The ancient town of Fenghuang is a place with beautiful village life in rural China. Having travelled directly from the busy city, I regard Fenghuang as a better     1     (choose) to have a breath of the fresh air.

When I paid     2     visit to Fenghuang, it was July. My friend and I     3    (excited) explored, walking along the ancient wall and crossing the beautiful, old bridges. People there were very     4    (relax). They were neither troubled by the hot weather nor by the tourists, walking, eating and playing outdoors.     5     the first evening we bought spicy, cold noodles and ate on the riverbank as we watched the sunset.

We stayed in a small hotel     6     was similar to many of the traditional     7     (building) in the village. Our room was built on high stilts(桩子) over the banks of the river. From our window we could hear the rush of the water and the sounds of of excited tourists     8     (travel) in small boats downstream. We saw people at work busy catching fish and young children playing in shallow waters.

Although there     9     (be) many visitors to Fenghuang, we did not see any other foreigner during our stay. After several days, I was still unwilling     10    ( leave).

One morning, I was waiting at the bus stop, worried about     1     (be) late for school. There were many people waiting at the bus stop,     2     some of them looked very anxious and     3    (disappoint) . When the bus finally came, we all hurried on board. I got a place next     4     the window, so I had a good view of the sidewalk. A boy on a bike     5     (catch ) my attention. He was riding beside the bus and waving his arms. I heard a passenger behind me shouting to the driver, but he refused     6     (stop) until we reached the next stop. Still, the boy kept     7    (ride). He was carrying something over his shoulder and shouting. Finally, when we came to the next stop, the boy ran up the door of the bus. I heard an excited conversation. Then the driver stood up and asked,“    8     anyone lose a suitcase at the last stop?” A woman on the bus shouted, “Oh, dear! It s     9     (I )”. She pushed her way to the driver and took the suitcase thankfully, Five others on the bus began talking about what the boy had done and the crowd of strangers         10    (sudden) became friendly to one another.

I was on my way to my parents' home by motorcycle and saw a middle-aged man     1    (carry) a heavy bag on his shoulders and walking     2     great struggle. I passed him and then paused. I turned around and decided     3    (offer) him a ride. He lifted the heavy bag with a lot of iron and sat on the back seat of my motorcycle     4    (immediate). Then he asked my name. After I told him, he called my name aloud and then thanked me. We rode on. In five minutes, we     5    (stop) by a traffic policeman who demanded to see my license. There were many traffic policemen     6     were stopping everyone on that road. We had to get off, put the middle-aged man's bag down     7     then gave my license to the policeman. After that, we continued our way. Finally, we reached the man's destination. He got off and thanked me again. After     8    (reach) home, when I     9    (park) my motorcycle I saw that the iron pieces in his bag had made deep     10    (mark) and almost torn the seat in a couple of places.

I smiled and took it as a reminder he had left behind so that I wouldn't forget what the seat was for.

Once there lived a rich man    1    wanted to do something for the people of his town. But first he wanted     2     (find ) out whether they deserved his help.

In the centre of the main road into the town, he placed    3     very large stone. Then he     4    (bury) himself behind a tree and waited. Soon an old man came along with his cow.

“Who put this stone in the centre of the road?”   said the old man,but he did not try to remove the stone. Instead , with some difficulty he passed around the stone     5       (slow) and continued on his way. Another man came along and did the same thing ; then another came, and another .   All of them complained about the stone but not tried to remove    6    . Late in the afternoon a young man came along . He saw the stone,    7    (say) to   himself ,”The night will be very dark. Some    8    (neighbor) will come along later in the dark and will fall against the stone.”

Then he began to move the stone. He pushed with all his    9    (strong) to move it. How great his surprise was at last! He found a bag of money    10     the stone ,.
