It was our last class before summer break. I was finishing up the first year of an MFA program in poetry. I was tired and puzzled. "Was I good enough to be in the program?" When a professor asked about our summer plans, I panicked. I didn't want to appear idle(闲散的). "Gardening," I responded immediately. Actually I knew nothing about plants! My professor nodded, saying, "What a good idea, Mari! Emily Dickinson loved gardening." Emily Dickinson had lived in the countryside, studying plants as a child. I was in my late twenties, living in the city without gardening experience.
A few days later, I bought a jalapeño seedling(青辣椒秧苗). At least I could say I'd tried gardening. I watered and changed the dirt for my little plant. I even talked to it. And over the summer, it grew bigger and bigger. I was proud. Maybe I didn't have a black thumb after all.
I started the second year of my MFA, and then it was almost December and my jalapeño was suffering. It was brown in some places; many of its leaves had fallen off. Would my little guy make it? I prayed, "Please be okay." As if its survival were closely linked to mine.
I worked hard in school. Spring came. My jalapeño plant came back to life. It grew bigger, with new leaves. And then it flowered. I handed in my graduate paper--a book of poems--in May. "Your poems are strong," my professor said.
A huge weight lifted. I'd done it! At that time, I found the flowers on my jalapeño plant were gone. I watched closer. Where a flower had been, a tiny green fruit pushed through. I smiled. I had succeeded in my MFA program, and my jalapeño plant had grown right beside me, and I successfully did things I hadn't thought possible.

You didn’t tell me, ‘Look how experienced I am.’ You emailed me and said, ‘I researched your website and saw how many amazing vets (兽医) you have, and I want to learn from them,’ and that’s why I hired you. You showed vulnerability (弱点).”
So, what is vulnerability? For me, vulnerability means putting your fear of embarrassment aside and allowing personal growth. I believe vulnerability is a pathway to success. Vulnerability has traditionally been viewed as a weakness in the workplace. The very thought of exposing your weaknesses is terrifying. However, we can change the views surrounding it.
After graduation, I started working in a clinic where I thought I would have support. However, I didn’t have the help I required. I quickly became exhausted. Within 18 months, I didn’t want to work there anymore.
During this period, I realized without the support I wanted, I was potentially making mistakes I wasn’t even aware of. Was I treating patients effectively? I wouldn’t know, because I had no one to ask or help.
I decided to be vulnerable. I accepted that I was unhappy, living with poor mental health and lacking important knowledge. I wanted to find somewhere I’d be able to continue building my knowledge, not as an average vet, but as a good one. After two and a half years, I have finally found a place where I get the support I need.
My point is: don’t stay where you are unhappy. Be vulnerable and have the courage to accept when you’re unhappy. Find somewhere that will support you and push you to do better. Vulnerability shouldn’t be considered a weakness because it allows personal growth. Being vulnerable is the ability to show people that you are human.

My taxi driver stopped his car at once. The tire made a very loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just one inch from the back of the other car.
I was frightened. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head and started yelling at us. I couldn’t believe it! But my taxi driver just smiled at the guy. So I asked,“Why did you just do that? This guy almost sent us to hospital.”
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, “The Law of the Rubbish Truck.” He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of rubbish, full of anger. As their rubbish piles up, they look for a place to throw it away and sometimes they’ll throw it at you. Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their rubbish and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets.
Successful people never let rubbish trucks change their moods. Life is too short to wake up in the. morning with regrets, so love those who love you and pray for those who don’t.

School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A. That’s no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes.
Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule — wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers; school uniforms tear those barriers down.
As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education.
Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children’s “creativity.” First, as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality. They just copy their classmates. Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they’re in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.
1. In Paragraph 1, the word “benefits” probably means ________ .A.tasks | B.messages | C.advantages | D.differences |

C.they don’t agree that uniforms can remove social barriers |
D.they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniforms |
A.it makes no difference whether to wear school uniforms or not |
B.students’ individuality may not come from school education |
C.students’ creativity is related to the clothes they choose |
D.school uniforms help to create equality among students |

Stop Procrastinating
Procrastinating can mean that you don’t leave yourself enough time to complete your work. Typically, this means you’ll hand in work at the last minute and not perform at your best. For students, procrastination can be a major barrier to success. When you have a study partner, you’ll keep each other accountable. With regular joint study sessions, for example, you’ll be less likely to put off doing your work and achieve better results because of it.
Understanding New Concepts
When you’ re learning now material, things can come to a standstill if you don’t understand the concepts or theory behind it. Fortunately, two heads are better than one. When you can share your ideas and understanding with other people, you can help them advance. Similarly, you can benefit from your friends’ knowledge and insight when you’re struggling to understand a new topic or subject.
Testing Each Other
Tests are an easy and effective way to determine what you know. Of course, it can be difficult to test yourself, and someone who doesn’t know the material might not ask the right questions, which is why a study partner is the perfect person with whom to share tests!
Staying Active
When you become hopeless, it can be hard to concentrate. Due to this, staying active is essential when it comes to getting the grades you’re capable of and reaching your potential. If you have a study partner, you’ll have his or her encouragement and help to rely on.
1. What docs “Procrastinating” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Looking for things. | B.Making up stories. | C.Putting things off. | D.Giving up things. |

C.They can encourage you to study. | D.They can learn from your mistakes. |

The book springs out of editor Elizabeth Benedict’s personal experience. The last gift she received from her mother was a black wool scarf, embroidered (绣花的) at each end with yellow, “pink and blue flowers.” “As soon as I began wearing it, people started commenting on how beautiful it was,” Benedict tells Tell Me More host Michel Martin. “And after she died, I wore it all the time in winter. I was confused by how I could feel this attachment to it.”
Benedict went on to wonder about the experiences of other women. “It is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on what Mom gave me, ” says Muñoz. Muñoz received a wok from her mother, whose relationships with everyone in the family largely related to food. She was a homemaker and accomplished chef. “We didn’t see her as a working woman, because she didn’t like makeups. But she managed it so she could take me to music lessons and take my brothers to debate practice. Being a traditional mom, she managed to do all that,” Muñoz says.
The book includes diverse voices. Benedict says she wanted a real range of experiences so the book would feel like the actual world. The objects are modest: a photograph, quilt, cake pan, plant, even a cracked vase. They are not financially valuable, but the value of these gifts increases over time. The value comes from how people move through their lives with their mothers.

In less time than it takes to tell, a shake, similar to that caused by a nearby explosion (爆炸), shook the building to its bases and it began a series of the most lively movements. Together with a frightening sound, it was followed by big crashes (碰撞) as the neighboring buildings and chimneys fell to the ground.
A few blocks away, in a comfortable room in the Palace Hotel, the world’s greatest singer, Enrico Caruso, was asleep after a good performance at the Opera House the night before. He awoke to find: Everything in the room was going round and round. The light was trying to touch the ceiling and the chairs were all chasing each other. Crash — crash — crash! It was a terrible scene. Everywhere the walls were falling and clouds of yellow dust were rising. My God, I thought it would never stop!
And at the same moment, in another part of the city, Jesse Cook, a policeman, reported: The whole street was undulating (起伏波动). It was as if the waves of the ocean were coming toward me, and waving as they came.
It was, of course, an earthquake, one of the largest ever to hit North America, and the first of 27 separate quakes that day. The first shock — at 5:12:05 a.m. — lasted more than 40 seconds. Sirine has a rare condition that left her completely blind by the times she was 10 years old. While her parents and doctors have tried to find treatments for her, there isn’t much they can do. “I couldn’t fit into my regular size six,” recalls Rudes Sandel, who had to go three sizes bigger to find a pair that fit. “They were uncomfortable, and they felt like they would fall down. I wondered, ‘Why isn’t someone making nice jeans for women with a figure like mine?’” Like many entrepreneurs, Rudes Sandel turned her complaint into a business opportunity. The founder of Not Your Daughter’s Jeans (NYDJ) has created a multimillion-dollar business simply by designing jeans for women with womanly bodies.
Since its launch (开业) seven years ago, NYDJ has become the largest manufacturer of women’s jeans under $100 in America. The company ships more than 40,000 pairs per week to 2,000 stores and 20 countries, from Australia to Canada. Not bad for a girl who dreamed of becoming a plastic surgeon- until she took a biology course at UCLA.
With only an idea and very little money, Rudes Sandel and her sister, Leslie, called on the family for help. Even with the family’s connections, NYDJ had growing pains. “Fabric sellers would only give us seven days to pay them,” she says. “We had to pick up small orders ourselves because they wouldn’t drop them off. We had to prove ourselves at every point.” But gradually, they did. They started with old-fashioned word of mouth, then took out newspaper ads, landed the Good Housekeeping Seal, and hired a PR (public relations) firm to really make NYDJ a big-name company. “Today,” says Rudes Sandel, “my biggest problem is I can’t ship fast enough.” That’s a problem any entrepreneur would love to have.
“The truth is,” Rudes Sandel says, “I’ve never forgotten that woman I’ve been aiming for since day one.” She addresses herself jokingly in a note attached to every pair of jeans: “NYDJ cannot be held responsible for any positive consequence that may arise due to your attractive appearance when wearing our jeans. You can thank me later.”
