When David passed by him, he noticed that the old man was looking at him. The old man looked as if he admired him very much. David was confused. Why would such a rich man admire him? He was so poor while he was so rich.

Finally, David decided to have a talk with the old man. So he stopped and walked to the old man.

“Hello,” he said.

“Hello,” said the old man.

Then they started talking. David told the old man he really admired him.

“You have such a beautiful house. You’re so rich! How I wish I were you!” said David.

Hearing that, the old man smiled and said, “And I admire you, too! I wish I were you! If I were you, I’d still enjoy my youth. Now I’m so old. Wealth doesn’t mean much to me!”

Unless a miracle (奇迹) happened, I would be homeless in January, foodless and jobless. I had prayed steadily for weeks, and there had been no answer but this coldness and darkness.

The air was full of Christmas merriment, with the bells ringing and children shouting in the bitter dusk of the evening dreaming of the gifts from Santa Claus (圣诞老人). But there should be no Christmas for me, I knew, no gifts, no remembrance whatsoever.

Thinking of this, I couldn’t control my tears on my way home, but I managed a smile so I could greet my little daughter. She opened the door for me and threw herself in my arms, screaming joyously and demanding desirably for her Christmas gift. There I stood, frozen, overcome by sorrow.

For the most part, Hank, a two-year-old tan-and-white rescue cat, is a homebody - and for good reason. The one time he got out his yard in Washington. DC, he managed to get stuck in a 12-metre-tall tree for two days with no food or water.

Hank’s big adventure started last November 6. Delores Bushong his 75-year-old owner, had just returned from a farmers market when she realized Hank hadn’t come in for his midday snack. She called his name in alleys and streets around her home. As it got dark, she began to worry. Then she heard mewling, looked up and spotted Hank, seated on a branch near the top of a neighbor’s tree.

Bushong believes Hank got under a fence and then became scared by some dogs. The more scared he got, the higher he climbed.

“Cats have an amazing ability to climb up trees, but actually they aren’t that good at climbing down,” said Dan Eramo, director of field services for the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA).

Bushong, now worried about getting Hank down, asked the HRA to take the lead, but it was no easy task. HRA called the fire department, but it refused to help, citing safety concerns. Then Bushong called a construction company to ask about renting scaffolding(脚手架) but was told she would have to book the equipment 48 days in advance.

Next she reached out of a local tree company, Casey Trees, where volunteers helping with planting and trimming. But the crew that came out analyzed Hank’s predicament(困境)and said it wasn’t safe for a person to go up into the tree because the branches weren’t strong.

Bushong was quite upset. “To realize something you love is in trouble and you personally can’t do anything about it is very frustrating,” she said.

An employee at the store tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to come with her. I was panicked for a moment, thinking that I was going to be scolded and thrown into the storage area to keep us quiet. The employee, whose name I would later find out was Kelly, took me, to my surprise, to the Starbucks cafe that was inside the store. She asked me if I drank coffee. When I said yes, she walked over to the counter and came back with one for me. She said that it looked like I was having one of those days and that, as a mum, she had them, too. I told her how stupid I felt locking my keys in the car, and she assured me it happened to a lot of people. As we talked, my son settled into a sound sleep in my arms.
