Hello, everyone!

That’s all. Thank you!
My parents love the saying “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again" so much that they even bought a pillow with those words on it. But I was recently in a situation where I was SO ready to give up.
It started last week when my friend Ollie and I were helping his grandmother Mary to carry boxes from her garage to her car for the homeless shelter rummage sale (义卖).
At the sight of a big old trunk (行李箱),we asked Mary what was inside. But she told us that as she had lost the key, she had to find a master locksmith to figure it out. "Let me have a try!" said Ollie. “I bet I can open that lock in two minutes flat! Maybe there's a treasure inside, like gold or diamonds or an ancient map!"
Mary smiled. "I'll tell you what. If you two treasure hunters can open this trunk, you can have it, along with whatever is inside."
Ollie got a tool kit and we set out to open the lock. But he definitely lost that bet. Those two minutes turned into two hours, with no luck at all. We had tried every tool in the kit, but the lock wouldn't move slightly.
“It's no use." Ollie sighed. "I guess we have to give up."
“But we can't give up!" I said. "What about 'If at first you don't succeed, try, try again"?"
Ollie shook his head. "Unless you know a magical key fairy, we're never getting this unlocked."
Just then, my little brother Tex showed up. He showed great interest in the trunk. "It looks like an upside-down boat! Can I turn it over and pretend I'm sailing in the ocean?"
"Sure," Ollie replied. "It's no good for anything else."
“Ahoy!" Tex said, climbing on top after Ollie and I turned it over. “I’m the captain!” He giggled as he jumped up and down. And right then, a screw (螺丝) from a hinge (铰链) came loose and rolled to the floor.

4 . The daughter shouted as soon as she entered the door, “This world is too unfair!” It turned out that she was talking to her deskmate while having a math class. She was caught by the teacher. And finally she and her deskmate were both punished.
“It’s fair. I said. ” That’s not fair! There were clearly several classmates who were talking at the time, but the teacher stared at us and only punished us,” she said angrily.
I knew that my daughter cared about this matter. I asked her, “Should you be punished for speaking in class?” She nodded, but said at the same time, “It is unfair for me that the teacher didn’t punish other students who spoke!” I told her, “Don’t talk about others. Just look at yourself. Was it wrong to punish you?” She lowered her head and answered, “No.” I said, “That’s fair! You know what the price of speaking in class is. You did it and got the punishment. So it’s fair. The teacher didn’t punish others, because she could choose to forgive, but it didn’t mean unfair.” My daughter could not understand. But she was not as angry as the moment she entered the door.
People are often like this. Standing and looking at themselves, they are very clear about what they are doing. They also know what their rewards and punishments should be, but the unfair mentality (心理) is that when they look up at others. The feeling about unfair comes from comparing with others. The most important thing is to understand fairness in a deeper way, not only from your point of view!

6 . Many families avoid long-term travel while their kids are young or in school. Travelling with babies is cheaper - and there's no school to worry about-but they're unlikely to remember much about the trip. Older children will form longer-lasting memories but you'll need to keep up with their studies, which is the main concern for many parents.
In the past 7 months' travelling in Australia, I have witnessed the educational benefits to our daughter Chloe. The biggest blessing we have gained is her desire to learn.
And remember, just because children are not in a classroom, it doesn't mean they can't have access to formal education.
Anyway, school shouldn't be a barrier to having one of the greatest experiences of life. There're so many families whose children have returned to class after a year of travel with so much more confidence, knowledge, intelligence, social skills and problem solving skills. Travel hasn't blocked their learning.
A.Instead, it has greatly improved it! |
B.She has loads of questions for us to answer. |

7 . As I entered the job site, I could hear my 16-year-old son before I could see him. The sounds of a loud radio in an empty room upstairs, combined with the heavy strike of a hammer and loud music, led me to where he was taking apart a built-in cupboard. He was sweaty, his face covered in dirt and drywall dust. And he looked exhausted.
For a brief moment, I felt guilty. On a hot summer day, my son was covered in dirt instead of relaxing by the pool with his friends. And, though we have a family vacation planned for later in the summer, he wasn’t spending his summer vacation days backpacking through South America or participating in a camp program centered on an activity he loves. Rather, he gets up before dawn to work. He carries tools and a water bottle with him and he eats a turkey sandwich on his lunch break. He’s learning how to take orders from a job foreman(工头)and how to use power tools. He’s also learning just how strong his long, skinny body is, because pulling 30-year-old carpeting out of a house is no easy task.
I have moments when I remember my own happy summer days spent in front of The Price Is Right and Days of Our Lives. I wonder if he’s missing out, but I remind myself that having a job as a teen is just as important as attending film camp or drinking with friends on a Saturday night. After his first day on the job, my son came home and announced that he spent four hours cutting heavily-glued tiles(瓷砖)out of a basement. “I wasn’t going to give up until those things came off the ground,” he told us.
The backbreaking work of physical labor is teaching him just as much as, if not more than, the mental challenge of a high school AP class. It turns out, too, that having a regular job during the summer might be just as attractive to a college admissions officer as a trip to volunteer in another country.

8 . Why I Always Travel With a Paper Map in Hand
The first thing I do when I arrive in a foreign city is find a paper map. To me, it's the single most important task I have to accomplish upon arrival.
Then I use that paper map to figure out which sights are closest to each other and how I can use my time most efficiently.
No doubt you may wonder why I don5t just pull out my phone. I do own a smartphone with GPS.
My trusty map, on the other hand, is all about context. Ask me the nearest bridge, major market or landmark, and I'll be able to tell you in an instant. Besides, a paper map does not run out of battery.
For a traveler like myself, that paper map is like an entrance into another world. Staring at it transports me into a dreamlike state. I imagine all the places I'll go and the things I will do.
A.It never has a poor connection. |
B.But I don't have the habit of using GPS. |
C.And all these makes me become a responsible tourist. |
D.That map, you see, is my key to getting around the city. |
E.However, I think my phone's GPS robs me of something. |
F.And it enables me to begin planning how I'll make it happen. |
G.I put dots where the bookstores, restaurants and museums are. |
9 . A year ago, I had one of the most important interviews of my life.
This tough situation led me to hesitate during the interviews. It also recalled my past experience of being interviewed when an interviewer asked me to give an example of a time when I had been caring. The answer that came to mind was that I volunteered at a nursing home and felt honored to sit with the patients and listen to their stories. But I didn't think that was dramatic enough to impress the interviewers. So, instead I told them about when one of the residents threw up, I cleaned it up.
Back to my most recent interview and the question about how to shoulder the multiple responsibilities of the role.
I've come to realize that interviews don't have "right" or "wrong" answers. I still see them as exams, but they're not testing my ability to copy somebody else's answers. Actually, the exam is about something I am well familiar with: me.
A.I hesitated but not for long. |
B.I immediately felt embarrassed. |
C.I wasn't sure which answer to give. |
D.Never give the interviewers wrong answers. |
E.It seemed the interviewers were quite satisfied. |
F.It's not about "right" answers but about being yourself. |
G.At the end, I was asked how to balance the different parts of the role. |
10 . Someone asked “What’s your “secret” to a happy life? What makes your life wonderful?” on a forum.
I don’t want to make you annoyed. In fact, I think I’ve got a higher level of life satisfaction than a lot of my friends. I can make sure there are four things that I think I do a little differently from a lot of people.
*Focus on being grateful for all the amazing and miraculous things in my life.
My wife is a good human, I work with good people,
*Try to find pity for people - especially those who make me mad in one way or another.
I don’t think people realize how painful they feel until they’ve lost something. I don’t think how they want to express their love for those who have died until they’ve made a truly regretful mistake. However, it is too late.
*Ask yourself if you could be wrong, and really be open to it.
A.I am not sick right now. |
B.Here are some tips for you. |
C.I hope they will bring you some joy! |
D.I’ve lost touch with my good friends. |
E.Tell people you love them and be generous with your friends. |
F.Give yourself a break, and don’t blame yourself with unreasonable standards. |
G.If you don’t have sympathy, you will stop trying to find the truth behind people’s actions. |
