1 . 读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Losing a parent is one of the most painful parts of life. No matter how old we are when our parents leave us, it can be a heartbroken experience. Our memories are all that are left of them and happy reminders of their love turn into our most valuable treasures. That’s how Mara Soriano feels about the teddy bear that she tragically (不幸地) lost during her recent move to a new apartment.

Diagnosed (诊断) with cancer, Mara Soriano’s mother, Marilyn, gave her daughter the bear as a gift. After her mother’s death last June, the gift became even more special. “That bear was basically the last reminder of my mom. It was her voice that accompanied me,” she said in an interview.

The toy didn’t cost a lot, but it contained a recording of her mother’s voice telling her that she loved her so much and was proud of her. The bear, called Mama Bear, was in the backpack that contained electronics like an iPad. When the bag was lost last week during the move, the 28-year-old was heartbroken—not for the devices (设备), but for Mama Bear.

Mara posted a photo of her and her Mama Bear on the Internet, explaining the importance of the bear. Millions of netizens were touched by the story. More and more people were talking about the bear, but there was no good news for Mara. So again and again she posted online about the item and the story behind it, hoping it could catch more viewers’ attention in a big way.

Actor Ryan Reynolds was moved by Mara’s story and then posted an appeal for Mama Bear’s safe return. “I think we all need this bear to come home,” he wrote. Along with the message, he also offered a reward for the people who found the bear.

Jesse and I are good friends. But we have recently cooled off. It was last month that the story began in gym class.

“Come on. Emily!” Jesse sounded so impatient. “We’ll be late for class.” After math class was gym class, and I was a bit slow that day. Jesse kept urging me to hurry up.

Just then I found my wallet missing. I dropped my book bag to dig through my coat pockets. I was wet with anxiety.

“Someone took it.” Jesse said. As usual, she was quick to point away from the bright side of things.

Even though we were best friends. Jesse and I were just so different.

Jesse and I had to rush into the gym. Soon Jesse spread the news about the theft. By last period in gym class, I was tired of having to say over and over again, “I’m sure I just left it at home.”

After gym class, we went into the locker room. I was changing when I heard a gasp from Jesse. I looked at her and found her face was white with shock. There at her feet, was my wallet.

“It fell out of her locker!” Jesse pointed at Hellen a “new girl” in our class. “She stole it.” Everyone began to accuse Hellen at once.

“Jesse caught her red-handed.”

“Report it!”

Some people were beginning to wonder about Hellen.

I looked over at Hellen. She picked up the wallet and held it out to me. Her hands were trembling. “I found it in the parking lot. I was going to give it to you.”

Jesse spit the words “I’m so sure!” at her.

“Really, it’s true.” Hellen’s eyes began to fill with tears.

I reached for my wallet. I didn’t know what to think, but when I looked over at Jesse, her attitude made me sick inside. I looked at Hellen. She was scared but looked sincere.I knew I held her reputation in my hands.

“I am so glad you found it,” I smiled. “Thanks, Hellen.” The tension around us broke.

They waited there excitedly and anxiously, wondering what on earth the interview was! At the moment, a man rushed toward them and said he had something urgent to do. 4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I’ll call him Pete because I didn’t take the time to ask his name. A nameless hero who found his way into my heart.

I had taken Robert, my eight-year-old son, to a restaurant to celebrate his birthday. Lil’ Bob, we called Robert, wore his brand-new cowboy boots into the hall, his face shining with pride and joy. This was Lil’ Bob’s special day.

We approached the counter, where Pete greeted us with a clear warmth. His brown eyes twinkled with kindness.

“Welcome,” he said with a smile. “Wow, you look happy, little fellow.” Pete brought his face close to Lil’ Bob’s level.

“I got cowboy boots,” Lil’ Bob boasted. “I picked them out myself.” Lil’ Bob lifted his right foot in the air so Pete could see the hand-stitched leather.

“Those boots look amazing, like fresh leather,” Pete said. He opened his eyes and looked directly into Lil’ Bob’s eyes. “Thank you for sharing your treasure with me.”

Lil’ Bob laughed happily at Pete’s reaction. Then, Pete returned to the register.

“What does the birthday boy want to drink? It’s on me,” Pete offered.

Lil’ Bob shuffled back and forth in excitement since soda was a rare treat in our home. Now, he could order any soda he wanted. Lil’ Bob considered the many possibilities, taking more time than a fast-food customer should. Eventually, he settled on root beer.

“Excellent choice, my friend. It’s what I would have picked myself.”

Pete’s confirmation brought a massive smile to Lil’ Bob’s face. We ordered our meals and watched as Pete assembled the drinks and food on the tray (托盘) before us. When everything was on it, I reached for the tray, but Pete said, “Let me carry it out for you.” Pete followed us to the hall as the birthday boy took a considerable amount of time picking the perfect table. Pete patiently held our tray until we were seated.

For most people, having property stolen feels like a violation (违背) Robbie Pruitt admits when his mountain bike was stolen last September, he got mad, but soon enough, his emotions took a turn. After letting go of his anger and disappointment, he found himself on a road to sympathy instead.

As a crazy biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to replace his ride, but when he went bike shopping, he found the pickings had much reduced, which got him thinking: What if the person had done so because he truly needed transportation to get to work?

With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it to a local online group. Pruitt offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. He also put out a call for unwanted bikes, which he would repair — again for free — and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike.

The day the post went live, Pruitt ended up with a donation of 30 used bicycles. Then it was followed by more than 500 enquiries from people who either had bikes to donate or that needed fixing soon after. By the end of 2020, Pruitt had refurbished (翻新) more than 140 for donation or to be returned to their owners at about a 60% to 40% ratio.

Pruitt doesn’t check requests, but he does try to give away his donations to families that are truly struggling. The journey he’s taken has also moved beyond simply being a way to satisfy a material need to become an opportunity to show kids in his neighborhood the nuts and bolts of fixing their own bikes.

In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach resilience and teamwork, encourage self-respect, and develop feelings of community. Indeed, building up friendships is one of the biggest benefits of Pruitt’s avocation (副业).

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I lost all my hair at age 2 due to alopecia (脱发). Though all I can do was fit in when growing up, I would look at all the beautiful girls I was surrounded by at schools and in the media and think if I had hair, I would be beautiful, too.

I wore a wig (假发) and was often laughed at for it. They called me “bald (光秃的)”. I had no choice but just to let them laugh at me, because I know it was the fact. I felt like I deserved it, as if losing my hair was somehow my fault.

When I came to the senior high school, I still wasn’t okay with my alopecia and avoided talking about it. I was expecting a huge change, and I extremely wanted to be like everyone else. I kept my alopecia a secret and was fearful of telling anyone about it.

I remembered one day I built up the courage to tell a girl about my alopecia. Hesitating for a long time, I finally stammered (结结巴巴地说), “I have no hair because of alopecia.” She was shocked because I hid it so well. “I can’t have a date with someone who doesn’t have hair,” she said in a low voice. Disappointed and heart-broken, I turned around and walked away. From then on, I shut down, never wanting to let anyone know my alopecia again. I continued to wear my wig no matter what the weather was and what I was doing. It was my security and way to hide from the world.

Sports became my escape, though. I was fortunate to have inborn athletic ability. I would race home and play basketball for hours every day. I would pretend to make the game-winning shot when I was playing. I had big dreams. I did not think about my alopecia during these moments, but think who I wanted to become and what I wanted to accomplish.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

An old and fragile woman approached a very busy road intersection. She stepped slowly forwards. She paused at the sidewalk’s edge, grasping a heavy bucket filled with fresh red apples. She aimed to cross the street.

The way to the intersection before her seemed like a tough journey. The traffic lights changed regularly, and the flow of cars seemed to be non-stop for the old woman. She knew she had to cross the street to reach her destination, a small grocery store on the other side, where she sold her apples to make ends meet.

As she slowly made her way to the crosswalk, she held the handle of the bucket. A kind-hearted driver in the first car, recognizing her struggle, stopped well before the sidewalk, allowing her to cross safely. Grateful for this act of kindness, the old woman nodded and offered the driver a slight smile as she inched forward.

A second car, in the next road, also came to a stop. Its driver also witnessed the old woman’s slow progress. The kindness of strangers warmed her heart, and with their help, she moved another step closer to her destination.

However, the third road was a different story. As the old woman moved carefully further into the road, a speeding car approached, its engine making loud sound like a beast. Panic flowed through the old lady as she realized the approaching danger. The driver of the third car had not noticed her until the very last moment.

With a jolt (颠簸) of terror, the old woman’s holding on the bucket weakened, and the bucket slipped from her weak grasp. The bucket fell to the ground, releasing its goods of apples, which scattered (散开) in all directions. The sound of the crashing bucket and rolling apples echoed through the busy city traffic.

In the emergent time, the driver of the speeding car stepped on the brake to a stop just inches from the old woman. The drivers’ heart pounded in their chest as they realized how close it had come to a tragedy.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a pleasant Tuesday afternoon. 78-year-old Rose was brimming with excitement as she entered the nursing home with her favorite tulips (郁金香), her lips endlessly calling out to just one name—Emily!

“Emily! Where are you? I got flowers…” Rose spoke aloud when she didn’t see her best friend, 79-year-old Emily, waiting for her on the usual spot, a wooden bench on the main gate.

Whenever Rose returned from the local hospital after getting her blood tests done, Emily would run toward her with fresh hand-picked flowers. But that afternoon, Emily was not there, and the bench was empty. Emily was nowhere to be found in any of her favorite spots, which unsettled Rose even more. Just then a doctor said to Rose, “Emily’s family came hours ago while you were at the hospital... They took Emily with them. She’s not going to come back.”

The ground seemed to shake beneath Rose’s feet when she heard that. Rose went back to her room. Every step started feeling heavy, and every corner reminded her of her best friend and their laughter. Nothing but loneliness and silence surrounded Rose from all sides, and she felt her heart crack.

The scent of freshly picked flowers Emily had last left in the vase lingered (继续存留) in the still air. And beside the vase was an old recorder that endlessly played Just the Two of   Us, their favorite music they listened to every day.

When approaching the table, she noticed a note with a message in messy handwriting, “Dear Rose, please write to me at this address: Maple Ridge Ave, Springfield, VA,7…”

“Oh dear... The rest of her address is becoming blurred (模糊不清的).” Rose grew unsettled. In spite of that, Rose knew she could not just let Emily go like that. After a deep thought, she decided to reunite with her best friend.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was around eleven o'clock at night, and Mrs. Jones was walking alone when a young boy suddenly appeared from behind and attempted to grab her purse. The strap (带子) broke with a single pull, combined with the weight of the purse, which caused him to lose his balance. Instead of making a quick escape, he fell on his back, legs flailing (用力地胡乱挥动) in the air. The woman swiftly turned around and delivered a swift kick to his behind. Then, she bent down, picked the boy up by his shirtfront, and shook him until his teeth rattled (咯咯作响) .

Mrs. Jones asked, “What possessed you to do that?” The boy replied, “I didn’t mean to.” She accused him of lying, to which the boy admitted, “I'm sorry, lady.”

The woman then pointed out, “Your face is dirty. Don’t you have anyone at home to remind you to wash your face?” The boy replied, “No, ma’am.” She stated that his face would get washed later in the evening and started to walk up the street, dragging the boy along with her back home.

Upon arriving at her home, Mrs. Jones sent the boy to the washroom for a face wash, finally setting him loose. The boy, who seemed to be about fourteen or fifteen years old, had a thin but strong build and was dressed in tennis shoes and blue jeans. Mrs. Jones thought if he had been her son, she would have taught him right from wrong.

“You gonna take me to jail?” asked the boy, bending over the sink.

“Not with that face,” said the woman. “I was trying to get home to cook me a bite to eat and you took my purse! What do you want the money for?”

The boy admitted he wanted a pair of blue suede (绒面革) shoes, but the woman pointed out that instead of grabbing her purse to obtain them, he could have asked her. The boy was surprised by her response.

10 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Love is a road that goes both ways. Once upon a time, a little boy named David lived with his mother in a remote and small cottage. They couldn’t afford to live a luxurious life, but were satisfied with the little they had. Every day after coming home from school, David would accompany his mother to the forest to collect what they need, such as wood, wild vegetable, fungi, and so on.

One day, when David was in the forest by himself, he came across a puppy which seemed to be all alone. David looked here and there for its owner but in vain. So he picked it up, put it under his coat and carried it home. Reaching home, he said to his mother, “Mom, I found a little puppy alone in the forest! Can we keep him, please?” Feeling David’s excitement, his mother was in two minds about whether to keep the puppy or not. She told him, “Oh, David, that’s the cutest puppy I’ve ever seen! But we don’t have much. What will we do about his food and sleeping arrangement?” David replied, “It’s OK. Ill offer him half of my meals and let him sleep with me in my bedroom.” Hearing this, David’s mother just nodded. David’s happiness knew no bounds, and he named the puppy Cookie.

From that day onwards, David and Cookie became the best friends. Cookie followed David wherever he went. When David went to school, Cookie would patiently wait outside the classroom till the classes ended. At night, Cookie slept next to David on his tiny bed and dreamed sweet dreams.

One day, Cookie and David went to school together as usual. After school, they were following the familiar routine back home when it rained heavily with thunder and lightning, so that they were running in a hurry, trying to reach home as soon as possible. The roads everywhere turned slippery. Unfortunately, David missed seeing a hole at the side of the road and fell down the hole. He cried for help, hoping to be heard by passers-by. But due to the loud thundering and noise of the heavy rain, no one could hear him. Cookie barked loudly and anxiously, circling around the hole.
