Every summer, Jimmy’s beach restaurant receives lots of diving lovers from all over the world. One day, an urgent call came in. A newly married woman, who had spent the afternoon at the beach restaurant for her honeymoon, couldn’t find her wallet. Having turned the whole hotel room upside down, she realized the restaurant was the most likely place where she had lost it.
Near to a breakdown, she sobbed on the other end of the line, “I don’t care about my ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash, but my wedding ring is inside!”
Jimmy didn’t like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he set out to find the wallet. He spent hours searching 16 different surveillance cameras (监控) watching the woman’s every step in the restaurant until she went to sit on a bench right outside and left when her ride arrived. Soon, boy in rags approached the bench, shoved (乱塞) something in his pocket, and walked off. Considering that the boy looked more of a kid than a criminal, Jimmy posted a video clip on the restaurant’s Facebook page and said, “I don’t want to punish him. I Just ask if anybody knows who the boy is.”
Within hours, Jimmy got a text from 14-year-old Tony, who’d heard about the post from his sister. Tony admitted having taken the wallet. So poor was his family that they hadn’t eaten in two days. Desperate and helpless, he took the wallet from the bench the moment he caught sight of it. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet into the water. Then he bought some sandwiches for his family. Out of sympathy, Jimmy replied, “I see, but the ring means the world to the new couple. Where did you throw it off? Just tell me the exact spot.” However, there was no reply.

2 . Many years ago, I met a man whose unique psychology helped me to get away from a life of struggle and uneasiness for great happiness, for peace of mind, and for a measure of success I otherwise would not have attained.
He was George Robert White, who lost his parents at eight, badly off for a long time. However, his God-given beliefs made him both a material and a spiritual millionaire at thirty. As a young man, Mr. White took over the leadership of a small plant, and throughout his career he donated a large part of his net profits to charity. Despite his unusual business practice, he built that tiny concern into a world-famous corporation, and became the multi-million-dollar manufacturer.
Before I met him, my path to success was the ordinary road over which most American businessmen travel—endless hours of hard work, social contacts, wise investments. But where was the resulting happiness that my material gain was supposed to have afforded me? I discovered that I had no more peace of mind.
I took the advice of Mr. White to open the pathway to happiness and freedom of mind. “Personal and business success, built upon materialism alone, are empty shells over disappointment and saddened lives,” he emphasized, “Cast your bread upon the waters and it will come back in abundance. ” If we are to be happy, to be successful in every aspect of the world, and to live truly full lives, we must share ourselves, as well as our material gain, with our fellow men.
Since Mr. White’s death, I have made great efforts, as his successor, to stick to his code of morality. Two dollars out of every three earned by our corporation is shared with others. My reward and my blessings have come to me in the form of personal satisfaction and peace of mind that had been foreign to me.

The Summer I Learned to Really See
It was a muggy(闷热)end-of-summer dog day in Missouri. I was preparing to go after the mail—about a mile's distance, through fields and forests, across a river, from our farmhouse, in which three generations of my family lived.
“Take the bucket with you,” my grandmother said, handing me the very familiar bucket.
“What for?” I asked, petulantly(使小性子). The berries had been picked, and it was too early for wild grapes, too late for roasting ears(穗).
“You'll find something to fill it with,” she said, her blue eyes sparkling with anticipation.
I didn't want to take the bucket. It would be a burden to me. Twice a day I'd carried a bucket for milking. With it I'd carried feed to the chickens, salt to the cows, sugar to the neighbors. I'd had enough with carrying with the bucket!
Nevertheless, I took the bucket. Halfway to the mailbox, I set it down beneath a pokeberry bush(胡桃树). I needn't carry it the whole way, I reasoned. There was no mail. When I got back to the bucket, I saw that a few ripe pokeberries had fallen into it. With childish ill humor, I picked off enough clusters(花串) to fill the bucket, even though I thought they were good for nothing.
“Aren't they just lovely!” Grandma exclaimed admiringly when I set them on the kitchen table. She squeezed out the juice of the berries and we used the lovely red ink to paint rings on our fingers and pen letters to distant cousins.
When I went to mail the letters the next day, Grandma again told me to take the bucket along. This time I carried the bucket a little farther than the previous day before setting it down. There was only a sale catalogue in the mail. When I got back to the bucket, I dropped it in. But I felt vaguely uncomfortable, remembering the pokeberries. I caught sight of a bunch of peppermint(薄荷) growing close to the path. Funny, I had passed it every day and never noticed it before. Peppermint just doesn't spring up overnight. I picked a bucketful, its fragrance seeming to cool the day. Grandma was pleased with the peppermint. She liked to chew it and make tea with it.
