2 . In October, I told the eight-year-olds in the religion class I teach in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, about my plan. “I’d like all of you to do extra jobs around the house to earn some money,” I said. “Then we’ll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for someone who might not have a nice dinner otherwise.” I hoped they could experience a sense of their own power to effect change.

Early in Thanksgiving week, they arrived in class with their hand-earned money. And now they couldn’t wait to go shopping. At last we headed toward the checkout, pushing a cart filled with turkey and all the decorations. Then someone spotted a“necessity” that sent them racing a pot of chrysanthemums(菊花).

It was more reasonable to use any extra money to buy food. After all, I pronounced, “You can’t eat flowers”. But the children insisted and placed the purple plant into the cart.

An agency had given us the name and address of a needy grandmother who had lived alone for years. Soon we were arriving at her house. Between the laughing and those purple flowers, I wasn’t sure that any lesson about giving and receiving was getting through.

We finally pulled up in front of a small house in the woods. A woman with a tired face came to the door to welcome us. As my little group carried the boxes of food in, she oohed and aahed - much to her visitors’ pleasure. When Amy put the plant on the counter, the woman seemed surprised. She was wishing it was a bag of flour, I thought. The woman told the children about the animals that lived close by. “I share my food with the birds, ”she said.

We returned to the car. As we fastened our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window The woman inside waved goodbye, then turned and walked across the room, past the turkey, straight to the chrysanthemums. She put her face in the plant. When she raised her head, there was a smile on her lips. The children were quiet. In that one brief moment, they had seen for themselves the power they possessed to make another’s life better.

3 . It was our last class before summer break. I was finishing up the first year of an MFA program in poetry. I was tired and puzzled. "Was I good enough to be in the program?" When a professor asked about our summer plans, I panicked. I didn't want to appear idle(闲散的). "Gardening," I responded immediately. Actually I knew nothing about plants! My professor nodded, saying, "What a good idea, Mari! Emily Dickinson loved gardening." Emily Dickinson had lived in the countryside, studying plants as a child. I was in my late twenties, living in the city without gardening experience.

A few days later, I bought a jalapeño seedling(青辣椒秧苗). At least I could say I'd tried gardening. I watered and changed the dirt for my little plant. I even talked to it. And over the summer, it grew bigger and bigger. I was proud. Maybe I didn't have a black thumb after all.

I started the second year of my MFA, and then it was almost December and my jalapeño was suffering. It was brown in some places; many of its leaves had fallen off. Would my little guy make it? I prayed, "Please be okay." As if its survival were closely linked to mine.

I worked hard in school. Spring came. My jalapeño plant came back to life. It grew bigger, with new leaves. And then it flowered. I handed in my graduate paper--a book of poems--in May. "Your poems are strong," my professor said.

A huge weight lifted. I'd done it! At that time, I found the flowers on my jalapeño plant were gone. I watched closer. Where a flower had been, a tiny green fruit pushed through. I smiled. I had succeeded in my MFA program, and my jalapeño plant had grown right beside me, and I successfully did things I hadn't thought possible.

1. Why did the author begin gardening?
A.Just by accident.
B.For the love for gardening.
C.To express fancy for Emily Dickinson.
D.Because of the reminding of a professor.
2. When did the author begin her first gardening?
A.In her childhood.B.In one of her summer breaks.
C.In her teens.D.In her first year of MFA program.
3. What does the underlined phrase "a black thumb" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.A talent to grow plants.B.A dirty finger to touch plants.
C.A good fortune to do everything.D.An inability to do gardening.
4. Which proverb can best describe the story above?
A.Nothing is impossible to a willing mind.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I was ten, I was suddenly faced with the suffering of moving from the only home I had ever known. My whole life, brief as it was, had been spent in that big old house, gracefully touched with the laughter and tears of four generations.

When the final day came, I ran to the small backyard and sat alone, with tears welling up from my heart.Suddenly I felt a hand rest on my shoulder.I looked up to see my grandfather. “It isn't easy, is it, Billy?” he said softly, sitting down on the steps beside me.

“Grandpa,” I replied through my tears, “how can I ever say goodbye to you and all my friends?”

For a moment he just stared off into the apple trees.   “Goodbye is such a sad word,” he said.“It seems too final, too cold, for friends to use.We seem to have so many ways of saying goodbye and they all have one thing in common: sadness. When you and your friends must part, I want you to reach deep within you and bring back that first hello.Come with me, my friend,” he whispered.

We walked, hand in hand, to his favorite place in the front yard, where a huge red rosebush sat noticeably alone.Kneeling, he pulled me close.“It isn't just the roses that are beautiful, Billy. It's that special place in your heart that makes them so.”

His eyes met mine again.“Billy, I planted these roses a long time ago—before your mother came to the world. I put them into the soil the day my first son was born. It was my way of saying ‘thank you’   to God. That boy's name was Billy, just like yours.I used to watch him pick roses for his mother.” I saw my grandfather's tears.I had never seen him cry before. His voice became hoarse.

6 . Why Gratitude Is Significant

As far as I'm concerned, no matter what you’re going through, there is always a reason to be thankful. But not only that — being thankful might just be exactly what you need to do if you’re going through a tough time.     1

Researchers found that having a grateful attitude helps strengthen one’s immune system, lower blood pressure, improve sleep and motivate people to exercise regularly.     2     Practicing gratitude also has been associated with better quality of life for individuals who struggle with stress, anxiety and depression.

Having gone through a period of depression myself after cancer surgery 10 years ago, I can tell you this illness can be severe.     3     I knew I was in trouble when I couldn’t eat or sleep. It took me well over a year to come out of that dark valley.

During that time I sought forms of treatment for depression, including professional counseling and exercise. One thing recommended to me by a counselor was keeping a gratitude journal.     4     This simple exercise lifts my sight out of the darkness and helps me see the truth around: there are people who love and care for you, there’s purpose in life.

5     In reality, there is no single cure for it. If suffering, you may prefer to seek professional counseling and care. Still, I would encourage you to practice gratitude. Think of a few things you can thank life for. You might be surprised by how significant an effect it can have.

A.Every day, I would set down three things I was thankful for in life.
B.Now I realize depression does not go away by practicing a single exercise.
C.It itself carries a host of health benefits.
D.Being grateful accounts for your recovery.
E.Gratitude is good for your mind, body and soul.
F.Depression makes you feel as if you are dead inside.
G.For example, I would sincerely convey my gratitude loudly.

7 . Have you ever wondered why the world is full of so many people who are incredibly incompetent at the very thing they are paid to do? If so, an educationalist called Laurence J. Peter may have the answer.

In Peter’s view, most people were promoted based on their current performance, with no real consideration of their ability to take on greater responsibility. Eventually, “every employee tends to rise to his or her level of incompetence”, as he wrote. This is the law he termed the“Peter Principle”.

The strongest evidence for the theory comes from a recent study of 131 companies that all used the same performance management software. As you might expect, the team found that the best salesmen or saleswomen were the ones who tended to be promoted. And the study found that managers who used to be very high-performing sales workers tended not to bring significant assistance to their colleagues.

There are lots of potential reasons why this might occur. The personal drive-even aggression-that is needed to promote your own individual sales doesn’t necessarily transform into the interpersonal skills necessary to motivate others, for instance.

In the meantime, knowledge of the “Peter Principle” might be useful for each of us personally. If you frequently find yourself disappointed with your own boss or with your subordinates (下属), it’s worth considering the possibility that you’ve already reached your “level of incompetence”.

That’s not always easy to recognize. As Peter put it, “competence, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder”, but a modest awareness may just encourage you to correct your weaknesses, or to find a new position where your unique talents are of greater value.

1. Which of the following may Peter be in favour of?
A.An able employee may not be in the right place.
B.Employees with higher pay tend to perform better.
C.Whoever performs well in a firm deserves to be promoted.
D.There is no fixed criterion for assessing an employee’s ability.
2. What is the result of the study?
A.The “Peter Principle” makes sense both in companies and schools.
B.The best sales workers have got promoted due to their teamwork spirit.
C.The companies are in need of employees with good communicative skills.
D.Managers, once with good sales performance, may contribute little to others’progress.
3. How does the “Peter Principle” benefit each of us personally?
A.It makes us qualified for a higher position.
B.It reminds us of the importance of learning from others.
C.It inspires us to fulfill ourselves in a suitable position.
D.It provides guidance on how to improve our competence.
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.General Rules in a CompanyB.Reasons for Getting Promoted
C.Knowledge of the “Peter Principle”D.The Development of a Famous Theory
