文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要强调了如何正确处理和运用批评,帮助读者克服接受批评时常见的负面情绪和反应,从而更好地改进自己的表现和促进自我成长。

1 . Being able to accept criticism (批评) and use it wisely is not just an important life skill; it’ll also make you happier.     1     Here are several rules for doing just that.

It’s not personal.

When we receive criticism, we tend to consider it a judgment on our abilities rather than on our performance.     2     The solution is to set up an internal belief such as: “It’s not a personal attack on me. I’ll think about it on its face about the matter at hand.”

Treat criticism like helpful information.

Depersonalizing (去个人化) criticism is a helpful approach that moves the focus from emotion to analysis.     3     It’s a rare glimpse into what outsiders think about your performance, and thus a potential opportunity to correct course and improve.

Make criticism a gift, never a weapon.

4     For some—bosses, for example—doing so is part of the job. The key to criticizing to best effect is to remember the gift/weapon rule: If I am criticizing to help, I am doing it right; if I am doing it to harm,I am doing it wrong.

Praise in public, criticize in private.

A study showed that positive feedback given to students in public was 9 percent more inspiring than when given privately, while negative feedback in private was 11 percent more inspiring than in public. So what does that mean for your rude Amazon reviews?     5     Or better yet, don’t send them at all—unless you truly intend them to be constructive.

A.Unfortunately, we hate being criticized.
B.Send them to the author directly, if you dare.
C.We all have to give criticism from time to time.
D.Once you do it, you can start to see criticism for what it is.
E.We may naturally analyze the critic rather than the criticism itself.
F.It leads to lower self-worth, lower positive mood and less confidence.
G.A way to master the skill is to form new habits of getting and giving criticism.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My mother influenced me a lot. When I made a mistake, she never turned a blind eye to it. She also helped me develop many good hobbies. Handmade creation was one of my favorite hobbies. I often found myself immersed in the world of creativity and engaged in various art craft exhibitions at school.

One Saturday morning after breakfast, I told my mother that I’d go and visit the annual model aircraft exhibition on campus. Then, I set out, expecting what wonderful crafts I’d come across this year. Upon arriving, I eagerly started to explore the diverse range of creations.

Among the many fascinating exhibits, one model aircraft particularly caught my attention. I stood there for a while, admiring the beauty of this piece. Its intricate details and precise craftsmanship were truly impressive. As I reached out to get a closer look, my foot suddenly slipped, and the next thing I knew, the model aircraft was knocked over. In a split second, its wing snapped (折断), leaving me stunned and horrified.

My heart sank as I realized this was not just any model; it was a prized creation of one of my classmates. “If the organizers find I have made the model damaged, they may angrily blame me for my carelessness,” I thought.

Fear and guilt swept over me, and I was consumed by the fear of facing the consequences of my actions. With no one around to witness the accident, I hesitantly returned the damaged model to its original position. My hands were shaking as I did so and I could feel the heat of embarrassment rising to my checks.

Just as I was about to leave, my craft teacher walked by. She noticed my uneasy expression and stopped to ask if I was feeling well. Her kind and concerned tone made me feel even worse. I gave a quick excuse and hurried away, leaving behind a model with a broken wing and a heavy heart.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One day, Mrs. Green asked everyone about their dream jobs. The classroom suddenly got filled with eager voices as classmates enthusiastically shared their dreams. “I want to be a college professor,” said Sarah confidently. “I dream of becoming a basketball player,” exclaimed Mike with light in his eye. The air was filled with dreams of doctors, nurses, police and various professions.

When Mrs. Green turned her attention to me, inquiring about my future career, I hesitated. “I don’t know yet,” I admitted. Then she asked if I wished to follow in my dad’s footsteps. “No,” I replied firmly.

My dad is a distinguished doctor with a demanding schedule, who often finds himself engaged in the responsibilities of his job. Thus, he often return s home late in the evening. The limited time we spent together during my growth created a noticeable distance in our relationship. I had such a lot to complain about his job and thus being a doctor would be the last option I would take.

Upon hearing my response, Mrs. Green remained silent. Instead, she encouraged me to reflect further.

A turning point came when our school organized a cultural festival. It was an important event, and we had been preparing for it for a long time. For my role, I needed to purchase a costume. Unfortunately, my mother was abroad, so the responsibility fell on my father. Unwillingly, I agreed, acknowledging that there was no other choice.

In the mall, my dad’s unfamiliarity with the shopping list became apparent. Despite Mom’s thorough list, we wandered aimlessly through the floors, struggling to find the necessary items. As we did, I felt a growing sense of discomfort.

Suddenly, a chaos drew our attention. A crowd had gathered, and someone was shouting for help. It turned out that an elderly customer had a fall, and onlookers were at a loss on how to assist.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章通过叙述Ashen Jayasooriya的言行和观点,以及他的梦想和人生目标,来展示他的领导才能和个性特点。

9 . When it comes to leadership, there are key qualities we should look for. The Head Boy of the WP/KE/ Gurukula College, Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, Ashen Jayasooriya, is a leader who has such key qualities.

“Challenges are necessary for life. Success can be achieved by overcoming challenges. Mistakes can be corrected through criticism (批评). Criticism is important to minimise mistakes and move towards success. So, challenges and criticisms make my life exciting. I am a person who carries out the responsibilities given to me and someone who always follows the right path; I am a person who always takes the advice of the seniors and works tirelessly to bring respect to the school; and also a person who works co-operatively with lower-level companions, as well as someone who thinks carefully when making decisions, while respecting the opinions of others,” he says.

Jayasooriya calls for intelligent and far-sighted leadership. He feels that the misuse of power is a social evil that eats away the human spirit, relationships as well as society.

“We all should act wisely and carefully. Leadership is not a crown that we wear. It is about carrying out responsibilities. When making choices, you need to understand that there are results. The world today and tomorrow demands intelligent leadership, not leaders who protect the crown that they wear. As leaders, we have to face challenges calmly, with insight and calmness, and overcome them”, explains Jayasooriya.

Jayasooriya has many dreams; the biggest is to pass the GCE Advanced Level Examination with honors for all three subjects and enter the Sri Jayewardenepura University. Through his career, he aims to serve the country as well as lead a successful life. He concluded by saying that as human beings, we must never forget the importance of pity and kindness. Modesty is important, and unfortunately, we do not see this in many of those who rise to higher positions of power.

1. Which of the following can best describe Jayasooriya as a leader?
A.Creative and intelligent.B.Open-minded and responsible.
C.Brave and respectful.D.Demanding and thoughtful.
2. What does the underlined part “eats away” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Fuels.B.Destroys.C.Mistakes.D.Connects.
3. What is leadership in Jayasooriya’s eyes?
A.Having dreams.B.Valuing the position.
C.Making choices.D.Leading by serving.
4. What is the best title of the text?
A.A True Leader
B.Leadership challenges
C.Leadership Is Wisdom
D.Criticism Makes a Good Leader
