1 . When Joseph Novetske finished raking (清理) leaves in his backyard a few weeks ago, he suddenly stopped. “I happened to look at my hand. No ring,” said Novetske, 80, who lives in Charlotte, Michigan, with his wife, Mary Ann. His handmade gold wedding ring, which he wore for 42 years, had gone missing. Worried, he began to look for it.
The couple searched the yard with no luck and it was getting dark. “I was feeling a little hopeless,” said Mary Ann Novetske, 71.
The following morning on Nov. 5, she posted in a private Facebook group called “What’s happening in Charlotte, Michigan now.” “Does anyone have a metal detector (探测器)?” she wrote in a post, explaining what had happened.
Shortly after sharing the post, Mary Ann Novetske had dozens of responses on her post. That afternoon, eight people showed up at their home, five of whom were strangers, and the other three were neighbors, to look for the ring. A few of them had brought metal detectors.
They searched the large backyard. It was filled with several tall piles (堆) of leaves Joseph Novetske had raked the day before. “They didn’t know us, but here they were,” said Mary Ann Novetske. “It was exciting to see so many people care about this.” Her husband was also touched. “We love community,” he said.
When the search had hit hour three, the group collectively began working on a pile of leaves at the back of the yard. Then Joseph Novetske saw something shiny. “I saw the ring shining because it was a beautiful sunny day,” he said. “There it was!” The searchers were overjoyed. While losing the ring was stressful, the couple said that finding it filled them with hope.
“It was a community hunt,” said Lisa Delcamp, who lives next door to the Novetskes. “We should lend a hand and be willing to step in when our neighbors are in need.”

After his wife died, Ramu was left alone in this world. He was sixty-five years old. With time going by, Ramu’s sadness increased. The more he thought, the stronger his belief became that it was useless to live in this world anymore.
One morning, he went out for a walk and didn’t return to his home. His steps took him out of city and there he saw a bus. He took that bus. After a few hours, the bus was passing through a thick forest and stopped there for a break.
Ramu stepped out' of the bus and headed in a direction. After a while, he heard a voice from the bus calling for passengers to return but he decided not to return. He wanted to get lost in the thick forest.
In the thick forest, even during the day there was slight darkness. Ramu was walking as if he was not conscious (有知觉的). While walking, he went towards the side of a mountain. His steps suddenly stopped at a place where the mountain opened towards a valley below. There he saw the path was blocked by two sticks and a sign written in big letters—DANGER.
He couldn’t understand who would write this in such a thick forest. While looking around, Ramu walked a little further towards the valley, seeing a deep ditch (壕沟) ahead. At that moment, his heart trembled (颤抖).He sat aside, thinking how a moment ago he wanted to die but now he was scared.
With a calmed mind, he started wandering, looking for the person who did this. While wandering, he saw many signs. He saw DANGER/ BEWARE sign at many dangerous places and POISONOUS FRUITS sign was written on many trees.
He realized that if those signs were not put up, anyone could have fallen into one of those deep ditches and lost his life. Seeing all this, Ramu called out loudly, “Brother, who saved my life? ! I want to see you.”
Just then, from behind the leaves, an old man appeared laughing and said, “I have been watching you for a long time. Tell me how did you come here?”

In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price — five dollars — was far beyond Reuben Earle’s means. Five dollars could buy almost a week’s food for his family. Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything Mark Earle made through fishing went to his mother, Dora, who struggled to feed and clothe their five children.
However, he opened the shop’s weathered door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his old but clean shirt and trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled.
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the five dollars and not tell anybody. On hearing the sound of hammering (敲打) from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails (钉子) bought in large bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he found two bags, which he sold to the man in charge of packing nails.
The boy’s hand tightly held the five-cent pieces as he ran the two kilometers home. Near his house stood the ancient barn (谷仓). Reuben found an old soda tin and dropped his coins inside. Then he climbed into the barn and hid the tin in it.
It was dinner time when Reuben got home. His father was ready to serve dinner as Reuben took his place at the table. He looked at his mother and smiled. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. Her chores were never-ending. But she was happy. Her family and their well-being were her most important things.

We had a garden in our backyard and I always watered the flowers together with my little sister, Laynie. She had her own watering cans and small shovels so she could ”work“ with me. One day, I showed her how to grow flowers: Dig a hole. Put in a few seeds. Cover them up with dirt. Water them every two or three days.
“See, Laynie,” I explained to her, “Beautiful flowers will grow from these tiny seeds in a few months.”
The next day, after everything was watered, she ran to the fence and started watering another spot. I walked over and saw some fresh dirt near the fence.
“Did you plant something here?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said. “I’m growing a pencil. My pencil got too short, so I planted it.”
“But. . . ”
I wanted to laugh and tell her the truth, but I changed my mind and said, “Uh. . . I had never tried that before.”
Late in the evening when Laynie was asleep, I dug up the short pencil and “planted” a brand-new one. Laynie was really excited when she dug it up the next morning.
“My pencil grew!” she shouted.
A few days later, Laynie was watering on the same spot. One day later, new crayons stuck their pointy little heads out, thanks to me.
“My crayons grew, too!” Laynie yelled, jumping up and down.
Next, Laynie grew an adult bear doll from a tiny one, a soup spoon from a teaspoon, and a hand mirror from a piece of glass. When she claimed that she had grown these things, I just kept my mouth shut! Actually, it was fun trying to think of what should grow from Laynie’s magic “seeds”. And it was cool to see her get excited.
One morning, I saw her carrying our little gold fish to the fence. I knew immediately what she was going to do and rushed to its rescue.
“How long does it take to grow a big goldfish?” she asked me seriously.
