1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Almost all of my holidays were spent with my grandpa. My grandpa was a retired army officer and the years in the army had made him a very tough person, which helped him a lot in fighting with cancer for a long time. Silver and golden stars on his shoulders and medals on his chest in grandma’s old photo albums reflected the marks of his distinguished service and numerous adventures. Grandpa had fine qualities and was a real personality. He was strict with his family, me included, as well as himself.

In our ancestral house there was a big pond as was common in bygone Bengali homes with lots of trees and bushes. Both my grandparents were fond of our so-called garden. One morning our new neighbor saw my grandpa planting two trees on both sides of our main gate, which still stand tall today. Across the street our new neighbor also got the same kind of tree and planted the trees exactly on both sides of his gate too.

My grandpa didn’t often give enough amount of water to his plants and didn’t always give his full attention to them, while our neighbor gave a lot of water to his plants and looked after them too well. My grandpa’s plants were simple but looked good. But our neighbor’s plants were much fuller and greener.

Normally, during April and May, we have short but violent thunderstorms called “Kalboishakhi”. One late evening during a Kalboishakhi we had showers with strong winds, which continued right throughout that night. Next morning along with my grandparents I came out to inspect the damage to our garden. I saw our neighbor was there in his garden too, but looked upset as his plants were uprooted. But, our plants were not damaged and were standing firm on the ground.

2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I needed to do something in my community (社区) in order to complete the community service hours required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did, too. It seemed like a good thing to do.

I thought that we would just be passing out dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began serving dinner.

As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I’d come face to face with the homeless: How should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of the people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous. I didn’t have too much time to worry about it. I was assigned (分配) to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she’d be right there, which I found quite comforting.

I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had tally given up on life, while others seemed to be making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn’t have a place to call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成-一个完整的短文。

Our Garden and the Salad

“Christine, come and help me in the garden. I want to plant all of the seeds today.” My father was calling to me. “I'm busy...” I said. I didn't understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.

By the end of April, his plants had come up in neat rows. Unfortunately, in early May, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He was in hospital for about two months and during that time he often asked me about his garden. Even after he came home, he had to stay in bed for a while.

My mother had several business trips so I said that I would take care of his garden. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often so I didn't think much about the garden.

One Saturday morning in July, my father said to me, “Christine, I think that the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let's have a salad today!” I took a bowl and went out to the garden. I looked at the leaves and was upset to see that many of the leaves had been half eaten. There were hundreds of bugs (虫子) all over them! I tried to get them off, but there were just too many. I looked at the carrots next, but they didn't look healthy.

I got in panic for a moment, but then thought of a good idea. I quietly went to the nearest store to buy some vegetables. I went back home and cut them up to make a salad for my father. When I gave it to him, he said, “Oh, Christine, what a beautiful salad! You must be taking very good care of my garden.” My father looked happy, but I felt a little bit guilty.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者在绘画班认识了退休来学画画的George,他们成为了忘年交。George把自己一整套心爱的绘画工具送给作者,如今每当作者看到那个装工具的红色箱子都会想起George。

5 . I was in my early 30s, seeking a creative outlet (出口) unrelated to boring housework and raising little kids. At 65, George had recently retired and was seeking a rewarding hobby for his golden years. For both of us, painting was “it” and we met at a local painting class. Thus we began a friendship that was to last for 25 years -until the day he died.

George took to painting with an awe-inspiring level of passion and commitment, even changing the spare bedroom of his home into a studio. How I envied him, as in my own home I had neither the space nor the funds for such a luxury. His painting equipment was comprehensive. George housed many of these items in a tool box-a red metal tool box. For about six years George and I studied together through various units until the completion of the course.

Fast-forward some years and George was about 80 years old. One day, he told me that he was giving up painting and giving away all his “stuff”. “I can’t paint. I don’t know why I ever thought I could,” he declared. He was mistaken about his painting ability because he had turned out some unique and wonderful works. However George had decided he was through with painting, and no amount of talking could persuade him otherwise.

And so that was why George bequeathed all his painting equipment to me. “You have the best talent and are most likely to use it,” he said.

I still use much of his equipment today. As I paint, I often remember George, his big personality, generous spirit and unfailing encouragement. The most treasured item is the red tool box, still in good shape. The original shop sticker is still firmly in place although the price has long since worn off. But that’s all right because to my mind some things, like friendship, are beyond price.

1. Why did the author envy George?
A.He had a talent for painting.B.He could afford a home studio.
C.He lived a life of luxury.D.He had a good personality.
2. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.George once created some fine paintings.
B.George didn’t like his painting equipment.
C.George always wanted to give up painting.
D.George misunderstood the author’s painting ability.
3. What does the underlined word “bequeathed” probably mean?
A.Described.B.Rewarded.C.Left.D.Lent.
4. What is the best title of this passage?
A.A Lesson from My Old Friend.
B.Inspiration for Art from My Partner.
C.Nice George: An Artist with Great Passion.
D.A Red Tool Box: A Bond Between Two Friends.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了周六,作者找不到女儿Evie,女儿不接电话,这让作者非常担心。但最后女儿打来电话报告行踪,作者却没有提到自己有多担心她。

7 . If you’re like me, patience is a virtue that doesn’t come without effort. It takes a lot of practice, and I’m devoting a year to the pursuit. Patience is my word for 2022. Maybe you’ re still trying to settle on yours, and I’d love to hear about it.

I picked patience one Saturday after my daughter Evie had pressed the “Can I call you later?” auto reply instead of answering her cell phone. Twice. I’d waited a couple hours in between calls, and that was after having texted her first thing that morning just to say hi. Worry built while I cleaned the fish tank, slightly admiring the simple aquatic life.

Evie was a college student, living off campus with three roommates. They looked out for one another, all were smart and careful, and I had no reason to think Evie was in real trouble. But maybe she’d had a spat with one of her friends or was running low on money. Maybe she was drowning in schoolwork. I imagined a million what-ifs. Weren’t cell phones made to put a parent’s mind at ease? Evie was going to get a mouthful when she finally found a free minute to tell me that I didn’t need to worry.

I filled the aquarium with fresh water, and my impatience reached the top as well. The fish swam laps in the crystal-clear tank. I wished I were more like these peaceful angels living in the moment. Evie finally called late that night. She was at a party but wanted to catch me before I went to bed. “Sorry, Mom. Today was so busy and great!” I told her that was just what I had imagined. I didn’t mention that I was practicing a whole new way to wait.

1. Why did the author become worried at the beginning?
A.Evie’s roommates treated her unkindly.B.Evie forgot to say hello to her as usual.
C.Something went wrong with her fish.D.She couldn’t reach Evie on the phone.
2. What does the underlined phrase “had a spat” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Chatted.B.Shopped.C.Quarreled.D.Played.
3. What do we know about Evie?
A.She spent that Saturday with her friends.B.She lived with her classmates in the dorm.
C.She failed to ring back her mom in the end.D.She had trouble returning to school timely.
4. What’s the text mainly about?
A.A college student’s busy academic life.B.The importance of patience in daily life.
C.The author’s favorite word for 2022.D.A mother’s deep love for her daughter.

I was jogging in a park yesterday while I caught sight of a handbag on a bench. Obviously, someone had left it there careless. I opened the handbag to see what was inside. I found a wallet, some keys and a notebook in it. Luckily, there was a telephone number in notebook. I immediately dial the number and a lady answered the call. On hearing that I said, she told me she would come back at once. Ten minute later, she arrived by taxi. Having been confirmed she was the owner, I gave the handbag back for her. The owner expressed his gratitude to me repeatedly. I felt very delighting.

9 . Many of us have dreams of being our own boss and starting our own businesses, and one woman has been able to make her dreams a reality with the help of a complete change of lifestyle.

Catherine White, 46, spent her teenage years washing cars in order to make ends meet and now she owns a £20 million business empire. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, she said, “My childhood was so unstable, so I always wanted and needed to be independent. I didn’t believe working for someone else gave me that and my future would still rely on someone else.”

At 24, Catherine started her first business from a desk in her sister’s art school but she was struggling with a panic disorder at the time and would find comfort in junk food, which led her to follow an unhealthy lifestyle. And the business mogul (大亨) believes changing her lifestyle also helped her succeed in her career as she is no longer scared of making decisions or speaking in public.

This year, Catherine aims to grow one of the companies under her Freedom Services Group umbrella, Stella Insurance. She set it up in Australia for women. With each deal, the business donates $5 to a charity, and plans are underway to launch in the UK.
