文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。主要报道了中国最神秘的网红——李子柒。

1 . China’s Most Mysterious Internet Celebrity(网红)

Her life looks like one straight out of a fairy tale (童话). Li Ziqi impresses millions of people with her videos, where she makes seemingly everything with her own two hands, from dyeing a dress with fresh grape skin to fashioning traditional lipstick from roses in her garden.

She has millions of fans at home and overseas, but she remains a mystery to many of them. She barely speaks in her videos, and she rarely gives interviews. But now, she’s ready to open up to us.

To find Li, we had to travel to rural Sichuan Province in southwestern China, where she grew up. Li grew up with her grandparents there. But they were poor, so when she turned 14, Li went to work in the city. In 2012, she decided to return to the countryside to take care of her grandmother.

Four years later, she started filming her life there. Whatever she makes, she leaves no stone unturned, going as far as raising baby ducklings just to make a sauce out of salted duck eggs.

Apart from food, she’s also known for her videos presenting traditional crafts, like building a bamboo furniture set, which she says was inspired by one of her grandfather’s old benches. Li’s stylized presentation of rural life stands out in China’s extremely competitive field of online videos.

Today, four years after she first picked up the camera, Li is one of China’s most successful online video makers.

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he found that he only had one dime left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn’t eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at a door, thinking about what to say when it was opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while, “Would you please give me some...a drink of water?” the boy dared not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.”Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.

Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give an effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“No 7, Jobie Nymble, takes the lead,” cried the announcer. “Just one more hurdle (跨栏) and ...” Cheers broke out. “Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles!” The crowd went wild.

“County championships (锦标赛), here we come,” screamed Jobie, patting her green track spikes (钉鞋). They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. “Next Saturday, we’re taking home the gold,” Jobie whispered to her spikes, excitedly retying them.

“Don’t forget, guys,” said Marisol, one of her teammates. “My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park.”

Next weekend couldn’t come soon enough. Jobie smiled with excitement all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she’d ever leaped before. And it wasn’t long before everything in her path was a hurdle: flowerpots in her front yard, sidewalk cracks on the way to the bus stop and even her little sister, Teka!

The day of Marisol’s party, Jobie put on her favorite outfit: her blue shorts, an old track T-shirt from her dad, and her lucky spikes. “Perfect.” She smiled at herself in the mirror.

The party was under way when Jobie arrived at Hidden Park. She stopped by the track first, planning to do some practice.

“Jobie!” Two of Jobie’s teammates rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot. “Come on,” they yelled. “You have to try the slide.”

Jobie looked toward the party area. Suddenly, she saw it. The biggest slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Smiling kids zoomed down the slide at unspeakable speeds. Without thinking twice, Jobie took off her spikes and dashed (猛冲) toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky, but she reached the top in no time, closed her eyes and let go.

Jobie couldn’t get enough. She tried again and again. When it was finally time to go home, she unwillingly made her way back to the track where she’d left her shoes.

4 . “Mum, what does it mean when someone tells you that they have a skeleton (骨骼)in the closet (衣橱)?” Jessica asked. “A skeleton in the closet ?” her mother paused thoughtfully. “Well, it’s something that you would rather not have anyone else know about. For example, if in the past, someone in Dad’s family had been arrested for stealing a horse, it would be‘a skeleton in his family’s closet’. He really wouldn’t want any neighbor to know about it. ”

“Why pick on my family ?” Jessica’s father said with anger. “ Your family history isn’t so good, you know. 5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didn't wear boots, or rather, he didn't own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.

Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, “This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I don't have any money for a gift.”

Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were. It wasn't easy being six without a father, particularly when he needed a man to talk to.

Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer (微光) of the setting sun's rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime (一角硬币).

Never before had Bobby felt as wealthy as he did at that moment. As he held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.

He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his one dime offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying, “You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you.” As Bobby waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls loved flowers.

Paragraph 1:

A few minutes later, the shop owner came out.

6 . Last year, my oldest son Matthew went off to college. Things at home were not as “busy” as they used to be. We still had our 15-year-old son Gabriel with us, but we missed having Matthew around.

My wife soon had a crazy idea. “Let’s get a dog.” she suggested. I wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea, but I agreed. I mean, what better way to replace a kid that has gone off to college than to get a dog.

When we got to the animal shelter, it seemed like every dog was a pit bull (比特犬). I’d had many bad experiences with pit bulls as a child, so I didn’t want to take one of them home with me.

While I walked along the rows and rows of cold metal cages, a dog caught my eye. He was scared, and looked like he’d given up on life. There was only one problem: he was a pit bull.

As he looked at me with his big, beautiful eyes, I could see into his soul. I could see how scared he was and that he just wanted a happy life. I couldn’t just walk away — I had to at least go over and look at him. I approached his cage, and he just sat there, looking at me. I stuck   my finger through the hole in the cage and petted him on the head. I expected him to get mad, but he didn’t.

I knew that this dog had never felt love before, and that he was enjoying every bit of the love I could give him in that moment. Tears began to stream down my face because I felt everything that this poor creature was feeling right then. He just wanted to be loved; he just wanted a home and a family.

It’s been a year since we took the dog home, and our lives have been changed forever.

Now, his favorite thing to do is give us kisses with his giant tongue every morning. He is always there to greet us when we come home with a huge smile. He’s shown us more love than any other living creature on Earth ever had before. And every time I look into his eyes I see love, compassion and gratitude — things I never thought that a pit bull was capable of feeling.

1. Why did the author’s wife want to get a dog?
A.Because she liked a pit pull.

2. Which word has the similar meaning to the underlined word “thrilled”?
A.Accepted.B.Excited.C.Frightened.D.Delighted.

A.To share a warm story about adopting a pet.

We would look at his arms and feel he was unable to,” Ahmed said. “He insisted we allow him to prove himself. When he did that, we saw he was actually very good.”

When asked what he would say to others with physical disabilities, Ikram said, “No one should lose hope.” He added that he would one day like to compete at the international level, hopefully with government support.

10 . When I first met George, I was in my early 30s, seeking a creative outlet (出路) unrelated to boring housework and raising little ones. My children, then aged three and five, were just entering kindergarten and school life. At 65, George had recently retired and was seeking a rewarding hobby. For both of us, painting was ‘it’ and we met at a local painting class. Thus began a friendship that was to last until the day he died.

George arrived in Australia as an immigrant from Britain with his wife and two children. He worked hard, played hard, and had an opinion about everything. He adored his wife, his family, and his friends. A slim and energetic man, George took pride in his fitness and walked three kilometres every day.

As the only male in a painting class full of women, George ruled the roost and we were his hens. He adored his singular role and looked after his brood (一窝雏鸡) with the same attention he gave to everything.

He took to painting with great passion, even transforming the spare bedroom into a studio. A studio! His painting equipment was comprehensive. Ever practical, George housed many of these items in a red metal tool box.

After the completion of the course, we still kept in touch. One day when George was about 80 years old, he asked me to come to his house. George explained that he was giving up painting because of his illness and he gave away all his ‘stuff’ to me.

I still use much of his equipment today. The most treasured thing is the red tool box. The original shop sticker is still firmly in place although the price has long since worn off. But that’s all right because to my mind friendship is beyond price.

1. Why did the author go to a painting class?
A.To enjoy school life again.B.To make some new friends.
C.To accompany her children.D.To do something interesting.
2. What might the author think of George?
A.Reliable and caring.B.Proud and sensitive.
C.Talented and honest.D.Smart and adventurous.
3. Why did George ask the author to his home?
A.To tell her about his disease.B.To ask her something about his studio.
C.To give his painting equipment to her.D.To invite her to enjoy his paintings.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Fun in painting classesB.The red tool box
C.A friend—a second selfD.Life lessons from an old man
