Jack,     1     was a ten-year- old boy, didn’t like doing any work. He had to go to school, of course, but he didn’t study hard there and tried     2     (do) little work. His father and mother were both doctors and they     3     (hope) that their son would become a doctor, too, when he     4     (grow) up.

But one day Jack said     5     (happy) to his mother, “When I finish school, I want to be a     6     (clean).” “What?” his mother asked,     7     (feel) very surprised. “That’s not a good job. Why do you want to do the job?” his mother said. “     8     I would only need to work one day a week,” Jack answered at once. “Only one day a week?” his mother said. “What do you mean? And how do you know about it?” “Well,” Jack answered, “I know that the cleaners come to work     9     Thursday every week, because I only see     10     (they) that day.” And then his mother laughed and said, “But the cleaners go to work in other streets on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.”

One day, I took a bus to downtown as usual.     1     I got on the bus, I took a seat and started reading a newspaper just as I often did. No one spoke on the bus. Although we might see the same faces every day, we     2     (prefer) hiding behind our newspapers     3     talking to people around us.

However, that day was different. While I was reading some news, the woman     4     (sit) next to me said, “Excuse me, Miss.” I was surprised and ran into     5     (confuse). After putting down the newspaper, I saw     6     smiling face. “Are you talking to me?” I asked. She nodded, still smiling. When I looked around, I found some other people were talking. “That’s strange,” I said to     7     (me).

Later, I found out the reason. The passengers     8     (ask) to put their newspapers down and talk to each other by the bus driver. After I knew it, I started talking with the woman     9     (happy).

I had always been glad     10     (talk) with others on the bus. But since no one did that, I had to be quiet, too. Now I could finally talk with others on the bus and it made my trip much more pleasant.

A man got lost while driving through a country. As he tried to read a map, he drove off the road into a ditch (沟渠)     1     (lucky). Though he was not injured, his car was stuck deep     2     the mud. So the man had got to walk to     3     nearby farm to ask for help.

“Warwick can get your car out of that ditch,” said the farmer,       4     (point) to an old mule (骡子). The man looked at the weak mule and the farmer     5     just stood there repeating, “Yep, old Warwick can do the job.” The man thought he had nothing     6     (lose). Therefore, he took the old man and Warwick to the ditch.

The farmer hitched (套住) the mule to the car and     7     (shout), “Pull, Fred! Pull, Jack! Pull, Ted! Pull, Warwick!” And the mule pulled the car from the ditch with very little effort.

The man was     8     (amaze). He thanked the farmer and asked, “Why did you call out all of those other     9     (name) before you call Warwick?”

The farmer smiled and said, “Old Warwick is just about blind. Once he     10     (believe) he is part of a team, he won’t mind pulling.”

Mr. Harris used to work in Dover, but then he changed his workplace, and he and his wife moved to another city in America. They soon met a lot of interesting people, and after a few weeks, they •often went to dinners or to parties at other people’s houses. The     1     (relate) between them was perfect.

Then Mrs. Harris said to her husband, “We’ve been to a lot of other people’s houses and they are very generous so now we must invite them to our house.” “Yes, certainly,” answered her husband, “A big party will be the easiest thing.” So Mrs. Harris said, “Yes, I’ll invite all our friends here to a big party on 5th July, a day     2     we will be free.” Mrs. Harris was beginning to write the invitations when her husband found that she was writing, “Party: 6:30 to 8:30 p. m.”

“Let me make     3     comment about it. You had better not     4     (write) in that way,” he said. “You’re telling our guests that they must leave at 8:30.” So Mrs. Harris just wrote, “Party: 6:30 p. m.” Then they bought     5     (sufficiency) foods, drinks and fruits. In a few days, their guests     6     (arrive) at their home.

Soon the day came and a lot of guests came. They all had a good time, so they did not want to go home at 8:30 p. m. All of them were fond of the sculpture     7     (carve) from a piece of wood. While     8     (stay) there at midnight, they heard the doorbell ringing and a policeman arrived. He entered the apartment, only to find that there were a number of people in the room. He said, “A party is being held by you at the moment here but you must stop making a noise, because someone has complained about it.”

Mr. Harris said, “We have to do what the policeman has told us to.” To the couple’s relief, all their guests were ready to go.

When Mr. and Mrs. Harris were alone again, she mysteriously said to him, “That was a surprise. Who complained about the noise is what I was curious to know.”

“I did. It occurred     9     me that I had to call the police,” Mr. Harris answered, feeling     10     (extreme) tired.

Scientists usually have to do thousands of     1    (experiment)in order to prove something new or true. They often fail,     2     they never give up.

The grandfather and the father,     1    (seat) at the table, are playing chess. The son     2    (nervous) approaches the table and tells his father he has decided not     3    (go) to university. He wants to focus     4     his band and have a career in music when he leaves school. The father thinks     5     (play) in a band is not a job and he wants     6    (he) son to be a lawyer because he thinks people show respect for lawyers. However, his son is not interested in law. The grandfather advises his grandson to think carefully     7     he jumps in with both     8    (foot). The grandfather says if his grandson goes to university and plays music at     9     same time, he     10    (have) two options for his future.
