4 . Many years ago, I went to watch a dance show with my five-year-old son Tim. The dance was presented by the San Francisco Ballet company.    1     Throughout it, he had his eyes fixed on the dancers. And later, he expressed an interest in learning to dance.

2     His classmate who lived next door laughed, “Come on, Tim! There are no boys in my dance classes!” Moreover, some of our family members and his friends had the same attitude. They often discouraged him. “Look, Tim! In our town, no boys wear dance shoes,” they reminded him.

I gave in to other people’s views and prevented his dream. Dance lessons were put on hold. I let him take baseball classes.    3     After he gave up baseball, I asked him to try swimming lessons, the science camp, etc. But he never lost interest in learning to dance. As time went on, this interest even became stronger.

Finally, Tim got to have his dance lessons during high school. His goal was to try out for the school’s dance group which was well-known nationwide. The competition to join it was fierce (激烈的). Tim tried to spare time to practice dancing in an organization that welcomed male dancers. At last, his hard work paid off.    4

I was proud of my son’s talent. And I regretted that I hadn’t been open-minded and hadn’t supported his interest and dream earlier. After graduation, he asked whether he could continue learning to dance in college. I agreed without hesitation (犹豫). Years later, Tim became a famous dancer.     5     Just stick to your dream and make efforts to make it come true.

B.Tim was so attracted by the dancers’ performance.
C.Later, he even stood out in his school’s dance group.
D.So it’s okay to be different and never get discouraged.
E.However, he paid little attention to the coach’s guidance.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者与上帝之间的对话,借此指出人们错误的人生态度,给出中肯的人生建议。

5 . Interview With God

I dreamed I had an interview with God. “So you would like to interview me?” God asked. “If you have the time,” I said. “My time is eternity.” God smiled, “what questions do you have in mind for me?” “What surprises you most about humankind?” God answered, “That they get bored with childhood; they rush to grow up, and then long to be children again. That they lose their health to make money... and then lose their money to restore their health. That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live in neither the present nor the future. That they live as if they will never die, and die as though they had never lived.” God’s hand took mine and we were silent for a while. And then I asked, “As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons you want your children to learn? To learn they cannot make anyone love them. All they can do is to let themselves be loved. To learn that it is not good   to compare themselves to others. To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness. To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in those they love, and it can take many years to heal them. To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least. To learn that there are people who love them dearly, but simply have not yet learned how to express or show their feelings. To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently. To learn that it is not enough that they forgive one another, but they must also forgive themselves.” “Thank you for your time,” I said humbly. “Is there anything else you would like your children to know?” God smiled and said; “Just know that I am here always.”

文章大意:本文是夹叙夹议文。文章主要介绍商学院教授史密斯先生的令人难忘的回顾方式,并从中受益匪浅。

7 . Mr. Smith, the professor at my business class, had a unique way of going over the answers to our weekly tests. For each question, he would ask a random student for their answer and then continue to grill(盘问追问) him/her, forcing him/her to defend that answer. It was certainly a memorable way to review. How I wished I’d been a more experienced student and got used to the professor’s grilling! I wasn’t, though.

But in my anatomy class, Dr. Cuddy introduced “high power” and “low power” body positions, saying “high power” positions involve taking up much space and making yourself look big, while “low power” poses, in contrast, involve making yourself look small, keeping your arms and legs crossed and held close. People tend to see others with high power poses as natural leaders, and are more willing to hire them. Her research finding was that spending just two minutes standing in a high power pose increased a person’s feeling of power and self-confidence. She wanted us to try it out.

On my next quiz-review day, instead of bending over my book studying quietly, I sat up straight and spread out my books and notebooks on the entire surface of my desk. When our teacher asked if anyone had any questions about the material before we began our quiz review, I raised my hand.

The effect was surprising. My professor answered my question as if talking to a colleague, and I had a wonderful feeling of calm. Suddenly, I realized that the important thing was that I was participating. I just needed to engage fully in the class and learn.

Today, before a presentation or a test, I spend a few minutes “thinking big”-taking up space and being seen. It calms me down and when I do, my best always turns out to be pretty good.

1. How did the author perform in his business class?
A.He was good at defending his answer.
B.He had difficulty getting used to the professor.
C.He did good memorization for his weekly tests.
D.He felt confident to question against the teacher.
2. What did Dr. Cuddy want her students to try out?
A.Keeping their arms crossed at a talk.
B.Keeping their desks clean in class.
C.Using low-power poses in class.
D.Taking a high-power pose briefly.
3. What will the author spend time doing before a test?
A.Discussing the content with his classmates.
B.Going over his lessons without being seen.
C.Making himself look big and get noticed.
D.Collecting things on his desk to make it clean.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards “thinking big”?
A.Favorable.
B.Doubtful.
C.Critical.
D.Indifferent.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My daughter Marissa loves to dance and is quite a good dancer. She inherited her dancing ability from my wife Angela.

Angela encouraged Marissa to dance from a very early age. I recall fondly how she would swing our daughter around the living room over and over to the song “Dancing Queen”. The two of them filled our living room with laughter and joy each time they danced together. Because of that, our daughter has always loved all types of dance, and she took classes in Irish dance, hip-hop, jazz and more.

I love music, and I will dance occasionally, but my dancing is awful! Every time I try to dance, two things get in the way: my feet.

A couple of years ago, Marissa was a bridesmaid in a wedding that my wife and I attended. It was a beautiful wedding on a bright spring day. At the reception, my daughter was dancing away. I was sitting at a table minding my own business when she talked me into dancing with her. That means she begged me to get off my chair and out on the dance floor.

When we got out on the floor, the DJ’s music took over my body. The problem was that it missed my hips and feet. I tried my best. As I began moving to the beat, I gave myself a silent encouraging talk. I thought of that famous phrase: Dance like no one is watching. That didn’t work! Everyone was watching. My brother-in-law was laughing so hard that I thought he would fall off his chair.

I tried my best to keep up with my daughter’s moves. Unfortunately, I was always at least two steps behind. She was performing a move, and I was just a fool! Her “Hips Don’t Lie”, and my hips didn’t even know what to say. If she was the dancing queen, then I would have been the court jester (小丑). I think you get the picture.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章通过作者逃避噪音,寻求安静的过程,告诉读者内心平静的时刻使人们的生活更美好。

9 . My quest started when I was on the New York subway. Some children were whining. Four trains came screaming into the station at once. I put my hands over my ears and cowered (蜷缩) — the noise was deafening. In cities, the ever-present dull background roar of planes, cars, machinery and voices is a fact of life. There is no escape from it and it was beginning to drive me mad.

In an attempt to recapture some peace, I decided to go on a mission to find the quietest place on Earth to discover whether absolute silence exists. The one place I was most excited about visiting was an anechoic chamber (消声室) in Minnesota.

Ironically, far from being peaceful, most people find its perfect quiet upsetting. And yet I booked a 45-minute session—no one had managed to stay in for that long before. When the heavy door shut behind me, I was plunged into darkness — all lights were turned off because they could also make a noise.

For the first few seconds, being in such a quiet place felt like heaven, a remedy for my unsettled nerves. Then, after a minute or two, I became aware of the sound of my breathing. As the minutes ticked by, the beat of my heart became apparent. Then I heard a strange, metallic scraping noise. Was I hallucinating? The feeling of peace was spoiled by a sensation of disappointment — this place wasn’t quiet at all.

Then I stopped obsessing about what bodily functions I could hear and began to enjoy it. I didn’t feel afraid and came out only because my time was up. Everyone was impressed that I’d beaten the record, but having spent so long searching for quiet, I was comfortable with the feeling of absolute stillness. Afterward, I felt wonderfully rested and calm.

My desire for silence changed my life. I found making space for moments of quiet in my day is the key to happiness. If you can occasionally become master of your own sound environment — from turning off the phone to taking a trip to the countryside, you’ll become a lot more accepting of the noises of everyday life.

1. What pushed the author to seek a change?
A.The annoying kids.B.Loud chats in stations.
C.The roar of subway.D.Endless noises in daily life.
2. Why did the author pick the anechoic chamber in Minnesota?
A.It might give perfect silence.B.It launched a time challenge.
C.It offered professional guidance.D.It was the only one of its kind.
3. What happened when the author was in the anechoic chamber?
A.He started talking to himself.B.He heard sounds from the outside.
C.He made some mental adjustments.D.He felt scared in the first few minutes.
4. What message does the text convey?
A.Noises stop us from making progress.B.Moments of inner quiet better our lives.
C.We should bravely overcome our fears.D.A state of peace and calm is hard to attain.
