文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了英国剑桥大学城的有关信息。

1 . Last July, I visited Cambridge, a historical university town in England. It is well known that Cambridge University is one of the best universities in the world, but few people know its unique university system. The trip made me know more about the school. It turned out so different from what I had expected!

At Cambridge, there are 31 colleges. These colleges are places where students live, enjoy entertainment, study at libraries and use leisure equipment. Once you enter a college, it becomes your community. Each college is different in terms of places, equipment and atmosphere (氛围). This is why, when applying to Cambridge, applicants (申请人) take great care to choose the right college for themselves. Sometimes, it is just a matter of whether it “feels right” for you.

I also had the chance to visit their Museum of Classical Archaeology (考古学). For someone who is crazy about classics (经典), Cambridge is the perfect place to come and learn from their museums. Classics have been interesting me since I was a kid, and I have developed a deep love for Greek mythology (神话) in comic books. In most museums that Cambridge has, it is easy to find exhibits (展品) that enable you to gain knowledge in any area of interest. There is a museum for almost everything you can think of, including earth sciences, art and — of course — classics.

If you ever have the chance to visit Cambridge, I would suggest visiting their museums as part of your trip. Not only would you be able to immerse yourself in the studying atmosphere, but you could enjoy the wonderful exhibits each museum offers.

1. How did the writer learn more about Cambridge University according to the passage?
A.By reading books.B.By visiting it.

A.Students have different interests.B.Not all colleges are open to them.
C.The colleges are similar to each other.D.Each college is different in its own way.
3. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The writer’s deep interest in classics.
B.The great advantages of visiting Cambridge’s museums.
C.The large collection of exhibits in Cambridge’s museums.
D.The writer’s visit to the Museum of Classical Archaeology.
4. Which of the following words can be used to replace the underlined word “immerse” in the last paragraph?
A.Put.B.Teach.C.Value.D.Dress.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了Summerhill School学校,包括其位置、特色、历史和办学理念等。

3 . Summerhill School

If you travel 140 kilometers north of London to England’s east coast, you’ll find an unusual boarding school called Summerhill in a large 19th century building with about a hundred students aged between 5 and 18. The school has its own library, theater, sports and playing fields. What makes the school different, however, is the way it treats its students. It is a free school. Students have the right to choose when to attend class, to vote on school rules and to decide whether to take classes and exams. If they prefer going for a walk in the countryside instead of having maths, that’s OK: they will not receive any punishments.

This may sound like a new and revolutionary idea for a school, but, actually, Summerhill first opened in the 1920s. Back in the 1920s, society believed that children were immature and irresponsible and that the only way to educate them was to be strict. Children had to wear school uniforms, be silent and never ask questions. Schools regularly used physical punishment when students broke the school rules. There were too many rules, so it was difficult not to get into trouble. This way of teaching was contrary to the idea of the founder of the school, A.S. Neil. He wanted a school where children were free to make decisions and give opinions. His philosophy was that if you are able to be responsible for yourself, you’ll make decisions that are good for others. He believed all crimes and wars only happened because people were unhappy, so he created a school where children were free to be happy.

Nowadays, the rules in state secondary schools are less strict than they were a hundred years ago, but the pressure on students to work hard and to do well is greater than ever before. But this is not the case at Summerhill, where students are free to develop their imagination and personalities.

Interestingly, however, some things are soon going to change at Summerhill, Neil’s daughter, Ms. Readhead, took over his place after he died in 1973. She said she would introduce more discipline because the children were spoiled and overprotected by parents. In her opinion, children need to learn how to organize their lives themselves instead of depending on their parents.

1. Which of the following statements about Summerhill is not true?
A.It’s by the sea or not far from the seaside.
B.It’s possible to have meals at the school.
C.The school building is modern and unusual.
D.Both teachers and students stay at the school.
2. According to the passage, which one of the following “rights” do children at Summerhill have?
A.They can choose their teachers.B.They can choose not to do any exams.
C.They can have classes outside if they want.D.They can vote for their favorite classes.
3. In what way are modern state schools different from Summerhill today?
A.Their students spend more time discussing ideas than at Summerhill.
B.They don’t expect their students to do as well in exams as the ones in Summerhill.
C.Their students certainly won’t work as hard as those at Summerhill.
D.Their students are under a lot more pressure to do well in exams.
4. Which of the following best describes the “philosophy” of Summerhill School?
A.Young people need loving, kind, helpful parents.
B.Young people need adults to give them a good example.
C.Young people need the freedom to learn by themselves.
D.Young people need to have lots of interesting things to do.

10 . The University of Washington

The University of Washington, commonly referred to as simply Washington or UW, is a public research university based in Seattle, Washington, United States. Washington is one of the oldest universities on the West Coast and features one of the most highly regarded medical schools in the world. It has three campuses: the oldest and largest in the University District of Seattle and two others in Tacoma and Bothell.

In 1861, scouting began for an appropriate 10acre site in Seattle to serve as the campus for a new university. Arthur and Mary Denny donated eight acres, and fellow pioneers Edward Lander and Charlie and Mary Terry donated two acres to the university at a site on Denny’s Knoll in downtown Seattle.

The University of Washington opened officially on November 4, 1861. The school struggled at first, closing three times: in 1863 for lack of students, and again in 1867 and 1876 due to shortage of funds. However, Clara Wilt became the first graduate of UW in 1876 when she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science. By the time Washington entered the Union in 1889, both Seattle and the university had grown rapidly. A special committee headed by UW graduate Edmond Meany was created for the purpose of finding a new campus better able to serve the growing student population. The committee selected a site on Union Bay northeast of downtown. The university moved from downtown to the new campus in 1895.

The university opened campuses in Bothell and Tacoma in 1990. At first, the two campuses offered curricula for students seeking bachelor’s degrees who have already completed two years of higher education, but both schools have turned to four-year universities, accepting the first freshman class in the fall of 2006. Both campuses offer master’s degree programs as well. In 2009 the university opened an office in the Spanish city of León in collaboration with the local university.

1. What is the University of Washington worldwide famous for?
A.Its long history.B.Its medical school.
C.Its large campus.D.Its number of graduates.
2. Where was the University of Washington located when founded?
A.On Denny's Knoll.B.On Union Bay.
C.In Bothell.D.In Tacoma.
3. Why did the University of Washington have to move to a new campus in 1895?
A.Because of lack of students.
B.Because of shortage of funds.
C.Because of growing student population.
D.Because of Seattle growing too rapidly.
4. What can we infer about campuses in Bothell and Tacoma?
A.The campus in Bothell is the largest of the three campuses.
B.Both of them are located in the Spanish city of León.
C.They both began to offer bachelor's degrees after 2006.
D.They are both fouryear universities now.
