After college I wanted to make a difference in the world, so I became a volunteer teacher and    1    （send）to Namibia. Honestly, my first choice wasn't Africa, but I am extremely grateful that I had the chance. So with a group of    2    （equal）eager young graduates, I went on my journey.

Schools were quite bare, and the students    3    （have）tiring days, walking miles to get to school, often barefoot. With their mountain    4    work at home, few    5    （possession）and little opportunity, these children were joyful, which I admired.

According to a new survey, people who have owned pets may be more professionally    1    (success), and this is absolutely good news for ambitious pet parents.

The survey    2    (perform) by Kelton Global Research for Banfield Pet Hospital. The researchers surveyed 857 adults in the United States with    3    variety of careers. Among the C-suite executives (高管) surveyed, 93 percent grew with a pet in their home, with 78 percent    4     (hold) that growing up with a pet helped cause their career success as an adult.

So, how exactly does pet ownership cause career success? According to Banfield’s research, executives reported that their pet helped teach them lessons like    5    (responsible), creativity, sympathy and organization,    6    have all been invaluable in the business world.

Kyrgyzstan(吉尔吉斯斯坦) is a mountainous country where nearly two thirds of the people live in rural areas. The UN notes that the local economy depends     1    (heavy)on farming. So it is rare for any Kyrgyz to choose technology     2     a career path.

The UN Development Programme studied records about the country’s college     3    (graduate)in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, construction and manufacturing. It found that women make up less than 10 percent of those graduates.

Nineteen-year-old Alina Anisimova,     4     is a computer programmer, says some girls don’t have the courage to take on such studies because it is not common in their country. And, she also says a majority of parents discourage their daughters from     5    (study)these subjects. Girls in her country are expected     6     (marry) instead of having careers. Nearly one in 10 girls in Kyrgyzstan is married before the age of 18, notes the international aid group Girls Not Brides. Many high school students in the United States get training in construction skills by building real houses. The project     1     (run) by the Waterloo Career Center. The center offers students different programs designed     2     (prepare) them for careers in technical fields.

Students from the Waterloo Community School District     3     (recent) took part in construction training that centered on the skill of masonry (砖石建筑)—work done with stone, brick or concrete materials.
