randy, a licensed boat captain from Florida with knowledge of water rescue strategies witnessed the whole thing, and was able to save the day.
