1 . Here are the lessons that my first swimming experience taught me about starting a business.
Tell your friends and family about your decision. I started telling my close friends and family members about my intention to go swimming for the first time. Some of them laughed at me, but it didn’t stop me. I did it for two reasons. On one hand, I wanted to receive encouragement On the other hand, however, telling people about it made me responsible for them.
Secure yourself. After getting my swimming ticket, I quickly asked for a lifebelt I wasn’t about, to go into the swimming pool for the first time without it. Prevention is always better and cheaper than cure Make security a priority in your new business.
Enjoy yourself. Yeah, I had a lot of fun at the pool.

I could not see his face to be sure, as it was laid between his folded arms on the table. He had a long warm coat, and a big backpack which made me think he could be a homeless. I quit wondering, went to his table, patted him on the arm and asked him, “Are you OK?” He raised his head and said something in a whisper, nodding yes. I realized by the strong smell that he was indeed a homeless man.
I asked him if he was hungry. He responded but I could not understand his answer. However, I didn’t give up and asked him if he would like some rice balls at which he raised his head saying clearly this time that he would be thankful for a rice bait Immediately I went to the nearest shop and bought a drink and a warm lunch box, and brought them to him. He said “thank you” but didn’t eat right away and made no move, maybe because he was a little shy in the presence of a lady.
So I left them on his table and changed my waiting place. When I passed again nearby, he was eating. You should have sensed my great pleasure. I was so grateful that I had the ways to help an old man even if only for a moment of his life.

4 . Since last March, I have been visiting a pet clinic because of my cat Eddie. The clinic is in northern Massachusetts, about two hours from our home on Cape Cod. I expected it would be terrible depressing but it’s just the opposite. I have been so surprised at what I have learned there.
Now I believe happiness is something to love in any form. If I’ve ever know an angel, it is Keri, Eddie’s technician. Both Eddie and I are under her loving care. She gives Eddie his medicines. She gives me emotional guidance as well.
I can offer tell when it’s someone’s first visit. They’re usually crying. I think the reason why the rest of us don’t cry has nothing to do with hope. I think it has to do with another ingredient of happiness. When we think about our pet’s distant future, even if they’re healthy, w will feel sad. Keri, in her prayerful voice says, “Focus on loving Eddie right now.” “Right now” is the only way people think at he clinic.
Instant connection is what happens in the waiting room. We join together to tenderly life a lame dog. We take turns distracting a cat with sparkly toys so she doesn’t chew her bandage. Nobody asks for help. Everybody offers. We just do it.
When the end of life is very near, owners often believe their pet’s happiness is more important than something like a strict diet. A young fellow whose pet dog suffers from canner says, “He can have anything he wants now.” So I guess an element of happiness is not so much the length of a life but the joy and peace that life contains.
At this place, the focus is not on dying, and it’s not on living. The focus, for pets and for people, is on living happily.

when l went to law school.
I'd made a decision a thousand times: I'm going to lose weight now. But what motivated(激发)
me to get serious about it was turning 30.1 weighed 414 pounds.1 was always tired. Some of my
family members have suffered from heart disease, and l was frightened. I also wanted to look better.
So after my birthday,1 walked into the office of a weight loss doctor.
She was very understanding. Her focus was on balanced meals and she wanted me to exercise.
Walking was all I could do at first. I started by walking a few blocks and gradually increased the
distance, until one weekend, I heard myself saying, "Wow, this seems pretty easy." So I started to run.
1 was losing nine or ten pounds a month, and I had more energy. I started to think about the New
York City Marathon. For years,1 watched the runners and thought, "This looks like fun, but I could
never do that." But now I realized that maybe I could.I joined the New York Road Runners.I ran a
l0km, then a half marathon.I still wasn't confident I could run a full 26 miles. But I told myself I was
going to do it, no matter what.
By my 33rd birthday,1 was down to 180 pounds. I started formally training for the marathon.
And on the morning of November l, I stood on the Verrazano Bridge in Staten Island with more than
40,000 0ther runners, waiting for the event to start.
It was unbelievable to have the audience cheering me on, handing me cups of water. And I
crossed the finish line. My friends sprayed(向……喷射)me with beer, as if I'd won the Super Bowl.
And at that moment,I knew: If I set my mind to something, nothing is impossible.

People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this term of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing (批评) and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation (模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact (接触) with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
