3 . Collin was lying on his back when his sister, Mary, came in. From her red eyes, Collin could tell she felt homesick again.
Their family had moved to the Moon nearly four months ago. It still didn’t feel like home. The houses were cosy, but outside everything was gray and rocky and lifeless. There was even no weather there at all—no rain or snow or even wind.
“I miss everything, even the sound of rain on the roof,” Mary said sadly. “Worst of all, my birthday is in two days, and I don’t think Mom and Dad are planning anything special.”
She’s probably right, thought Collin. Life on the Moon was busy for scientists like their parents. He doubted if they had time to plan a party. If there was no party, maybe he could give his sister a gift. However, with limited room in their transport ship, each child had been allowed to bring only two toys from the Earth. Where could he find the gift?
The next day, as Collin wandered toward the agricultural center, he found some bamboo plants, which made good building materials. An idea flashed across his mind. He took a piece of bamboo plants, made tiny holes into it, then poured a handful of Moon cobblestones inside and sealed the open ends.
When it was done, Collin hurried home, holding the bamboo piece carefully. On seeing his sister, Collin said, “I have a present for you.” He handed his sister the bamboo stick. “Happy birthday!”
“What is it?” Mary asked, looking at it curiously.
“A rain stick,” said Collin. “Whenever you turn it over, the Moon cobblestones fall inside and it sounds like rain.”
Mary turned the stick, and the room was filled with a sound like rain drumming on a roof.
“It’s Moon rain!” she said. “It makes me feel like I’m home.” She smiled at Collin and turned the rain stick over again.

The Saturday before Christmas, 1 o'clock a.m., I was heading for a bird-watching site a few hours north. The weather forecast called for the possibility of fog, but the drive down was clear.
As I approached the destination, the fog began to build. At a bend, I hit a road shoulder and lost control of the truck. I tried to correct, but it was too late. With a clang, the back of my truck went over a steep bank and slid down to the water. There was a series of flashes, clicks, and whirs before all lights and electronics went out. I prayed that the water wasn’t deep.
At first, the scene seemed peaceful, almost beautiful. In the dim light, I could barely make out that I was in a large canal floating gently downstream and spinning slowly. I tried to open the door, but it was locked. The water had shorted the electrical system.
I remembered I had a glass breaker. It was in the centre console (仪表盘). I grabbed the tool and gave the passenger window a sharp hit, but the breaker merely bounced off. I hit it again, with the same result. I tied a two-handed swing but only managed to scratch the window.
With each failed attempt, the urgency of my situation built. Water gathered at my feet. I lay down on the seat and tried to kick out the window, but my feet just bounced off. By this point, the truck was mostly submerged (淹没) and the water was pushing against the window. Inside, the water level was over the seat, and cold water soaked my back and neck.
If I could reach my toolbox behind the seat, surely I would find the tool to break the window. I dived for it, with objects floating around me: a plastic bottle, a foldable windshield cover, a small pillow. The inside of my truck had become a giant snow globe, and I was trapped in it.

6 . I never saw daffodils (水仙花) in Gaza.
My father used to say, “English is a window looking over the world.” He specialised in English Language and Literature. At home lively debates would erupt about literature or philosophy.
In the following years, I studied hard and finally worked as a research fellow to investigate the impact of conflict on health in the Middle East and North Africa. During this time, I attended an artistic workshop, which offered the skills to share my research findings through artistic media like poetry.
Recently, a poem inspired by my research will be featured in the Creative Encounters exhibition, which forms part of the Cambridge Festival.

I know what courage looks like. I saw it on a flight I took six years ago, and only now can I speak of it without tears filling eyes at the memory.
When our L3011 left the Orlando airport that Friday morning, we were a high-energy group. The early-morning flights hosted mainly professional people going to Atlanta for a day or two of business. And a couple of rows to my left, a seemingly 6-year-old kid nestled in her mother's arms.
Immediately the aircraft took off, and it was clear that something was wrong for it was bumping up and down and jerking left to right. But as experienced travelers, we just took these minor problems for granted. However, minutes after we were in the air, our plane began falling wildly and one wing lunged downward. The plane climbed higher but that didn't help.
The pilot soon made a grave announcement, “We are having some difficulties,” he said. “At this time, it appears that our hydraulic system(液压系统)has failed. We will be returning to the Orlando airport at this time. Because of the lack of hydraulics, we are not sure whether our landing gear(起落架)will lock, so the flight attendants will prepare you for a bumpy landing. Also, if you look out of the windows, you will see that we are dumping fuel from the airplane. We want to have as little on board as possible in the event of a rough landing. ”
In other words, we were about to crash. No sight has ever been so alarming as that fuel, hundreds of gallons of it, streaming past my window out of the plane's tanks. The flight attendants helped people get into position and comforted those who were already desperate.
As I looked at the faces of my fellow business travelers, I was stunned by their facial expressions. Many looked visibly frightened. Actually, their faces looked gray in color, something I'd never seen before. No one faces death without fear. I thought. All around, people cried, wailed and screamed.

8 . On May 15, 2013, Sarah and David Brown heard the words every parent dreads: Their newborn wasn’t going to make it. Their twins—a girl and a boy—were born two minutes apart and 13 weeks premature, weighing just over two pounds each. Doctors had tried to save the boy for 20 minutes but saw no improvement. His heartbeat was nearly gone, and he’d stopped . breathing. The baby had just moments to live.
“I saw him gasp, but the doctor said it was no use, ” Sarah said. “I know it sounds stupid, but if he was still gasping, that was a sign of life. I wasn’t going to give up easily. ” Still, the couple knew this was likely goodbye. In an effort to cherish her last minutes with the tiny boy, Sarah asked to hold him. “I wanted to meet him, and for him to know us, ” Sarah told the Daily Mail five years later. “We’d resigned ourselves to the fact that we were going to lose him, and we were just trying to make the most of those last, precious moments. ”
Sarah unwrapped the boy, whom the couple had already named Jamie, from his hospital blanket and ordered David to take his shirt off and join the boy and the girl in bed. The first-time parents wanted their son to be as warm as possible and hoped the skin-to-skin contact would improve his condition. They also talked to him.
“We were trying to make him stay, ” Sarah said. “We explained his name and that he had a twin that he had to look out for and how hard we had tried to have him. ” Then something miraculous happened. Jamie gasped again—and then he started breathing. Finally, he reached for his father’s finger.
Eight years later, Jamie and his sister, Emily, are happy and healthy. The Browns only recently told the kids the story of their birth. “Emily burst into tears, ” Sarah said. “She kept hugging Jamie. This whole experience makes you cherish them more. ”

Mary, an eight-year girl, whose father was the keeper of a lighthouse on the coast of England, was always being told that the lamps can avoid lots of tragedies. The light of these lamps shines at night to guide ships on their way and to keep them from dangerous rocks and shoals.
One afternoon Mary was in the lighthouse alone. Mary's father had prepared the lamps, hanging high on the wall, and they were ready for lighting when evening came. As he needed to buy some food, he crossed the causeway which led to the land. This causeway was a path over the rocks and sands, which could be used only two or three hours in the day; at other times, the waters rose and covered it. The father intended to come back home before the tide (lowed over this path). Night was coming on, and a storm was rising on the sea.
Mary's mother was dead, and although she was alone, her father had told the girl not to be afraid, for he would soon return. Now there were some rough-looking men behind a rock, who were watching Mary's father. They watched him go to the land. They were “wreckers” who hid about the coast. If a ship was driven on the rocks by a storm, they rushed down — not to help the sailors, but to rob them.
The wicked men knew that a little girl was left alone in the lighthouse, so they planned to keep her father on the shore all night When Mary's father came back near the road leading to the causeway, the wreckers rushed from their hiding place and threw him on the ground. They quickly wrapped him up with all kinds of things. They then left him in the charge of two men, while they ran back to the shore. At the same time, the storm was raging with almost hurricane force.
“Oh, Mary, what will you do?” the father cried anxiously as he lay in the shed. “There will be no one to light the lamps. Ships may be wrecked, and sailors may be lost.”
