This sweet baby girl will never feel fearful again, and won’t ever be abandoned again.” After winning hearts at Sandy’s office, CiCi has been approved for adopting and will soon leave for her new life.

2 . Jayce Crowder began noticing when he was in kindergarten that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. He had one. It started when one boy teased him, says his mother, Cortney Lewis. He’d return home with questions: Why am I different? Why me? Why? How could she provide answers to her son’s questions when she had never found those answers herself?

A few weeks later, Lewis came home from her work and turned on the TV to a news story about a six-foot-three eighth grader from Washington, Iowa. Trashaun Willis, then 14, had become an Internet sensation after posting videos of his slam dunks (扣篮), and, like Jayce, he was missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in. He was interested, watching dunk after dunk.

Later the boys met at Washington Middle School several months later, and immediately bonded. They rode bikes, took photos, played hide-and-seek, and shot baskets. Trashaun taught Jayce to finish (上篮) with a high release and put some backspin on the ball. He even gave Jayce a shirt that says “Ten fingers are overrated.” At one point, Trashaun did get serious with Jayce. He talked about their left arms. He said not to let anyone pull him down and that words don’t need to shake his confidence.

Since that meeting, Lewis has seen a pronounced difference in her son, who is now in Grade Two. He recently started wrestling and loves it. Lewis points to Trashaun’s influence. She said this made Jayce “understand that there are others like him.”

As for Trashaun, his relationship with Jayce made him look forward to helping more kids, perhaps as a youth coach with NubAbility, a nonprofit devoted to coaching kids with limb differences.

1. According to Lewis, she didn’t know ________.
A.where Jayce was differentB.how to comfort Jayce suitably
C.what happened to Jayce at schoolD.why Jayce asked strange questions
2. Why did Trashaun give Jayce a shirt with some words?

C.To help him fight against bullying.D.To inspire him to be a basketball player.
3. How did Jayce feel after meeting Trashaun?
A.Confused.B.Ashamed.C.Inspired.D.Challenged.
4. What does the underlined word “pronounced” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Small.B.Mysterious.C.Strange.D.Clear.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者热爱写作,但是苦于缺少时间而陷入焦虑。她的导师开导她要抓住点点滴滴的闲暇,兼顾生活和写作。

3 . Because my stories keep my heart pounding at night with the possibility of it all, when I can’t get words on paper, I want to scream. All my energy pools at the bottom of my heart, where it continues to yell at me all day long, “Write! Write! Write!” I have to quiet the voice like a hidden pet, shushing (发嘘声) it over and over until I get the chance to leave, laptop in hand, stories pouring out of my mind.

What poor, unfortunate lives we artists live! We’re tortured by our words, whether they’re circling around in our minds at 3 am or written on paper, looking sad and regretful that we’ve put them there. Our words laugh at us before and after they leave our bodies.

I messaged a writing mentor (导师) when I found myself running in circles. With only a small window of time to myself each afternoon, I found it hard to write. If only I had more time, I could finish my book. If only people would leave me alone, I could become an accomplished writer. It was everyone else’s fault.

Small — my mentor told me to start small but keep going. “Do what you can, when you can. Let that be enough during the busy seasons.” In her eyes, she was once me. She was once crazy with tasks that kept her hands pushing, pulling, grabbing and moving endlessly. She recognized herself in the way I talked with starry eyes about my dreamy writing goals and plans. Essays, articles and short stories flowered in my rich mind.

In a few wise words, she gave me the freedom to write in small periods of time she called “the cracks of the day”. She argued that I should run after publishing with the same desire as ever. But in her patient voice, I heard a gentle reminder of stopping running so hard and instead slowing to a sustainable pace.

So I write. I submit. I live, and I dream.

1. What can we infer about the author from the first paragraph?
A.She has a strong desire to write.B.She has serious heart problems.
C.She is forced to write constantly.D.She is unable to focus on writing.
2. What does the underlined word “tortured” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Threatened.B.Troubled.C.Inspired.D.Impressed.
3. What problem did the author have in writing?
A.She suffered from a serious lack of time.
B.Her writing was far from satisfying.
C.She had no idea what to write.
D.She has no one to rely on.
4. Which of the following can sum up the writing mentor’s suggestion to the author?
A.All roads lead to Rome.B.Strike while the iron is hot.
C.No pains, no gains.D.Constant drops wear away a stone.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了自幼无家可归的Liz辗转多所学校,饱受同学的嘲笑和轻视,最终在个人的努力和老师的帮助下成功考入哈佛大学的故事。

4 . By the time she turned 18, Liz had attended twelve schools in as many years. She had lived in shelters and in parks but never in a permanent residence for more than a few months. She had been laughed at by students at a dozen schools who considered her “different”.

Homeless since early childhood, Liz struggled all her life to hide her circumstances from teachers and fellow students. However, academics proved to be a way for her to find confidence in herself again. For instance, at the age of 9, she placed in the 99th percentile on a state exam, and her teacher Oprah told her she was “gifted”. From that moment forward, Liz decided to do whatever it took to keep herself in that category. “I was so proud of being smart and I never wanted people to say, ‘You got the easy way out because you’re homeless, ‘” she said“ I never saw it as an excuse. ”

By the second year of high school, she realized that she could not succeed in getting the education she dreamed of without getting help to go beyond what her current school could offer. She talked to teachers who helped her apply for summer community college classes and scholarships. And in 11th grade, when she enrolled at Jefferson High School, she decided to complete the rest of her school career there—a decision that meant taking a bus each morning at 4 a. m. and not getting home until 11 p.m.

Her perseverance and hard work paid off, however. When she poured the story of her life into her Harvard University college application, she was accepted.

Once Liz felt ready to tell her story, it won her notice not only from college admissions boards but also from the news media. Now as a successful student at Harvard, Liz continues to use the lessons of her extraordinary life to help and inspire other students.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述的是作者一家曾经救下了一只小鹅,随着小鹅的长大,他离开了作者的家。多年后,小鹅变成了大鹅又回到了作者的家。

6 . In 2000, all my family were coming back from a T-ball game. Unlike every other weekend, a surprise was waiting for us in our driveway—two adult geese and a small goose. Obviously startled by our return, the adults flew away in panic, with their baby left behind.

Hours passed before night eventually fell. It was apparent that the small goose needed protection, warmth and food to make it to the morning. We brought him to our backyard. Each morning, we would try to drive the small goose away to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn’t go to them, though, and neither would they come close enough to take him back. Realizing the young goose had clearly decided we were his family by then, we gave him a name, calling the little guy Peeper.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. Before we knew it, the little creature had grown into a big bird with two powerful wings. One day, when my dad threw Peeper into the air, he just flew away and didn’t come back. With night falling, all of us became increasingly worried. We looked for him, called his name and anxiously expected his return. But he never appeared again. It took a long time before we accepted the fact that he was missing. We could only pray he found his parents and went off on his natural way.

I was thrilled to see when, in 2019, an adult goose made his way back to my family home. He did all of the same things Peeper used to do! Much to my amazement, he even responded to the name Peeper. It became clear to me that my old best friend had returned many years later.

This experience has been as meaningful to me as anything in my life. Looking beyond our reach high in the sky, birds have feelings like human beings, so do many other living things. We human beings should learn to get along with them. We need each other’s care and protection for a better world.

1. Which word can replace “startled” in Paragraph 1?
A.scared.B.confused.C.impressed.D.surprised.
2. Why does the author give the goose a name Peeper?
A.Because the small goose was abandoned by its parents.
B.Because the author considered it to be his best friend.
C.Because the small goose regarded the author’s family as family members.
D.Because the adult goose went back several years later and recognized the author.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards the comeback of the goose?
A.Calm and indifferent.B.Surprised and delighted.
C.Hopeful and determined.D.Concerned and sympathetic.
4. What does the author intend to do by writing this passage?
A.To call for people’s love for geese.
B.To share a story between a goose and his family.
C.To raise people’s awareness of environmental protection.
D.To remind readers to live in harmony with wild animals.

7 . Mack Rutherford, a 17-year -old pilot has become the youngest person to fly alone around the world. He landed his small plane in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia on Wednesday. That is also where he started his trip five months ago.

His trip, which started in Sofia on a plane owned by the Internet company ICDSoft on March 23, took Rutherford through 52 countries across five continents. The plane, called Shark, can travel at the speed of 300 kilometers per hour. Normally a two-seater, the plane was changed for his long trip by replacing the second seat with an extra fuel container (容器).

Rutherford first planned to make the trip in three months. But it lasted longer because of several barriers, including rainstorms, sandstorms and extreme heat. Most of the delays were caused by waits to get permits and other documents required for keeping with the flight plan.

From there, he headed to Alaska and down the West Coast of the United States to Mexico.

On Wednesday, a huge crowd of people welcomed Rutherford. His father, Sam Rutherford, told reporters that such an event helps show other children they should follow their dreams.

“Mommy, I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up.”

Later that day she went to the fire department, where she met Fireman Bob. She explained her son’s final wish and asked if it might be possible to give her six-year-old son a ride around the block on a fire engine. Fireman Bob said, “Look, we can do better than that. We’ll make him an honorary fireman for the whole day. He can come down to the fire station, eat with us, go out on all the fire calls, the whole nine yards! And, we’ll get a real fire uniform made for him.”

Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Bopsy, dressed him in his fire uniform and escorted (护送) him from his hospital bed to the waiting hook and ladder truck. Bopsy was in heaven. And will you open the window to his room?”

About five minutes later a hook and ladder truck arrived at the hospital, extended its ladder up to Bopsy’s third floor open window and 14 firemen and two fire-women climbed up the ladder into Bopsy’s room.
