1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mash Assadollah was the grocer at our corner store. Standing behind his glass display case, he tore out a page from a book. He twisted the page into a cone-shaped envelope and then filled it with tobacco. He then weighed the tobacco. He folded the envelope of tobacco closed and handed it to me. I was also buying sugar cubes and tea. Mash Assadollah calculated the amounts on an abacus (算盘). I paid him and left.

When I got home, Grandmother took the goods I had purchased, emptied the envelopes of their ingredients, handed me the wrappers, and asked me to throw them away.

It was summer vacation, and I didn’t have much to do. To keep myself busy, I sat down in a corner of the room and started to read the wrappers, which had once been eight consecutive (连续的) pages of a book. How well written and attractive the words were! It was a good story. I sat there until I had read all eight pages. Honestly, I had never read a book before, except for my textbooks. But when I read those eight pages, I realized that I now loved reading! The only problem was that the story stopped right at the best part, right at the end of Page 22, which was the most important and exciting point in the story.

It was about a boy who wanted to run away from home and escape his father who was always spanking (打屁股) him, but the boy was afraid. He finally left home but didn’t know where to go. I was excited to find out where he would go and what would happen to him.

On a Sunday afternoon, Kiana French was having fun fishing with her father and younger sister, not knowing the next minute, they would struggle not to sink in the freezing water. Their 12-foot boat was taking in water little by little, and the wind was picking up. Her father, Gary French, hurried to operate the engine, while Kiana,16, was in the middle with Cierrah, her sister, frightened but still able to keep calm.

Kiana asked Cierrah to take off one of her cowboy boots, with which she got some of the water out. Hard as she tried, that little effort would not help stop the boat sinking. Moments later, the unthinkable happened. The boat was full of water and then it flipped over. Kiana and her sister were dumped in the water. Their father, who had had a surgery six months ago, managed not to be thrown into the water but seemed to have great pain in the chest due to the sudden change.

Kiana quickly put on her life jacket and saw Cierrah’s and her father’s life jackets floating away. She reacted quickly to get them back and held her sister onto the boat. They were so far out in the middle of the lake that they could not see the shore clearly. What’s worse.it was getting harder to stay above the waves. Their father swam over and hugged his two girls. Cierrah crying silently. Kiana heard her beloved sister murmur, “I can’t feel my feet.”

Kiana knew the only thing to do was to get to shore herself and find help. She looked up at her father, exchanging a concerned glance, turned round and swam as hard as she could towards the shore

Fighting against the strong currents and cold wind, she screamed for help at the top of her lungs every three minutes or so. A strong wind blew, and she looked back only to see her sister’s and father’s heads bobbing(浮动)in the water. She burst into tears, thinking her sister and dad were dead, because she was taking too long.

The old man turned away sadly as his eyes were filled with tears. “Poor Mr. Dev…,”thought Indra sympathetically. Another day went past and there was still no sign of his family. Indra wondered how children could be so careless as to lose a parent like this.

Indra recalled the day the old man was admitted to her ward. He was thin and weak. He could not produce his identity card but he claimed he remembered the number. The hospital tried to contact hig family using the phone number he offered but it was in vain. Mr. Dev was treated for a lung infection and was now recovering. Soon, it would be time for him to be discharged (出院). Where would he go then? He did not look strong enough to live independentiy. Indra thtew down the file she was holding as anger rose within her.

“What's the matter?” asked Poh, Indra's colleague. “I'm just upset about old Mr. Dev,” Indra replied. Poh nodded with understanding. As a more experienced nurse, she had seen many similar cases and learned to control her feelings.

“Don’t worry too much. The hospital has contacted the civil - administration department (民政部门) and offered the information about the missing man, Mr. Dev will be placed in an old folks'home if no one comes to pick him up.” Poh said, patting Indra's arm comfortingly. Indra sighed. “I know. Its just that he eagerly expects his family to visit him. He cleans and tidies himself every morning and sits up to wait expectantly. You can see the eagerness in his eyes whenever the door opens. At the end offte day he goes to sleep with tears in his eyes. It makes me cry inside.”

Poh shook her head sadly. “He needs a miracle (奇迹).”

A few days later, the doctor confirmed that Mr. Dev was fit enough to be discharged. Indra was informed that an administrator had been waiting downstairs, ready to take Mr. Dev to an old folks'home. With a heavy heart, Indra helped Mr. Dev to get ready.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“Mama,” I screamed, “why is Ink Spot sitting in Mrs. Cleary’s window?” I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was about to step into my house when I saw Ink Spot combing himself in the window across the street. He was my cat, not Mrs. Cleary’s. She already had twelve cats; she couldn’t have all the cats in the neighborhood.

Ink Spot was my special cat. Santa Claus had left him in my Christmas stocking last year. How I loved him and held him in a close hug that winter morning. Mama and daddy smiled with pleasure as my eyes danced with joy.

I had always wanted a pet but the apartment we lived in didn’t allow anyone to have one. Then mama told daddy she was going to have another baby.

We moved out of the old apartment that March into a nice three-bedroom house on the other side of town. Da’Von arrived in September. The family was filled with joy, but I couldn’t see anything joyful in a crying red-faced baby who took up all mama’s time. About that same time, I was packed off to kindergarten. The school bus picked me up on the corner in the morning and dropped me off at the small spot in the afternoon. I put up with it just like I put up with everything else.

With everything going on at home, no one noticed me. That was until Aunt Calvina came for a visit. “That child needs just as much attention as the baby,” auntie complained when she noticed how I sat in the corner with my head bowed. Things changed after that. Mama paid more attention to me and daddy planned little trips for us over the weekends. It cheered me up a bit.

That Christmas was special for me because Ink Spot was in my stocking. The tiny black and white kitten was just the friend I needed to make me feel as though I were someone again. Every night, he curled up   beside me in bed and he was there for me after school when I raced home just to be with him.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!

After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station where the forester worked.

Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel—no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.

Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.

The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed with Steve inside.
