1 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Sometimes, making a decision is hard for adults while easy for kids. The Jackson family had been meaning to buy some new furniture (家具) for ages, but somehow they never got round to it. There were always so many other things to do. Then one day there was a big shout from the room of Jason, 12. The rest of the family ran to see what happened.

Jason’s desk had broken. There were bits of wood and pens and papers all over the floor. And in the middle was Jason! “I was just doing my homework.” he said, “and then -bang! The desk broke. Everything fell over. I was so surprised that I fell over too!” Laughed Jane, 5. “That decides it.” said Mum. “We need to buy some new furniture before anything else breaks. Jane needs a new bed. And Jason needs a desk, so that he can do his homework. ”

So that weekend, the family got up early, and set off for the big furniture store outside town. It was huge. There was so much furniture, some of it was arranged like in a real house.

“Look, I’m playing houses (过家家),” said Jane, crawling ( 爬 ) under a table. Jane loved playing houses. “That’s enough,” Mum said, taking tight hold of Jane’s hand. Jane didn’t like it, but she had to stay close. The family chose a new bed for Jane, who was bored now, and tired. She didn’t say much, while the rest of the family discussed which desk to get. Jason had found one he liked but Mum and Dad couldn’t agree.

“It’s too big.” said Mum. “There’s not enough space in his room.”

“It’s too small,” said Dad. “There’s not enough space for his homework. ”

“I think it’s just right!” said Jason.

“Let’s get a cup of tea while we try and decide,” said Mum.“There’s a cafe in the store.” Dad thought this was a good idea. He needed a sit down, he said, and Jason really wanted a milkshake (奶昔). “What do you think, Jane?” asked Mum. Then she looked round. “Where is she? I think she’s jumping on the sofa!”

But there was no sign of Jane on the sofa. Then Jason wondered if she could be lying on her new bed!

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried.

Arthur stopped and said, “It looks like you’ve got a problem.”

“I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry but I can’t start my car.”

“Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”

“No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”

The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.

It was from the bank. There had been a robbery (抢劫)!

Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.

Arthur still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into a young woman in front of him.

She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” he thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!”

Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In the spring sun, my aunt and I headed for her flower shop. Normally I would be delighted to help in her shop, but not recently because of Rosa. Rosa was my sister, just one month old, who was settled in my old bedroom. For ten years, the small room was full of my toys and books. But now it was transformed into her baby room, decorated like a garden with pinks and yellows. My space, my old life, was gone.

“Here we are!” We arrived at the shop, a wave of colour and sweet smell washing over me. My aunt said I could pick some flowers for Mum and Dad. I used to love this, but today I was so overcome with tiredness and envy. Why bother to bring them flowers when they were enjoying Rosa at home without me?

Silently I helped my aunt arrange flowers. “Your mum told me there hasn’t been much shut eye recently for any of you.” “Not much, since Rosa the alarm clock was installed (安装).” I complained with a huge yawn (哈欠).

“I remember having to creep (蹑手蹑脚地走) around like a worn-out mouse when your mum was a baby. I spent the first months hating her so much.” “But you and Mum seem so close,” I said, guiltily hiding away my envy of Rosa.

“Now we are. But it took me years to grow into the role of big sister. Few flowers blossom (绽放) overnight, you know.” She pulled me in for aside hug, glancing up at the clock, and suggested I take a walk outside.

Behind her shop was a field dotted with spring flowers. Stepping into the field, I began to pick little flowers. It was like gathering my childhood memories. I remembered how I’d sit with Dad, making flower chains, crowning (授予) each other with the silliest titles: Queen of Junk Food and King of Mess. My smile grew wider. The shining yellow flowers reminded me of the color in Rosa’s baby room. Was she awake? I wondered.

4 . 阅读下面材科,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On my fortieth birthday, I moved into my new home. In doing so, I also moved into a new neighborhood. Over the last years, I've made friends with everybody in my last neighborhood. However, I had difficulty getting on with my new next-door neighbor.

On most days, we had a friendly relationship and sometimes we were able to give each other a hand. The conflicts (冲突) came around the hunting season. I kept cows on my land and my neighbor lived by hunting. One day, my neighbor came knocking at my door, saying that he had injured a deer that then ran onto my land and asking if he could follow and finish it, and I refused. Later, I searched for the deer for several hours but found no signs of any deer.

Certainly, it caused poor relations between us. When my neighbor did kill a deer, he hung it behind his house within a few feet of my house. For days as I drove in and out, there was that deer. I knew they needed the meat; it was part of their income (收入), but the hanging deer really annoyed me. In the neighborhood I was one of the few who didn't back hunting.

For more profit, my neighbor also cut wood. He sold some for money, and used some to heat his home. One cold winter day, I asked him the price of his firewood and ordered some. The next day it was delivered. Although it looked big, it did not last as long as I expected, so I ordered some more. I was worried this could get expensive.

One day, as I drove down my path, he waved to me and said he had just cut some wood, but it was of poor quality and he needed some space. He said he would give it to me for free. I happily accepted this gift. Over time, he must have discovered that our need was great, for every time he had extra wood, we would have it. I came to appreciate his helpfulness, trust and kindness.

As Hurricane Ian bore down on Florida, many residents who decided to stay found themselves unable to leave.

When the water slipped in under the door of their home in Naples, Florida, it was just a sign that it was time to go.

It was around noon on Wednesday, September 28 last year and Darcy Bishop woke up her two brothers who had been resting after lunch. She pulled the wheelchair up to the oldest, Russell Rochow, 66. Her other brother, Todd Rochow, 63, was in his room, changing clothes. He could manage with a walker.

Both men had been born with disabilities, and their mental development was like that of a young child. But they found joy in their surroundings. Russell loved riding the bus and going to parks. Todd liked collecting cans at the beach and playing on the boat in the neighbor, Hance Walters’ home. Bishop, 61, was their lifeline, their little sister who had long felt a duty to keep them safe.

“We’ve got to get going!” she shouted to Todd. She went to open the front door. It would not move. The weight of the water on the other side had shut it tight.

She rushed to try the door to the garage, where Todd’s walker was stored. It, too, was stuck.

That’s when the house the three brothers shared began to flood.

The only way to go was up.

Bishop guided Todd to the stairs, and he grabbed the banister(栏杆). She helped him pull himself slowly up to the top where he waited in a chair.

But stairs were impossible for Russell, who could neither walk nor bend his stiff legs.

Bishop dragged on the belt around Russell’s waist, but he was nearly 77 kilograms. She tried every position possible, switching from pushing to pulling, and managed to get him up a few carpeted steps.

But the water followed.

Bishop called 911 and was told someone would come soon. But out the window she could already see furniture, boats and cars floating by.

Once upon a time, there was a boy who always enjoyed listening to his mother’s story about the statue (雕像) standing beside their house.

The statue’s name was Miriad, who was the symbol of kindness. People who walked by the statue showed their respect through bowing (鞠躬) in front of Miriad’s statue. It became a tradition in their village that everyman who died due to helping others would be honored as Miriad, and would be remembered by all the people.

One night, the boy asked his mother how Miriad gained his respect from all the people in this village. “He was just a simple man,” his mother said. “He helped people selflessly, thinking others first.” “Well, I can also do that,” the boy proudly told his mother. His mother continued, “That is the reason why people made Miriad a statue, for you child to copy and not to forget.”

One morning, the boy saw a little girl crying under an apple tree. “Why do you cry?” the boy asked. “I was trying to get myself some fruit from this apple tree and suddenly I fell down from it,” the little girl explained. “Let me do it for you,” the boy said. One noon, Mark knocked at the door, saying, “Take the letter.” Then, a little girl answered from inside, “I’m coming.” But after 3 minutes, no one came. Mark, the postman, said again, “Please hurry. I have to go to the next place.”

The girl, Jane, replied, “Sir, put the letter under the door. I’m coming. But it’ll take more time.” The old postman replied, “No, I’m waiting. It’s a registered letter. So your signature is needed.”

After a long time, the door open. Mark was angry and was about to shout at the girl. But when the door opened, he was shocked to see a little girl who had no legs. He immediately had great pity for her. He quietly gave her the letter, took her signature and left.

The little girl often lived alone in her house. Her mother wasn’t in this world. And her father used to work far away. He wasn’t rich and could not buy the girl prostheses(假肢). To take care of her, her aunt stayed with her every night. But she lived alone during the day.

In about two months, whenever mail came, Mark would knock and call Jane. Then he’d wait patiently at the door. Gradually, interaction and attachment(依恋) grew between them. And they learned more about each other.

Jane noticed Mark used to come barefoot(赤脚) to deliver mail. The rainy season came. One day, when Mark left after delivering the letter, his footprints were left on the wet soil. Jane came out with a piece of paper, put it on the footprints and took down the picture of his feet. Then she handed her aunt the pocket money she had saved, and asked her to get shoes of that size and keep them in the house.

One weekend, Mum and Dad both had to work, which meant that neither of them had time to look after Joe and Bella. But the two kids didn’t mind. They were going to spend the weekend with Gran, and Gran had promised to take them to the beach! But when they woke up on Saturday morning, and looked out of the window, they found the rain was pouring down!

Bella pressed her nose against the glass and said hopefully, “We can still go, can’t we?” But when Gran arrived to collect them, it was still pouring, and Gran said they would just have to spend the day at her house instead.

They tried taking Gran’s dog, Selby, for a walk, but when they opened the door, Selby took one look and ran back inside again! They did some homework, ready for Monday, and when they stopped — it was still raining Eventually, Gran went off to do some housework. Joe decided to do more homework. He had tests coming up at school and Mum and Dad were always on at him to work harder. Joe asked his sister to keep quiet. After a while, though, he heard noises from the kitchen. What was Bella up to? He got up and looked round the door. Bella was mixing something in a huge mixing bowl.

“What’s that?” Joe asked, a little annoyed.

“It’s a lovely cake,” said Bella happily. “But you can’t have any.”

“That’s a relief,”said Joe. “Because it looks terrible. And it smells worse!”

The cake mixture had all kinds of things in it and the smell was like no cake that Joe had ever smelled before!

“It’s not for humans,” said Bella. “It’s for dogs. I’ve made it specially for Selby, because he couldn’t go for his walk.”

“Well, I hope Selby likes it,” Joe said.

But Selby didn’t like it. When Bella put it down on the floor for him to eat, Selby took one smell and then ran out of the room! Bella burst into tears.

When one of our regular customers named Violet entered the store where I worked, I immediately greeted her with a big smile. She wore her usual sweater and her white hair was combed in its natural wave. The only thing missing was her bright smile.

“You may remember my husband passed away two months ago,” she said. “Our grandson feels really sad without him.” Violet told me her husband had played and shared many interesting stories with their eleven-year-old grandson and they had built a very close relationship. So she was looking for something to make her grandson happy again.

We searched the store shelves for a right gift to help reduce her grandson’s pain. “What about this?” I suggested, pointing to a painting of a boy walking through the darkened forest. Violet and I stood side-by-side and stared at this painting for a long time.

“That would be perfect,” Violet said. “If only I had that much money.” I hesitated (犹豫). Though we had no discount, I told Violet that there was a special twenty-percent discount for her. “That’s kind of you, but it’s still more than I can afford,” she said with her head down. “I only have twenty dollars to spend.” We were silent for a while. Then,a thirty-something man entered the store. I greeted him and said, “I’ll be right with you.”

“No hurry,” said the man. He slowly stood behind us. “Nice painting,” he said to Violet. “Are you going to buy it?” “Well,” Violet answered and then went on to tell him her hesitation.

After listening to her story, the man said, “I’ll pay the balance.” Violet raised a gentle protest (反对). “I couldn’t let you do that.” The man said, “I simply enjoy helping people. Besides, this painting is perfect for your grandson.”

Paragraph 1:

The man reached up to remove the painting from the wall and asked me to wrap it up.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In one of my Management classes in college, I sat in the same seat in the front every day. Every single day I sat there. Then one day I found myself sitting next to some foreign guy who hardly spoke English. His name was Albert. The most advanced thing that I had heard him say in English was: “Wow, my muffin(松饼) is really good!”.

This guy also had a habit of stacking(堆放) every item he owned in the exact space I sat. His bag, his food, his books, and his phone were always right on my desk space. Then every single time I walked into class, Albert would greet me with a broad smile: “Ah, Tom. You’re here. Okay,” and start wildly clearing my desk of his belongings. He then made it a habit to say “Ready for class, yeah?” and gave me a high five. Every morning the guy sitting next to me would give me a high five.

I was always annoyed with this guy. I was thinking: “Dude, you know I sit here in this seat every day. Why are you always stacking your stuff(物品) here?” And the last thing I wanted to do was give a guy who hardly spoke my language high fives at 8 in the morning! Just get your stuff off my desk!

But today I came to class and was a few minutes late. I was standing outside the classroom because I had to send a quick text. But through the door out of the comer of my eye, I could see my space—Of course, the usual—my desk was filled with Albert’s belongings!

As I was standing there on my phone, I noticed another guy who was also late walking into the class before me and trying to take my seat since it was closest to the door.
