1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的短文。

A Little Boy

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glared at them.

The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.

Dusk found the boy lingering on and hesitating what to do. As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (定额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, Sir, I am selling these magazines and, uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”

The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines (小雕像) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dogs?” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.

“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”

The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

Ann loves dogs, but she doesn’t have time to keep even one. Her husband died from an accident, leaving little money but a 10-year-old son, Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation. She had to work all day to support the whole family. One morning, Ann found a lost dog wandering around the local school. She waited there for half an hour but nobody came back to look for it. She had no choice but to take it home and asked her sons to keep an eye on the dog on the day while she was working.

Ann took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers as soon as she came back from work. After a quick supper , Ann, with Jack went out and put them in mailboxes. The next day, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, asking the boy to look after it for another day, and she hoped it would be the last day. She didn’t forget to warn her son not to fall in love with the dog, for they had no money or time.

Four days later no one called to claim, so Ann’s family was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. One day when she arrived home from work, the dog barked madly at her and dashed into the boy’s room where Ann found Jack suffering from a heart attack.

“If you had come to me ten minutes later,” the doctor said, “Jack would have not been saved.”

Still no one had called to claim the dog, and it had been the best friend of her son. Ann decided to keep it, although she knew it would bring so much difficulty.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Nita was recently married and had started living with her husband and mother-in-law. Nita's mother-in-law was conservative whereas Nita was liberal with modern lifestyle. Soon they both started quarreling due to differences in opinions and lifestyle. As days and months passed, neither of them changed their behavior.

Nita became very aggressive over time and started to hate her mother-in-law. Once, as usual, when she quarreled with her mother-in-law, her husband took his mother's side. She became so angry as to leave to her father's home. Nita's father was a chemist and she told him about everything that's been happening. Then she pleaded her father to give her something poisonous, so she could mix it up and give it to her mother- in- law to get rid of her.

Nita's father felt pity at her situation but tried to persuade her not to do anything against the law. However, Nita was in no mood to listen and understand. Finally, a clever idea occurred to his mind. He brought a powder and told her, "Every day when you make lunch or dinner, just mix a little of this powder in your mother-in-law's meal, since the quantity is less, she will die slowly in a few months and people will think she has died naturally".

He also told her, “Because no one should have doubt on you, from today onwards, you will not fight at all with your mother-in-law but instead you will be very caring towards her, even if she is rude to you, you will simply be polite only". Nita agreed, thinking she would be free from her mother-in-law's quarreling in a few months. As advised by her father, she started mixing the powder in her mother-in-law's meals and behaved in a caring and polite manner whenever her mother-in-law said something bad.

Paragraph 1:

As time passed, Nita's mother-in-law's nature also started to change.

Paragraph 2:

She hurried to her father's home and asked for the antidote( 解药) to cure the effect of that poisonous powder.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

At Dana’s yard sale, Tim chose a baseball from the toys spread on the card table and asked about the price. Dana told him everything was a quarter except Nezumi, a cotton toy rat. It was grey with some cotton sticking out from the hole where an ear had been torn off.

“Nezumi is extra special, so he is ten dollars. He needs a safe new home.” Dana sighed. Tim laughed saying he didn’t have ten dollars. Dana laughed too and gave Nezumi to Tim as a free gift because he was her friend. When Tim whispered it was sort of old, Dana said old toys were the best. She then invited Tim to her birthday party the next evening, adding that her parents were giving her a real rat for her birthday. Tim was amazed and asked if it was a live rat.

“Of course.” Dana said.

At home, Tim’s mother showed him the gift she had bought for Dana. It was a knitting spool(针织线轴) shaped like a mushroom. Mom said Dana could knit a scarf for her doll. Tim sighed that Dana wasn’t a knitting kind of person but a rat kind of person. Mom laughed after knowing what had happened. Together they drove to the pet store, where Tim searched and searched and selected a clear plastic ball, one in which the rat could run around on the floor safe from cats and dogs. Tim thought of Nezumi’s ear and decided Dana’s new rat would need this ball.

The next day, Dana brought cupcakes to class. When she handed a cupcake to Tim, she asked if Tim brought Nezumi to school as Nezumi liked to ride in backpacks. Tim was at a loss because Nezumi was at home on his bed. Then Dana asked what gift he was giving her. Tim replied it was a surprise. In silence they sat for a while before he heard Dana say her parents were giving her a new bike for her birthday instead of a live rat because they thought rats would bite things.

8 . The baggy yellow shirt had long sleeves and four extra-large pockets. It was faded (褪色) from years of wear, but still in good shape. I found it in 1963 when I was home from college on Christmas break, looking through bags of clothes Mom planned to give away. Seeing me packing the yellow shirt, Mom said, “I wore that when I was pregnant (怀孕) with your brother in 1954!”

“It’s just the thing to wear over my clothes during art class, Mom. Thanks!” Then I put it into my suitcase. The yellow shirt became a part of my college wardrobe (衣橱). I loved it. After graduation, I wore the shirt the day I moved into my new apartment and on Saturday mornings when I cleaned.

The next year, I married. When I became pregnant, I wore the yellow shirt. I missed Mom and the rest of my family, since we were in Colorado and they were in Illinois. But that shirt helped. I smiled, remembering that Mother had worn it. That Christmas, I repaired one sleeve, packed it in holiday paper and sent it to Mom. When Mom wrote to thank me for her real gifts, she said the yellow shirt was lovely.

The next year, my husband, daughter and I stopped at Mom and Dad’s to pick up some furniture. Days later, at the kitchen table, I noticed something yellow tied to its bottom. The shirt! And so the pattern was set. On our next visit home, I secretly placed the shirt under Mom and Dad’s mattress (床垫). I don’t know how long it took for her to find it, but almost two years passed before I discovered it under the base of our living-room floor lamp. The yellow shirt was just what I needed now while refinishing (重新整修) furniture.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

I lived in the State of Texas, where sudden storms often happened every year. Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After lunch, Papa headed out to the field to check on the cattle while Mama started dinner. Everything seemed peaceful. Faye and I played happily in the yard. The heat had been building since dawn. Suddenly the temperature dropped--- it felt good.

Then Mama shouted from the house, “Iris, you and Faye get inside, read quick now!”

I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust, like thick smoke from a railway engine’s chimney. All the birds flew away. The stop lights nearby weren't working because of a power failure.

“Faye, go with Mama!” I shouted. “I’ll warn Papa.”

Faye ran toward the house. The storm hit so fast that I hardly saw her climb the steps. In a short time, the day turned into night. I screamed for Papa, hoping my voice would lead him back. But I couldn’t hear or see him at all.

Some poor house roofs were blown off, and small trees down. I thought a terrible storm was on the way and the scene was “the worst I've seen in several years.” The dirt and sand stung(刺痛) my face like a thousand bees. I needed to get to shelter. Covering my face with one hand, I made my way toward the car and opened the door. Dirt flew in with me as I pulled the door closed. Papa was still out somewhere! I needed to help him find the car.

I searched the dashboard (仪表板) and found the switch for the front lights. They made some rays, but would Papa see them in the thick darkness? I pushed the horn (喇叭) again and again, hoping Papa would hear it.

Suddenly, Papa’s face appeared at the window.

Papa shut off the car’s lights and I worried the dirt would bury us.

10 . The family of a 6-year-old adopted Chinese girl who badly needs a bone marrow transplant (骨髓移植) believes they have found a match in China.

Kailee Wells suffers from a serious aplastic anemia (再生障碍性贫血), which prevents bone marrow from producing new blood cells. She has taken courses of treatment but has shown little sign of recovery.

The best help for such patients is a transplant of healthy marrow or blood cells from a suitable donor. Certain tissue of the patient and the donor must match.

Kailee’s mother, Linda Wells, made her second trip to China earlier this month to find a donor. Her husband, Owen Wells, said that his wife believed doctors there had found a match.

“For these last 22 months, we’ve been living in fear that Kailee would take a turn for the worse and there would be nothing we could do about it,” he said. “Now we have something we can use and save our little girl. We are just about ready to start jumping up and down and rejoicing.”

Wells said a Chinese girl who is about a year old has a blood sample that matches Kailee’s perfectly. The next step, he said, would be to make sure the sample is safely harvested and protected for transplant, the details of which have yet to be worked out.

Linda Wells first traveled to China in February to try to locate the girl’s birth mother, who is likely to be a match. But she found no relatives and decided to try again this month.

“This gives us so much encouragement because now we found what we thought we would never be able to find for Kailee,” Owen Wells said. “We’re going to continue our blood donor drive to try to continue to help as many people as we possibly can. We’re just so happy.”

1. What do we know about Kailee Wells?
A.She was adopted by a Chinese family.
B.She has a one-year-old sister in China.
C.She was recovering from aplastic anemia.
D.She is unable to produce new blood cells.
2. The underlined word “rejoicing” in Paragraph 5 can be best replaced by “_____”.

3. What can we infer from the text?
A.Linda Wells has found the girl’s birth mother.
B.Owen and Linda tried every means to cure Kailee.
C.Doctors have worked out plans to protect the sample.
D.Owen and Linda visited China twice to find a perfect match.
4. What would be the best title for the text?
