1 . When Meglan Enz was 10 years old, she decorated her bedroom walls with posters, stickers, and pages torn from magazines of anything tied to the military. Then one day there was a fire in her grandparents’ house on the family farm in Hollister, California. Among the firefighters, there was a woman. Her head was covered with a helmet and self-contained breathing apparatus (设备). And she carried different tools. Enz was shocked.
“They let you do that?” the young Enz asked as the female firefighter approached. “You’re actually a firefighter?” “Yes,” she responded. “And I hope one day, you’ll think about it because we need a lot more women in the fire service.” And with that, the woman planted a seed in Enz’s young mind. Enz is now in her third season with CAL FIRE (California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection).
While the data about the number of women in CAL FIRE only dates back to 2019, they account for about 5.5 percent of the 8,300 workforce. The job is hard for everyone — male or female. Battling wildfires requires both physical and psychological (心理的) strength. Climate change has created increasingly dry conditions across California, which has led to a rise in the intensity (强度) and time of the fires spreading across the state. Fire season now runs for as long as 10 months out of the year.
When Enz thinks back to that interaction she had as a child with the female firefighter, she realizes that moment has never left her. Recently, Enz was coming off a fire line when she met a six-year-old girl, who was very excited about seeing a female firefighter. “This is so cool,” the girl said as she looked up at Enz. Enz realized she had grown into that stranger who changed the course of her own life.

2 . Candy Funhouse, an online retailer (零售商) of candy treats from chocolate bars to gummies (软糖) and licorice (甘草糖), is hiring for a $78,000 a year, work-from-home job as its Chief Candy Officer. The job includes: “leading candy board meetings, being the head taste tester... and all things fun.”
Several thousand candidates have already applied for the position, which was posted on LInkedIn in July, said Chief Executive Officer Jamal Hejazi. He noted that he’s been surprised by such a huge number of “golden ticket” themed applications and even some carefully prepared videos of entire families offering to share the tasting duties and salary.
Candy Funhouse, based outside of Toronto, is headed by a quartet of siblings whose parents owned donut shops and a local restaurant. “My brother Mo, a candyhead, founded it in 2018 and my mother was employee No. 2”, said Hejazi, adding that he and a younger sister and brother later joined the firm.
The family hoped to distinguish their company from other highly successful online competitors such as Mars, Hershey and Amazon with a weird mix of products, no minimum orders — “we’ll sell one lollipop (棒棒糖)” — and a strong push on social media.
The company said the Chief Candy Officer position is open to applicants as young as five years old — although parental permission would likely be required. Many parents have filmed their child filling out the application and posted it online.
Hejazi also noted that reports on social media claiming that the Chief Candy Officer will be required to eat 3, 500 pieces of candy per month are incorrect. (That number represents the different varieties the company stocks.) “That would be 117 a day,” Hejazi said. “That’s too many!”

4 . Many studies have been conducted to discover the benefits of volunteering. Volunteer work means to carry out a duty or a job without expecting repayment or reward. The concept is very popular in advanced or rich countries. But in some countries, many people look at volunteering as a waste of time and effort.
One person is immediately seen as selfless and helpful when one volunteers to help out someone such as a friend, teacher or parent.
Besides, volunteering with an organization such as orphanages, community centers and other non-profit organizations allows you to interact with society at large. In addition to helping these organizations carry out their duties, you not only gain experience but can learn a variety of skills.
Thus, with so many benefits, students, in particular, should be allowed to participate volunteer activities.

5 . When office workers were sent home in the spring of 2020, managers suddenly faced a new challenge: how to monitor teams that were working remotely.
A new book, “Leading at a Distance”, by James Citrin and Darleen Derosa of Spencer Stuart, an executive-search firm, attempts to provide some practical tips for managers dealing with staff whom they do not see face to face.
The authors are not in the gloomy(阴暗的) camp that believes remote working is a disaster. They think it can be just as effective as face-to-face work.
They point out that the ability to hire people who can work anywhere means that businesses will find it easier to develop more diverse workforces. A study by McKinsey, a consultancy(咨询公司) ,found that 70% of companies thought remote hiring would help in this respect.
The book offers some useful advice. For starters, keep virtual teams small. The upper threshold(界限) seems to be around a dozen. A study found that 37% of low-performing teams had 13 or more members. In addition, the best-performing teams tended to be drawn from one department, such as marketing, rather than from across the firm.
Mr. Citrin and Ms. Derosa also warn of the dangers of virtual meetings. Just because it is possible to schedule one does not mean it is necessary or wise to do so. Poorly run meetings do not just waste time, they threaten the ability to meet deadlines, adding to workers’ stress. Long meetings should have breaks, allowing for a gap between sessions in an hourly schedule.
A few things must change when people work remotely. But not everything does. Managers will need to make a more determined effort to keep in contact with their staff. If, as most people expect, a hybrid(混合的) model emerges with remote working a couple of days a week, there will be plenty of space for interaction when managers and team members are both present.

6 . My students frequently ask me how I planned out my career to become president of Fidelity Investments. I always tell them, “There was no grand plan; I backed into my career one step at a time.” In this tough economy and ever-changing world, it is more important than ever to smartly evaluate each step in your career. To prepare for whatever surprises lie ahead, try to make choices today that will maximize your options in the future.
Gaining transferable (可转移的) knowledge begins with the choices you make at school. You want your education to provide you with the necessary skills and expertise to succeed in a wide variety of jobs.
Once you have finished your formal education, search for jobs that will allow you to further expand your transferable knowledge—to help you find your next job. Let’s say you take a job putting together airplane leases. Within a few years, you could become the world’s expert on the subject.
Remember gaining transferable knowledge is only one piece of the puzzle.
Of course, you can build your network to some degree without changing jobs.
A.You can make yourself more attractive. |
B.Gain transferable expertise and form close bonds with your colleagues. |

7 . Here are some jobs that let you make a direct impact on others’ lives.
A career advisor
Career advisors help to lighten graduates’ load, often working at high schools, colleges or universities. In addition to consulting with students to help them make career decisions, the advisors also help students practice important job-seeking skills. Although some employers prefer applicants to have a master’s degree in counseling (咨询), not all require one. Pursuing a bachelor of psychology or counseling is a great place to start.
A nutritionist
As far as industries go, health care likely offers the most jobs that help people. Nutritionists work in hospitals, schools or nursing homes to help create meal plans to improve the health of their clients (客户). Along with a bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition, clinical nutrition or a related field, you’ll need to be licensed in most states.
A personal trainer
Personal trainers work with people of all ages to build custom fitness plans. Along with performing physical assessments and creating training programs, personal trainers also inspire their clients to stick to a plan so they achieve desired results. You should have a college diploma, along with an associate’s degree in a health or fitness field, and you will need to pass an exam to receive your license.
A special education teacher
A special school can be a place for students with emotional, behavioral or learning challenges. Special education teachers are there to teach them to reach their full potential. As a special education teacher, you should plan and teach lessons according to students’ specific needs and abilities. Special education teachers must have a bachelor’s degree and a state-issued certification.

9 . Mariana Bechtel isn’t exactly someone who avoids stress. Throughout her, she has pursued high-pressure management jobs: “I’m hard core,” says the 44-yearold wife and mother of two. “I wanted to be on top at work, and I wanted to be a great mom” –one who could attend baseball games, drive and help with homework even after an hour-long commute (通勤)on workdays, more often than not, with a5 a.m. marathon-training run.
However, after months of losing sleep, dropping weight and feeling pushed to lose her mind, Mariana Bechtel decided she had to address her stress-and turn it to her advantage. The new job she recently switched to still has its share of pressure, but with more support from her boss and more flexibility in her schedule, she says she feels great.
Contrary to popular belief, stress doesn’t have to be a soul-sucking, health-damaging force. But few people know how to transform their stress into the positive kind that helps them reach their goals.
A recent research confirms that gaining control over job demands, doing work with meaning and purpose and enjoying support and encouragement from co-workers are all linked to beneficial stress. Simply changing attitudes and expectations about stress-through coaching, training or peer-support groups-can also develop the constructive kind of stress.
“Stress is paradoxical,” says Alia Crum, a research scholar. “On one hand, it can be the thing that hurts us most. On the other, it’s fundamental to psychological and physical growth. The attitude that we view and approach stress will shift the outcome.”

B.Too much stress is harmful to health. |
C.It’s hard to balance work and family. |
D.Every job has its own advantage. |
A.By refusing the boss’s demands |
B.By taking up a meaningful job. |
C.By supporting co-workers. |
D.By sticking to our attitude to stress. |
A.Stress has far-reaching effects. | B.Stress has several disadvantages. |
C.Stress has two opposite features. | D.Stress is not necessary at all. |
