People tend to think that productivity involves doing several things at once, but according to Cal Newport, the secret to success is the opposite of multitasking. Newport is the author of Deep Work, a book that describes the benefits of focusing on one thing and doing it with     1    .

Newport defines deep work as “the ability to focus without     2     on a cognitively (认知地) demanding task.” It’s the opposite of shallow work, which is made up of simple tasks that are usually     3     while distracted.

According to Newport, deep work is a(n)     4     skill in today’s economy. It allows you to learn difficult things quickly and produce at a high level. Most people are distracted when they work, so you learn to work without distraction, that gives you     5    . Deep work enables you to produce to the best of your ability and acquire new skills quickly. Developing excellence in one’s craft can be a deeply     6     try. But deep work itself is also a skill, which means the more time you spend at it, the easier it gets. Moreover, if you only work at a shallow level, your ability to do deep work decreases.

So how do you conduct deep work into your work life or your studies? It’s essentially important to     7     deep work into your day. Otherwise, it’s easy to let your time fill up with shallow work. Newport recommends doing deep work as your first task of the day. That way you get it done before distractions build up. Shallow work does need to get done, but if you save it for later in the day, you can get your deep work done, too.

Scheduling deep work sessions for the same time every day can turn them into a habit. This makes it easier to spend time on them.

Because deep work is by definition cognitively demanding, you won’t be able to do it all day. Beginners can usually only focus on deep work for     8     an hour, and even experts have trouble going more than four hours. So set     9     goals for yourself. If you really focus, you’ll be surprised at how much you accomplish in a few hours.

By focusing on     10     sessions of deep work, you can get more done in less time and feel more satisfied.

The Best Company to Work For

Every year, Fortune magazine publishes a list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For”. Howdoes the magazine choose the companies? Firstly, it uses a survey: 350 employees answer 57 questions about their company. Secondly, Fortune looks at important     1     of companies: for example, pay, benefits, and communication between workers and management. Finally, the magazine must     2       the results to find its Top 100.

Wegmans Food Markets, which ranks No. 1 on the list, has a motto (座右铭) , “Employees first, customers second”, and it is also one of the 50 largest private companies in the US, with annual sales of $3. 6 billion, according to Forbes magazine. Apparently, being good to your employees is no     3     to making money.

How much of Wegmans’ success is due to the company’s policies? “Up to a point, the success is because of the freedom they give us,” says one employee. “On the other hand, no company gets rich just by not being     4     to its employees. Wegmans has great marketing strategies and it’s     5     within the community. I’ve been here for 15 years. Looking back, I’d say that the company’s     6     for customers’ benefits, such as the Shoppers’ Club electronic discount programme in the 1990s, have been just as important as the benefits to staff.”

But the employee benefits are     7    . Fundamentally, Wegmans believes in     8     development. As well as scholarships, the company gives its employees business opportunities. For years, one employee made delicious cookies for her colleagues. She     9     started selling the cookies in Wegmans. ‘I just asked the manager,’ she says. ‘While looking back, I think I should have asked earlier. I could have made more money!’

The staff’s freedom to make decisions is another thing you won’t find everywhere. Essentially, Wegmans wants its workers to do almost anything to     10     the customers. Believe it or not, an employee once cooked a Thanksgiving turkey in the store for a customer because the woman’s turkey, bought in Wegmans, was too big for her oven.

Zhang Yuyao, a 3D environmental artist in Canada with two years of working experience,     1     herself when seeing her name on the staff list of The Mandalorian.

Zhang is currently working for a visual effect company responsible for the Avatar series. “What we do is to trick people’s eyes,” she said, “we start by choosing fragments (碎片) from the real world.” For example, when building a scene of the ancient Greek god Zeus’s palace, the artists use     2     of pillars (柱子) from the pictures of Greek-style temples to make the scene more     3     . 10 . Fill in each blank with a proper word given in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word that you do not need.
A. participate       B. voice       C. simply       D. cooperative       E. scholarship       F. matter
G. discourage       H. neglect       I. incredibly       J. exclusive       K. curious

There is an obvious gender gap in technology. For some, the gender gap is simply a case of discrimination — boys won’t let girls join their technology clubs. For others, it’s a case of     1     —girls aren’t encouraged to study technology subjects. Still for others, it’s     2     a question of choice — girls aren’t interested in technology and don’t want to work in these industries.

All three of these reasons make some sense. Men have a different way of interacting with each other. There is more competition to establish their place on the “team”. Women tend to be more     3     and may feel uncomfortable and unappreciated working in this kind of atmosphere. Neglect is also a problem since STEM subjects are still considered boy subjects. And then there is the     4     of choice. Girls, in general, would rather study subjects and find jobs where they can work with people (medicine, business, etc.) rather than with “things” (building a bridge, writing computer code, etc.).

Regardless of the reasons for the gender gap, more and more girls are seeing it as a problem. Katy Yu, a 17-year-old student, does not believe that technology should be a(n)     5     boys’ club and she’s out to prove that girls can be tech-savvy (精通技术的), too.

The girl taught herself how to write code. She learned computer languages well enough to win a     6     in the Swift Student Challenge at Apple’s 2020 World Wide Developers Conference. She also became the only Chinese invited to     7     in a video conference call with Tim Cook.

Katy is doing more than that. She wants to help other girls overcome the barriers — real or imagined — which may     8     them from studying computer coding. This past summer, she organized a workshop to provide interested girls with free coding classes. “When more and more women are in science and technology, becoming senior talent and managers, it increases their     9     and job opportunities in these fields,” she says.

In her own way, Katy is trying to break one of the gender stereotypes (模式化形象) that hold women back. Girls, you should remember that you can be problem solvers,     10     explorers, and risk takers. If that is how you walk into every computer science classroom, stereotyped threats won’t have the power to push you out of the industry you love.
