2 . I never saw daffodils (水仙花) in Gaza.     1     When I was walking in the gardens, a line from Wordsworth’s poem came to mind: And then my heart with pleasure fills,/And dances with the daffodils.

My father used to say, “English is a window looking over the world.” He specialised in English Language and Literature. At home lively debates would erupt about literature or philosophy.     2     I was born into a refugee (难民) family as my father and grandmother had to leave their motherland for Kuwait because of war decades ago. When I was 13, my family travelled to Gaza but we had to stay there as a war broke out in Kuwait. I became a refugee for the second time. However, my parents were determined that my education was of the greatest importance.     3

In the following years, I studied hard and finally worked as a research fellow to investigate the impact of conflict on health in the Middle East and North Africa. During this time, I attended an artistic workshop, which offered the skills to share my research findings through artistic media like poetry.     4     I didn’t find it difficult to write — I’d be walking along, and the lines just seemed to flow out of me.

Recently, a poem inspired by my research will be featured in the Creative Encounters exhibition, which forms part of the Cambridge Festival.     5     They bring a lightness and beauty, and within this lightness and beauty lies hope.

A.In this way, I rediscovered my love of poetry.
B.I specifically focused on the health of people in Gaza.
C.So they enrolled at the English Department of a top University in Gaza.
D.Despite the happy atmosphere in our home, a shadow lay across our lives.
E.They knew from experience that even if everything was lost education remained.
F.It was only when I came to University of Cambridge that I saw them for the first time.
G.While my research can’t express Gazans’ sufferings, my words can be a voice for them.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I know what courage looks like. I saw it on a flight I took six years ago, and only now can I speak of it without tears filling eyes at the memory.

When our L3011 left the Orlando airport that Friday morning, we were a high-energy group. The early-morning flights hosted mainly professional people going to Atlanta for a day or two of business. And a couple of rows to my left, a seemingly 6-year-old kid nestled in her mother's arms.

Immediately the aircraft took off, and it was clear that something was wrong for it was bumping up and down and jerking left to right. But as experienced travelers, we just took these minor problems for granted. However, minutes after we were in the air, our plane began falling wildly and one wing lunged downward. The plane climbed higher but that didn't help.

The pilot soon made a grave announcement, “We are having some difficulties,” he said. “At this time, it appears that our hydraulic system(液压系统)has failed. We will be returning to the Orlando airport at this time. Because of the lack of hydraulics, we are not sure whether our landing gear(起落架)will lock, so the flight attendants will prepare you for a bumpy landing. Also, if you look out of the windows, you will see that we are dumping fuel from the airplane. We want to have as little on board as possible in the event of a rough landing. ”

In other words, we were about to crash. No sight has ever been so alarming as that fuel, hundreds of gallons of it, streaming past my window out of the plane's tanks. The flight attendants helped people get into position and comforted those who were already desperate.

As I looked at the faces of my fellow business travelers, I was stunned by their facial expressions. Many looked visibly frightened. Actually, their faces looked gray in color, something I'd never seen before. No one faces death without fear. I thought. All around, people cried, wailed and screamed.

Their twins—a girl and a boy—were born two minutes apart and 13 weeks premature, weighing just over two pounds each. Doctors had tried to save the boy for 20 minutes but saw no improvement. His heartbeat was nearly gone, and he’d stopped . breathing. The baby had just moments to live.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给悄节,使之构成—个完整的故事。

Mary, an eight-year girl, whose father was the keeper of a lighthouse on the coast of England, was always being told that the lamps can avoid lots of tragedies. The light of these lamps shines at night to guide ships on their way and to keep them from dangerous rocks and shoals.

One afternoon Mary was in the lighthouse alone. Mary's father had prepared the lamps, hanging high on the wall, and they were ready for lighting when evening came. As he needed to buy some food, he crossed the causeway which led to the land. This causeway was a path over the rocks and sands, which could be used only two or three hours in the day; at other times, the waters rose and covered it. The father intended to come back home before the tide (lowed over this path). Night was coming on, and a storm was rising on the sea.

Mary's mother was dead, and although she was alone, her father had told the girl not to be afraid, for he would soon return. Now there were some rough-looking men behind a rock, who were watching Mary's father. They watched him go to the land. They were “wreckers” who hid about the coast. If a ship was driven on the rocks by a storm, they rushed down — not to help the sailors, but to rob them.

The wicked men knew that a little girl was left alone in the lighthouse, so they planned to keep her father on the shore all night When Mary's father came back near the road leading to the causeway, the wreckers rushed from their hiding place and threw him on the ground. They quickly wrapped him up with all kinds of things. They then left him in the charge of two men, while they ran back to the shore. At the same time, the storm was raging with almost hurricane force.

“Oh, Mary, what will you do?” the father cried anxiously as he lay in the shed. “There will be no one to light the lamps. Ships may be wrecked, and sailors may be lost.”

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了一个放高利贷的人想要利用诡计娶一个商人的女儿,商人的女儿利用自己的聪明成功脱险。

7 . In a small Italian town, hundreds of years ago, a small business owner owed a large sum of money to a loan-shark. The loan-shark was a very old, unattractive looking guy that just so happened to fancy the business owner’s daughter.

He decided to offer the businessman a deal that would completely wipe out the debt he owed him. However, the trap was that he would only wipe out the debt if he could marry the businessman’s daughter, heedless to say, this proposal was met with a look of disgust.

The loan-shark said that he would place two pebbles into a bag, one white and one black. The daughter would then have to reach into the bag and pick out a pebble. If it was black, the debt would be wiped, but the loan-shark would then marry her. If it was white, the debt would also be wiped, but the daughter wouldn’t have to many the loan-shark.

Standing on a pebble-strewn path in the businessman’s garden, the loan-shark bent over and picked up two pebbles. While he was picking them up, the daughter noticed that he’d picked up two black pebbles and placed them both into the bag. He then asked the daughter to reach into the bag and pick one.

She drew out a pebble from the bag, and before checking, it ‘accidentally’ dropped into the midst of the other pebbles. She said to the loan-shark, “Oh,how clumsy (笨拙的) of me. Never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked.” The pebble left in the bag is obviously black, and not wanting to be exposed, the loan-shark had to play along as if the pebble the daughter dropped was white, and clear her father’s debt.

1. What is the businessman and his daughter’s attitude towards the proposal?
A.Supportive.B.Disapproved.C.Neutral.D.Skeptical.
2. Why did the pebble drop?
A.Because the daughter pretended it
B.Because the pebble was too slip to hold.
C.Because the daughter was too clumsy to hold it.
D.Because the businessman was angry and rejected the game.
3. What did the daughter choose to do at last?
A.She refused to pick a pebble from the bag.
B.She took both pebbles out of the bag and expose the cheat.
C.She chose not to expose the loan-shark while winning the bet with a trick.
D.She picked the black pebble from the bag and decided to sacrifice herself.

It was my twelfth birthday, and what I really wanted was a new bicycle. But I knew my family couldn’t afford one.

A new bike was just a dream, so I wanted a nightstand (床头柜). I figured that at least I would have a safe place to keep my private things. So I asked my parents for a nightstand with lockable drawer (抽屉).

We went to the secondhand furniture store and found an old, dark brown nightstand. It didn’t look too cool, but at least it had drawers that I could keep locked. I decided that I would paint it to make it look better.

After we took it home, I was getting ready to paint it. When I pulled the drawers out, I felt something stuck (卡住) at the back of the bottom drawer. I reached in all the way to the back and was surprised to find a bag.

When opening the bag, I realized that there were some papers in it which were some kind of official-looking documents (文件). And beneath were a bunch of dollar bills! Talk about finding a treasure! And on my birthday!

I went ahead and read the papers, which turned out to be a will (遗嘱). Some old lady was leaving her savings to her son and grandchildren. The old lady must have died and nobody knew the money. Her family donated the nightstand to the secondhand furniture store and it was now in my hands.

I counted the money, over 1,000 dollars in total. I was going crazy. With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle. I could even buy bicycles for my younger brothers. Maybe I could also get my parents a car.

What a dilemma! I could keep it and get all kinds of things for myself and my family. Or I could give it all back. “Somebody helps me with this!” I begged. But I really didn’t need anyone else to give me the answer. I already knew right from wrong. I decided not to fail this test. It was a test of honor-my honor.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲的是作者的父亲虽然已经高龄,但是还是加入摔跤队当助理。

10 . When my son joined the high-school wrestling team last fall during COVID-19, my 83-year-old dad also asked me to ask if they needed an assistant coach. I wondered how the coach would feel about my son’s grandfather asking to help, given that it was over 60 years ago that he wrestled? “He wrestled in university,” I said.

A few days before the first practice, I e-mailed the coach to tell him that my son’s grandfather was 83. I was nervous. What if he wasn’t what they were looking for? In the e-mail, I assured the coach he was in good health. I pointed out that his hearing aids had sat unused for over five years. He just didn’t like wearing them.

As I dropped my dad and 16-year-old son off for their first wrestling practice, my dad turned to my son, “I am not going to embarrass you, am I?”

“Not too much,” my son replied.

At the first practice, Dad met the coach and told him he would do anything he needed. When he and my son returned, they were both overjoyed. Dad made the team, but “God, I wish I could hear the coach!” he said. One day, he realized he forgot his hearing aids as I dropped him off. We turned back. “I need these to hear what the coach is talking about,” he reminded me.

In his free time, Dad went to the library and he borrowed the book Wrestling for Dummies. He read up on different moves and the scoring system. “It is a lot different from my university days,” he told me.

The coach gave him a team sweatshirt with the logo of the school on the front and “Wrestling” on the back. He wears the sweatshirt to every practice.

COVID-19 has not allowed me to watch any of the practices or meets. I rely on my father to give me the play-by-play of what is happening in the wrestling room. He is energetic. I’m proud to be a wrestling daughter.
