1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a sunny summer weekend, little Sam, accompanied by his parents, left the noisy city for the peaceful countryside. They drove through green meadows and clear streams. In the afternoon, their journey brought them to a charming lake where they encountered a weathered man who introduced himself as Ben, Ben sat calmly by the water with his fishing rod(鱼竿) leaning on a nearby rock.

Sam’s eyes had been fixed on the bobber(浮漂) floating on the water’s surface since their arrival. His fascination with nature had always driven him to ask questions and seek out new adventures.“Uncle Ben, are you fishing? Have you caught a fish?” he asked, his curiosity bubbling over.

A warm smile spread Ben’s face as he regarded the young boy’s eager expression. “ Indeed, I am, young man, “he replied, “but as for catching a fish, well, that’s a story yet to be told.”

Observing their son express his curiosity and effortlessly strike up a conversation with Ben, Sam’s parents exchanged warm, knowing smiles. They realized that this chance encounter with Ben could lead to some valuable lessons.

“Can you teach me how to fish?” asked Sam, his voice filled with enthusiasm. “Well, young man,” Ben replied, “fishing is more than just catching fish. It’s about patience and embracing the wait. If you’re willing to learn, I’d be happy to teach you.”

With that, Ben reached for another fishing rod and invited Sam to join him. He demonstrated how to cast the line into the lake, hold the fishing rod steady, and patiently await a curious fish to take the bait. He then showed Sam how to respond when the bobber moved. Charmed by the graceful art of fishing, Sam couldn’t wait to give it a try. As he sat down beside Uncle Ben, he appeared as calm and relaxed as the skilled fisherman. Sam’s parents watched with keen interest.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was nineteen years old the first time I saw my own true character. At least I can say that my true character changed that day.

For about a year, my voyage to and from work each day included a ten-minute walk through the heart of downtown Toronto. As with most large cities, the homeless population of Toronto often gathered on down-town corners, asking pedestrians (行人) for their spare change. Like most busy citizens, I learned to ignore the nameless faces who begged me for money each day. In my eyes, they are on the streets because they choose to be.

I remember how particularly cold the weather had been that day. I passed the usual crowd of homeless beggars, ignored all of them, and continued walking. As I crossed an intersection (交叉路口), I saw him sitting against a building, holding a white cup in front of him. I heard his shaky voice target me as I sped past him.

“Spare some change?” he asked.

I didn’t even bother looking up at his nameless face. “I have no money on me,” I said quickly.

Looking back now, I feel as though fate had set out that day to teach me a lesson. Just a few feet past him, I slipped on the icy road. I lay on the ground for several moments wondering if I had broken my leg. Then I heard a familiar voice only inches above me.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

I knew immediately that this was the man I had just rushed past. I saw the smooth, sympathetic look in his eyes.

I held his hand as I struggled to get to my feet. He held my arm as I hobbled (跛行) to the nearby bus stop. The pain in my leg told me that I needed an X-ray.

“My name is Mike,” he said. “You really shouldn’t try walking on that leg. You really need to get it checked by a doctor,” he said with deep concern.

“This bus goes past the hospital,” I said quickly, pointing to the bus sign above me.

Mike paused and a sudden look of realization crossed his face.

4 . You see people making big life changes, like going to medical school at 45, because they couldn't imagine being an accountant (会计师) for 20 more years. It seems magical, like one day they just decided to make it happen. For some people, it might work that way.     1     In truth, it takes years of thinking and planning. I’ve figured out how to streamline things a bit. You may want to try it yourself.

First, accept the uncertainty of life. As much as we don’t like to admit it, life is uncertain.     2       If you doubt me, go back 10 years and ask yourself where you thought you'd be now. I doubt it looks exactly like you planned.

Second, be open to possibilities. Many times, we know we want to do something, but we don't know what “it” is. Explore a bit. Brainstorm.     3

Then, once you decide on something, it's time to plan a bit.     4     As you meet different difficulties, make sure you spend time questioning your assumptions (设想). Maybe something you always considered true is nothing more than someone else's opinion.

Finally, as paths (路线) open, head down them. Don’t worry if you experience false starts.     5       Almost all of the stories readers shared with me about doing life-changing things involved changing plans, disappointment and lots of hard work. But in the end, it was worth it.

A.That might seem a bit obvious.
B.At this point, difficulties start to show up.
C.We never know exactly where it will take us.
D.It stops you from just making big life changes.
E.However, most of the time, it's much less magical.
F.Allow things to come up and be open to new ideas.
G.There will be plenty of those, and you may only need a quick course correction.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章作者通过自己童年的经历告诉我们童年的好奇心会激发我们去探索日益复杂的工程世界,并引导我们更好地理解世界的组成部分。

5 . When I was about five years old, I was living with my parents in New York. It was the 1980s and one day I sat in front of my favourite lunchbox. This one held my huge collection of crayons (蜡笔). Like most children, I was curious and I wanted to “discover” what was inside my crayons. So I broke them in two. I was rather disappointed to find nothing but more crayon inside of them. Growing up, I saw my television taken apart to see the parts inside. In fact, my childhood interest in the building blocks (构成要素) of things led me to pursue a career in engineering.

I realized that inside all of the human-made things in the world around us are fundamental building blocks. Without them our complex machinery wouldn’t exist.

It is this idea that inspired my book, one in which I have selected what I believe to be the seven core elements that form the basis of the modern world: the nail, the wheel, the spring, the magnet (磁铁), the lens, the pump (泵) and string. Together they have a vast range of innovations. They have created and changed our technology and our history, society, communication, transportation, arts and culture.

I-selected these seven objects during the first 2020 lockdown. Trapped at home, I let my mind wander freely while looking around at my possessions dismantling them to see what lay inside each of them. For example, the speaker on my phone through which I could hear the voices of my family and friends relied on a magnet. Even as I thought about larger and more complex objects-skyscrapers, tunnels, satellites and so on, I came back to the same seven basic innovations.

Look around yourself and ask questions about what you see: reignite (重新燃起) that childhood curiosity. Hopefully, this will inspire you to investigate the increasingly complicated world of engineering, and is something which will lead you to form a better understanding of the building blocks of our world.

1. Why did the author share his childhood experience in the beginning?
A.To explain how his hobby formed.B.To introduce the topic of this passage.
C.To refresh his happy memory when young.D.To advise readers to follow his example.
2. What can we learn about the seven elements?
A.They didn’t come along until 2020.
B.They set people free during the lockdown.
C.They were only applied in our daily items.
D.They are the necessary and crucial parts of machinery.
3. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “dismantling” in Paragraph 4?
A.Separating things into small parts.
B.Observing things with certain tools.
C.Creating something new with building blocks.
D.Finding new ways of communication with a new device.
4. What is the main idea of this article?
A.Perseverance leads to victory.B.Failure is the mother of success.
C.Small things matter in our daily life.D.Engineering dream should start young.

9 . Patience is something that many of us struggle with. I know that I am certainly one who has a hard time dealing with delays. After all, we live in a world of instant satisfaction and overnight shipping. We can have anything that we want delivered to our doorstep right away. We can pick from a variety of entertainment options at any given moment.    1

The truth of the matter is, however, that anything good rarely happens quickly.    2     You have to develop your patience over time by taking real action. This applies to a number of things: launching a business, waiting to go to an event, or striving to achieve your personal goals.

Here are a few tips to help you become more patient:

Make yourself wait on things. This can include eating, purchasing items, or taking any sort of action.    3     It will help you increase your current patience levels and become less anxious moving forward. Try it.

4     Sometimes pause actually means there is hope. Perhaps you’ll meet a lot of wonderful people while waiting in line, or you will find that something put off is actually better in the future.

Understand that life is full of delays.    5     If there were delays, we would all have to accept. Ups and downs are what build character, and often, the longer we wait, the more we enjoy it. So wait it out with the best of them.

10 . You Are a Better Person Than You Think You Are

Maybe you haven’t achieved goals in a self-appointed time frame.     1     But this doesn’t mean you are a bad person or a failure. You could indeed be a wonderful individual. You could actually be a much better person than you believe you are. So, let’s examine the idea that you might be better than you think.

You show kindness

Being polite and kind is the mark of a good person. When you do this, you are treating others like you would want to be treated.     2     Even the smallest of things do not go unnoticed and are traits that you have a good heart.

You are a positive person

Keeping an optimistic attitude is also a trait of a good person with a powerful character. It is easy to become negative with all the bad things going on in the world, but there’s another way to look at these things. When you’re actually better than you think, you will have the habit of looking on the bright side of every situation and seeing the best in everyone.     3

    4

Being wise is not about being intelligent. It’s about learning from life experiences. Why does this make you a better person than you think? Wisdom can be passed to others to help them avoid the same mistakes you made. You are a good person if you’ve collected wisdom and love to share lessons with others.

So, go easy on yourself. Appreciate who you are. If there are things you need to change, that’s okay.     5     It’s about our attitude and our heart. I bet, if you took the time to read this, you are a better person than you think.
