Papa always wanted a cowboy to help on our farm. When I was born, he probably took one look at me and said, “Send her back!” OK, so I overstate a little. But I know he wishes I were a boy. He’s always calling me “Joey” instead of “Josefina”. I’ve been riding in barrel races since about the time I started walking. But whenever I ask to help herd the cows here on the farm, Papa always says, “That’s men’s work.”
One Saturday morning it rained cats and dogs. I flew into the kitchen when I smelled the delicious pork sausage. Papa had already finished eating and was putting on this rubber boots. Without a word, Papa walked out into the downpour and his face fell. “Is Papa mad at me?” I asked Mama, who sat at the table drinking coffee. After filling my plate with eggs and sausage, I sat down beside her.
“Your father’s worried about the cows, ” Mama explained. “Unless he can drive them to high ground, they might drown. He needs help.” “I’m pretty good on horses, ” I reminded her between bites. “I’ve got several cups to prove it.” She laughed, “You know how Papa feels about young ladies driving cattle.”
I did, but I decided to make an offer anyway. When he came to the stable, I was there waiting. “I could help if you’d only let me, ” I told him. He stood there for what seemed like an hour, and then said, “Go get your raincoat, Joey.”
“It’s Josefina!” I raced back into the house. Walking in my widebrimmed hat and hightopped boots, I felt like a cowgirl.
Fully equipped, Papa and I set off in the heavy rain. Papa rode on a big horse named Miguel and I on my small horse Isabella. We began calling the cows as soon as we reached the side of the river. Our horses made a noise every now and then as muddy water from the flooded stream tickled their bellies.

There was once a lonely fisherman by the name of Troung Chi. Every evening, as he sailed, he played his flute (笛子) and all who heard his music agreed it was the most beautiful sound they had ever heard. But his face was ugly, and the girls in his village kept away from him. And so he lived alone.
At that time there lived a young lady who was both rich and beautiful. She spent her days sitting in her room, safe, but alone. Every evening she sat at her window and waited for the fisherman to slip past as the sweet notes of his flute thrilled her heart. She swore that she would marry him one day. So she begged her father to permit the boy into the house so that she could look him in the eyes. However, he shook his head and said that a fisherman was too poor.
She lay in her new room and sobbed (啜泣). She sobbed and sobbed until she became so ill that her father feared for her life. At last he compromised. The father sent for the fisherman and asked him to sit beside his daughter’s bed and play his flute. If his music proved to be strong enough medicine to cure her, he would be rewarded with a bag of gold.
Troung Chi sat by the bed and played. His sweet notes reached her inner soul, and the warmth of his love came over her body and revived (唤醒) her. At last she opened her eyes and looked up at him — the fisherman of her dreams.
But oh, he was ugly! How frightful! This was not at all as she had imagined. “Take him away!” she screamed. “I don’t want to look at his ugly face!”
The boy was driven out of the room. The secretary offered him a bag of gold, but he refused it. His heart was broken. He went to his boat, and as he sailed away, he threw his flute into the water. He was never seen again.
After Troung Chi had been gone for some days, the young girl regretted her behaviour. She never married. For the rest of her life she remembered the boatman’s tender love and his beautiful music.

8 . There may be a thousand ways to say “Happy Birthday!” but the sweetest of all may very well be a special chocolate message that was recently served up by an amazingly thoughtful restaurant staff.
Creating congratulations in warm liquid cocoa was nothing new at London’s Luciano by Gino D’Acampo restaurant, but for birthday girl Natalie Te Paa, who is totally blind, the best wishes were spelled out in Braille (布莱叶盲文).
What gave the message an even greater meaning was that there was no advance planning involved. When the restaurant crew learned the dinner Te Paa was sharing with friend Claire Sara was a birthday celebration, they took it upon themselves to find and recreate the Braille translation that summed up their best wishes in well-chilled chocolate.
Te Paa could barely believe her fingertips as she traced over the raised dots.“My mind was blank for a second and then I was like, ‘Is this in Braille?’”Ta Paa said. “I’ve never had anything happen like that before. It was wild. They just really did go above and beyond. I couldn’t control my tears of joy.”
Dinner companion Sara recorded Te Paa’s delighted reaction to what had become a very different kind of surprise party and posted the cheerful footage to TikTok.
While restaurant manager Giovanni Galluccio maintains the impromptu (即兴的) gesture was simply part of the customer service they try to extend to all their patrons, clocking in with close to 16 million views to date, the Internet judged the extraordinary act of kindness extra special.
As Te Paa said, “The fact that people have responded so much and so well to it just shows how much the world needs kindness right now, how much the world needs a message of hope, needs to see people doing things and going above and beyond for each other.”
This is one message sure to melt in your hearts, not in your hands.

Todd cried out in shock and waved his arm at the pale blue screen hovering above the breakfast table. The hologram news paused. “Carolyn,” he called across the kitchen, “did you see this?”
His wife, Carolyn, was collecting her cereal from the breakfast robot. “What is it, honey?” she asked. Todd pointed at the floating blue screen. Carolyn read the headline:
Another prison breakout: faulty robotics blamed.
“Oh, don't worry,” Carolyn chuckled. “That's an old facility. The robots there were bound to break down sooner or later. Plus, I know for a fact that they weren't well maintained,” she added. “Julius was telling me about it. That place isn't as advanced as ours.”
“But the report says that even new, regularly-maintained robots can break down,” Todd protested. “And in a maximum-security prison like yours, one small error could cause a lot of problems.”
Carolyn smiled at him. “You worry too much,” she said. “Now, I'd better be going or I'll be late for work.” She grabbed her bag from the kitchen counter and rushed out of the door. Todd heard the air car start up outside. It was not until an hour later that he noticed that Carolyn had left her emergency call device on the breakfast table.
