The morning of my daughter’s first school play I had an important business meeting. I went to the play, getting a seat in the front row. I even brought my mum along in case it overran. But, not wanting to be late for my appointment, I moved quietly to the back. My daughter, who was just three at the time, noticed my empty seat and started to cry. Outside the doorway, I heard one mum say loudly and angrily, “She’s gone to work.” I watched as some of the others rolled their eyes. My stomach went cold.
It’s OK for a mum to have a job — as long as it’s part-time, fits around the school run or means she doesn’t have to leave the school play early or fly to the other side of the world now and again to earn a living. During the decade I’ve been a working mum I’ve received numerous critical comments from women about my work choices, but I think running my own business and travelling with my work when I can (while still taking my daughter to school most days and making pretty much every show or event) is setting a good example to my daughter. It shows her that it is possible to succeed at a time when women in many professions find it harder than men to reach the top and get less pay.
But I often feel I’ m in the minority. Do the women who roll their eyes at other women who leave the school play early or show up late to parents’ evening because their meetings overrun really believe females should only be in part-time, flexible work that fits around their children? I think it’s time for women to support each other’s career decisions.

7 . As I did not have a boyfriend, I decided to treat myself on Valentine’s Day. I was on my way to the supermarket when I saw an old man. He had a walking stick and could only walk a few steps before he tired. He tried to hold a tree and almost fell down. I went to him and offered to take him home.
He had a few other items to collect in the town centre, so I went with him. We went to the chemist’s to buy some medicine, then to a food store where he only picked up two items. Total time with him was about half an hour. I was quite certain that if he’d been doing it all alone, he would have spent two hours or more.
He was in his late 80’s and was called Sid. Sid had “Rose” tattooed (纹) on his finger, his wife’s name. She died 2 years ago. I learned that Sid was alone now. He once had two sons: one died a few weeks after he was born, and the other died with a heart problem. Sid volunteered all his information as we walked back to my car for me to drive him home. I couldn’t imagine his heartbreak.
When we arrived at Sid’s home, he gave me a big hug and thanked me. He told me not to worry about him and he believed tomorrow would be better. I was glad that I met Sid today. Helping Sid made me learn a lot. I no longer felt a need to treat myself to roses in the supermarket. I had already been gifted by the old man.

8 . As a small child, I spent a month in the children’s hospital because of my burnt hands. I remember it as a surprisingly happy and bright place. It was almost 11 years ago, but I can recall much about my experience there.
After many years of having to deal with people asking me what happened to my hands, I got fairly used to it. What I couldn’t bear was those who did not ask. They thought they were being polite, but just stared. In fact it’s really a very simple story.
September. At my cottage. When I was 4. Those are the three facts that set the base for the story.
Typically, when people ask, I tell them the story my mother gives about her rushing to pull me from the campfire and quickly putting me into the water, calling 911 and my grandma, who was a nurse, and then rushing me off to hospital. My father had to wait behind with my 2-year-old brother. This is the logical story to give because it provides the most information, and makes the most sense.
Immediately after the accident, the questions never seemed to end. At first, it was very stressful for me to have to explain to everyone what had happened, because I was a young and shy girl who just wanted to keep her burned hands to herself. But after some time, I gradually realized that I was over-thinking it and that it really wasn’t such a big deal.
Now going into my fourth year of high school. I never hesitate to tell people my story whether they ask or stare. I do it because I’ve realized that I don’t if I have to explain what happened a million more times it’s a part of my life, so there’s no sense in feeling uncomfortable with others over it.
The whole experience has made me a lot less shy and more courageous.

9 . Once there was a king who had given his daughter a beautiful diamond necklace. However, the necklace was stolen. Some said a bird might have taken it. The king then asked all his people to search for it. And he put up a reward of£50,000 for anyone who found it.
One day, a man was walking along a river. Suddenly, he saw something shiny in the river. He thought that it might be the diamond necklace. So he decided to get it so that he could get the reward. He put his hand into the dirty river and tried to grab the necklace, but somehow he missed it. Having taken his hand out, he saw that the necklace was still there. Then he walked into the river and put his arm in to grab the necklace. He still missed it!
He came out and decided to walk away. Just when he was about to leave, he saw the necklace again. This time, he jumped into the river and searched everywhere, yet he failed to find the necklace. He came out, puzzled.
Then a wise man saw him and asked him what had happened. The man told him nothing, thinking he might take the necklace for himself. Nevertheless, the wise man could see that he was in search of something. He asked him again, and promised that he wouldn’t tell anyone. After hearing this, the man told the wise man about the necklace and how he had tried to grab it, but kept failing. The wise man then told him that perhaps he should look up, towards the branches of a tree. The man raised his head, only to see the necklace on a branch of the tree.
