Freedom and Jeff

Freedom and I have been together 10 years this summer. She came in as a baby in 2011 with two     1     (break) wings, thin and dirty. We made the decision to give her a chance at life, so I took her to the vet's office. From then on, I was always around her. We had her in a huge dog carrier with the top off, and it was loaded up with shredded newspaper for her to lay in. I used to sit and talk to her, urging her to live, to fight and she would lay there looking at me with those big brown eyes. We also had to tube feed her for weeks. This went on for 4-6 weeks, and by then she still couldn't stand. It got to the point     2     the decision was made to euthanize (安乐死) her if she couldn't stand in a week.

She was going to be put down that Friday, and I was supposed to come in on that Thursday afternoon. I didn't want to go to the center that Thursday,     3     I couldn't bear the thought of her being euthanized, but I went anyway and when I walked in everyone was grinning from ear to ear. I went immediately back to her cage; and there she was, standing on her own, a big beautiful eagle. She was ready to live. I was just about in tears by then. That was a very good day. We knew she could never fly, so the director asked me to glove train her.

In the spring of 2013, I was diagnosed     4     non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (淋巴瘤). I had stage 3, which is not good, so I wound up doing eight months of chemo (化疗). Lost the hair- the whole bit. I missed a lot of work.     5     I felt good enough, I would go to Sarvey and take Freedom out for walks. Freedom would also come to me in my dreams and help me fight the cancer. This happened time and time again.

Fast forward to November 2013, I went in for my last checkup. I was told that if the cancer was not all gone after eight rounds of chemo, then my last option was     6     stem cell transplant. I went in Monday, and 1 was told that all the cancer was gone. Amazing!

So the first thing I did was     7     (get) up to Sarvey and take the big girl out for a walk. It was misty and cold. I went to her flight, and we went out front to the top of the hill. I hadn’t said a word to Freedom, but somehow she knew. She looked at me and wrapped both her wings around me to where I could feel them     8     (press) in on my back, and she touched my nose with her mouth and     9     (stare) into my eyes, and we just stood there like that for I didn't know how long. That was a magic moment. We     10     (be) soulmates since she came in. This is a very special bird.

Jim is an 8-year-old boy. One day, when he went to the countryside     1     his parents, he caught a beautiful bird in the woods.     2     his father tried very hard to persuade him to let it go, Jim still decided     3    (keep) it.

After     4    (come) back from the countryside, Jim bought     5     beautiful cage and kept the little bird in it. In order to make the bird happy, he fed it with nice food. He thought the bird lived     6    (happy) with him because it didn’t have to try find food.     7    , the bird didn’t look happy. It always looked out of the cage, staring at the sky. And it never sang.

One day, his father said to him, “You should let the bird go now. It would be much     8    (good) for it to live in the woods than here. If you continue to keep it, it may die.” But Jim didn’t follow his father’s     9    (suggest). The bird was still kept in the cage.

One morning, when Jim went to play with the bird as usual, he found that the bird     10    (die). Jim was very sad and regretted not letting it go. But it was too late.

One morning, I was waiting at the bus stop, worried about being late for school. There were many people     1     (wait) at the bus stop, and some of them looked very anxious and     2     (disappoint).When the bus finally came, we all hurried on board. I got a place next to the window,     3     I had a good view of the sidewalk. A boy on a bike     4     (catch) my attention. He was riding beside the bus and waving his arms. He was carrying something over his shoulder and shouting. Finally, when we came to the next stop, the boy came up to the door of the bus, and I heard     7     exciting conversation. Then the driver stood up and asked, “Did anyone lose a suitcase at the last stop?” A woman on the bus shouted, “Oh dear! It’s     8    .”   She pushed her way to the driver and took the suitcase     9     (thankful). Everyone on the bus began talking about what the boy     10     (do), and the crowd of strangers suddenly became friendly to one another.

Here is a story about an old wise man. One day, the wise man was on his way to teach a village. In the village people were very       1     (interest) in his ideas. Each person in the village had prepared well, thinking about       2     question he or she might ask the wise man.

The wise man finally arrived and went into a large room       3     people asked their questions. There was great expectation and       4     (excite).

The wise man walked silently around the room and sang a sweet and soft song. One by one, people     5     (take) up the song. Soon everyone was singing along with the wise man. As people became       6     (comfort) with his song, the wise man started to dance       7     the music. He danced everywhere in the room, and one by one, people danced with him. Soon everyone in the whole village was dancing       8     (wild) together.

I was very frightened when    1    (wake)up in hospital last Thursday. I fainted in my PE class because of low blood sugar levels. Fortunately, I was rushed to hospital    2    (immediate). The doctor helped me and I made a full recovery within two days. My experience proves what a bad idea    3    is to try to lose weight by skipping meals. Now I know this extreme weight-loss method has serious side    4    (effect). Now I also understand that being healthy and    5    (energy)is more important than being slim.

From now    6     , I will pay more attention to my health rather than my weight. I will eat a    7    (balance)diet to make sure I have enough nutrition. Exercising regularly is also    8    important part of a healthy lifestyle. My doctor tells me that it will help me concentrate better in class. So, I    9    (play)sport with my friends every other day after school,     10    I hope can help me get into shape.

After I graduated from college I struggled to find work. I applied everywhere but no one was interested in hiring me. Finally I found a job in a group home for disabled adults. We were responsible for the feeding , dressing and safety of them. We     1    (keep) them on a schedule and helped them control their behaviors. It was a     2    (challenge) job emotionally.

One of our     3    (patient) was a young man who could not talk and would often walk out. He did enjoy walking outside, so the other workers often told me that I should take him for     4    walking. I suddenly felt my fingers     5    (touch) by something. The young man was trying     6    (hold) my hand. Instead of pushing it away I took his hand in     7    (my). I saw there was a light shining     8     his eyes. They were full of love, joy     9     goodness. At that moment I saw who he     10    (real) was.

The disabled can teach us so much in life. They can show us that love and kindness are the essential parts of us human beings. Do not ignore the lessons they teach.

One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugar loaf Mountain in Maine. One of his dream     1     (career) is to become an astronaut. Early in the afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally left the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! Not     2     (have) food, water, a phone, or other supplies, he felt rather     3     (anxiety) and was getting colder and colder by the minute.

Nicholas didn’t know the spot     4     he was staying. He tried not to panic regardless     5     the terrible situation. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV.

There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put (待在原地) . Using his skis, Nicholas was able to build a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and had a hole     6     (dig) in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him.

Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for a TV program. He used to watch Grylls’ survival show Man vs Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode (一期节目) of Man vs Wild,     7     is in a wild area that Grylls is abandoned and has to find his way out.

According to Grylls’ own     8     (interpret) on Nicholas’ survival, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone else how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive. Nicholas was     9     (genuine) thankful for Grylls’ show and said, “From seven to eight o’clock tomorrow, I     10     (watch) Grylls’ survival show again.”

Thirty years ago, an elderly Canadian couple undertook a unique project with the purpose of     1     (help) Canadians have a better understanding of China based on how the Chinese view themselves and the issues they face.

Their efforts resulted     2     the birth of a 1985 book, Understanding China Through Cartoons. Now I have become a senior secondary student and this means I have    1    opportunity to become a different person, a much    2    (good)one! I’ve decided    3    (set)new goals for myself. The last year of my junior secondary school was definitely tough! The exams were very stressful and it is good they were all over.

In our class, every student has more than two avatars, which are images used as digital identities online. There are a wide    4    (various) of forms and use of avatars among our classmates. Most students choose avatars from a selection    5    ready-made images, but some students design avatars in their own images. More than half of the students want to show different    6    (aspect) of their personalities through their avatars.

One day, my two brothers and I were coming back from the islands    7    we often risked going and got more fish    8    others. All at once, the sky was covered with dark clouds and in less than a minute we were in a terrible storm. a huge wave covered our boat and my younger brother    9    (fall) into the sea. My elder brother put his mouth close to my ear and cried out “Moskoe-strom!” The moment I heard the word I became very    10     (frighten). I knew what he meant by that one word well enough.
