Many people think that money brings happiness. However, according to Professor Michael Argyle, this is not true. In Britain, we are     1     (rich) but unhappier than fifty years   ago. The USA is the richest country in the world but Americans are not the happiest people in the world.

Professor Argyle has found that very poor people and very rich people are unhappier than those in between. For example, very poor people in     2    developing world live in overcrowded houses without any running water and     3    no electricity. However, there are many millionaires (百万富翁) with     4     (person) problems. A lot of young people     5    get rich very quickly are at risk.

Because of this, a few young millionaires are changing their life styles. Richard Cross, a multi-millionaire computer analyst ( 分 析 师 ) from California is an example. His house     6     (show) no signs of his wealth. There is a small garden   and there only two   cars     7     (park) outside the house. “I want my kids     8     (live) a normal life,” says Richard.

So what can make     9     (we) happy? According to Professor Argyle, you should have one close relationship and some close     10     (friend). You should do a little sport and have a lot of contact (联系) with other people. Other people make you happy, not money!

4 . I have a strong faith that the pain is almost gone but the feeling of success will stay forever. I was among the 38,000 runners who participated in the marathon (马拉松赛跑), the largest event of its kind in Asia.

My decision to participate in the marathon was because of the insistence of my wife, who had run the half-marathon previously. This year, she wanted me to participate along with her. Unexpectedly, her application got rejected while mine got accepted.

Though I had been into fitness training before, it seemed to be a daunting task to run 21 km. I started training about 10 weeks before the day. I had made up my mind to finish the run. So I tried my best to accommodate training into my busy schedule whenever I could.

What’s more, I remembered that four weeks into my training, my shoes were worn. I searched and hunted and literally spent a fortune on a new pair of shoes. However, right on the first day of running with them, I felt that they were not for me. I preserved, thinking that my discomfort was because the shoes were new. Eventually, I gave up on them. I even tried looking for another new pair of shoes, but couldn’t find that were as comfortable as my old ones.

Finally, on 16th January 2011, I ran and completed the half-marathon. And I did it in my old shoes.

Now, when I think about it, it all seems so easy. All I had to do was to picture completing the run in good time in my mind.

What I have learned from the experience is that completing a marathon is like any other goal in life — largely a mind-over-matter phenomenon. In other words, unless you believe you can reach your goal, you’ve lost even before you begin. No doubt, factors such as hard work, experience and talent help to a greater or lesser degree. But without your belief that you will get there, every goal remains difficult to achieve.

1. Why did the writer participate in the marathon at first?
A.It was the largest event of its kind.
B.He had run the half-marathon previously.
C.His wife insisted on him participating.
D.He had been training for a long time.
2. What can we learn from the text?
A.The writer was the best among all the runners.
B.The writer tried his best to do some marathon training.
C.The writer’s fitness training before was only a little help to him in the run.
D.The writer’s old shoes were very expensive.
3. The writer says completing a marathon is like “a mind-over-matter phenomenon” because_______.
A.self-confidence is the primary factor in a marathon.
B.to win a marathon depends on your mind, not on your shoes
C.it would be easy if you made up your mind to begin it
D.belief can bring you success in a marathon
4. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Practice Makes Perfect.B.Insist on Your Decision
C.The Pain before SuccessD.A Running Lesson

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者通过桑迪和室友相互帮助的故事告诉我们生命的意义在于用我们的生命给他人带来影响。

5 . There is a man who I’d like to tell you about. His name is Sandy Greenberg. Sandy was a very good student, but he came from a poor family. And so he went to Columbia University, but while there, he became blind.

But something else happened to Sandy that may surprise you. Sandy said that when he lost his sight, his roommate would read his textbooks to him, every night. As a result, Sandy went on to graduate. He got a scholarship, and he went off to study at Oxford.

One day, Sandy got a call at Oxford, and his former roommate said, “Sandy, I’m really unhappy. I really don’t like being in graduate school, and I don’t want to do this.”

So Sandy asked, “Well, what do you want to do?”

And his roommate told him, “Sandy, I really love to sing. I have a high school friend who plays the guitar. And we would really like to try the music business. But we need to make a record, and in order to do that I need $500.”

So Sandy Greenberg told me he took all his life savings and sent it to his roommate. He told me, “You know, what else could I do? He made my life; I needed to help make his life.”

I almost forgot. You probably are wanting to know who Sandy’s roommate was. I think you’ve heard of him. Sandy’s roommate was a fellow by the name of Art Garfunkel, and he teamed up with another musician by the name of Paul Simon. That $500 helped them make a record that eventually became “The Sound of Silence.”

I hope you’ll remember the power of doing well by doing good. Each of you, in your own lives, will be faced with challenges and problems that you didn’t expect. How you are able to deal with adversity will be influenced by how you deal with others along the way. What you get will depend a lot on what you give. And that’s the end of the story of doing well, by doing good.

More importantly, when you get to be my age, you will find yourself beginning to ask, did my life make a difference? I think the only way to face this question is to consider, every day of your life: How can I do something for somebody else? How can I give back to others? It may be teaching, it may be becoming a doctor, you may be successful in business — no matter what your career path, there will always be the opportunity to give back. The chance will present itself to give your time, give your money, but mostly, to give your own heart and soul.

A.Sandy had a difficult time at Oxford
B.Sandy and his roommate both went on studying after their graduation

A.to encourage us to face difficulties bravely
B.to tell us to change our path in life if we want to
C.to show that disabled people can succeed with help
D.to tell us that by helping others, we can also help ourselves
4. The underlined word ‘adversity’ in Paragraph 8 is closest in meaning to ____________.

文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章主要讲述本来懒散的大学生因为一次暑假作蓝领工人的工作机会意识到要珍惜自己能接受大学教育的机会,自己的生活和蓝领工人的生活有很大的差距。

6 . I’ve worked in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer since I graduated from high school, but making the transition between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be uncivilized, getting to a factory by 6 o’clock each morning is torture. My friends never seem to understand why I’m so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.

There’re few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real world. People of my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.

The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear overnight. Issues like downsizing and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.

After working 12-hour shifts in a factory, the other options have become only too clear. When I’m back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seems too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale (老掉牙的) now ring true.

These lessons I’m learning, however valuable, are always tinged (带有) with sense of guilt. Many people pass their lives in the places I briefly work, spending 30 years where I spend only two months at a time. “This job pays well, but it’s hell on the body,” said one co-worker. “Study hard and keep reading,” she added.

My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.

1. Which of the following is closest to the underlined word “torture” in the first paragraph?
A.MiseryB.FortuneC.AnxietyD.Availability
2. What does the author say about college students?
A.They expect too much from the real world.B.They have little interest in blue-collar life.
C.They think too highly of themselves.D.They are confident of their future.
3. What, according to the author, is most frustrating for blue-collar workers?
A.They do not get decent pay.B.They do not have job security.
C.They have to work 12-hour shifts.D.They have to move from place to place.
4. In what important way has the author’s work experience changed him?
A.He learned to be more practical.B.He acquired a sense of urgency.
C.He came to respect blue-collar workers.D.He came to appreciate his college education.
5. Why does the author feel somewhat guilty?
A.He realizes there is a great divide between his life and that of blue-collar workers.
B.He looks down upon the mechanical work at the assembly life.
C.He has not done much to help his co-workers at the factory.
D.He has stayed at school just for the purpose of escaping from the real world.

7 . One of the biggest complaints in modern society is being over-scheduled. Ask people how they are and the answer usually is “super busy,” “crazy busy”. _________ is just “fine” any more.

When people aren’t super busy at work, they are crazy busy exercising, entertaining or parenting. And if there is ever a still moment for thoughts--for example, while waiting _________ at the supermarket or sitting in traffic—out come the mobile phones. So it’s worth noting a study published last month in Science, which shows how _________ people will go to avoid the examination for our thoughts.

“We had noted that we are so dependent on our mobile phones that people seem to find any _________ they can to keep busy,” said Timothy Wilson, a psychology professor at the University of Virginia. In his experiments involving 700 people, the majority found it _________ to be alone with their thoughts for just 6 to 15 minutes.

It could be because human beings, as problem solvers and meaning makers, when _________, tend to think about what’s wrong in their lives. When we aren’t _________ our Facebook page, the things we haven’t figured out appear in our minds—_________ relationships, professional failures, health concerns, etc. Unless there is a solution, these thoughts just repeat themselves in our heads.

But you can’t solve problems _________ you don’t allow yourself time to think about them. It has actually been __________ by our culture, which values doing more than thinking and believes answers are in your hand __________ in your head. “We all feel that busyness is normal but it’s really harmful,” said Timothy. “There’s a widespread belief that thinking will only slow you down and get __________, but it’s the opposite.” __________ negative feelings only makes them more powerful, he said. Allowing and tolerating the flow of thoughts is part of the solution itself, such as meditation(冥想).

Negative feelings are sometimes hard, but they are part of everyone’s life, especially if you are busy. It is those deep and troubling feelings, and how you __________ them, that make you who you are. While busyness may seem to prevent the flow of sadness, it may also limit your ability to be filled with __________.

What on earth does happiness mean? I can’t give you its exact definition, but I’m sure if you love and help others you’ll get it.

I’ll never forget an old lady. She lives in    1    small house alone. It is said that her husband and her son    2    (die) in a road accident years ago. Her life is bitter, but she often helps others     3    a smile. Whenever it snows, she is always the first    4    (clean) the paths. She looks after several children living nearby. I am one of them. I often remember the stories she told us and her kind smile. Perhaps she is unlucky, but I think she is a happy person. Her life is full of    5       (laugh) and love.

But I’m sad to see some people getting their happiness in bad ways. They talk    6    (noisy) in cinemas and meeting rooms; they destroy trees to enjoy themselves and they laugh at others shortcomings. Perhaps they feel happy at that time,    7     they will never get true happiness because they    8    (lose) their personality already.

Now I know what happiness is.    9    means kindness, love and unselfishness. Above all, I have come to understand that    10    (bring) happiness to others is getting ourselves happiness.

Tomato Changed My Life

Doing things-without being planned was never my strength.

As a 14-year-old, I would refuse to go for walks around the block with my friends if I was the least bit behind in my schoolwork.

Unlike most teenagers, I lived not in my room, but in an unused kitchen upstairs where I spread my books and papers on a large round table. I spent considerable time there, working continuously for hours, and my mother worried. She would try to lure (引诱) me away. “Come and watch the parade!” she would call from downstairs. “All neighbors are out there!” She thought of all kinds of tricks-the swimming pool, ice cream, stray cats and turtles-to remove me from my -studies, but nothing ever worked.

Later, in college, the pattern continued. The library and my college dorm replaced the unused kitchen at home. When spring came along friends would stop by my dorm or peer into my library room to persuade me to play Frisbee on the lawn. “No, I would almost always say.” I have too much to do.

My college study days were gone, but not my need and love for schedules. My friends and sisters tried to keep me away from my plans, but they were hardly ever successful.

This summer, though, while house sitting for my parents, I was persuaded to change my plans in the most unexpected way. The sight of tomatoes growing in my mother’s garden lured me out of my tightly scheduled world. They drew me with the power of a lover’s gaze. Hundreds of them were turning ripe and red by the minute, decorating the garden like decorations on a Christmas tree.

“If I have time, I’ll make tomato sauce (番茄酱).” I told myself. But my long week in the house by myself was already filled with things to do: writing, and finishing a project that I brought home from the office.

Then, watching the fascinating tomatoes continuously falling to the ground in ever-greater numbers, again I mentally argued about all the things I had planned and needed to do.
