1 . There are many ways to find a job. It can be as easy as walking into a neighborhood store to look at its announcement board. Local stores often have areas where people can put small signs telling what kind of service they need or can provide. Such services include caring for children or cleaning houses.

Or, job searchers can look in the newspaper. Local newspapers have employment announcements placed by companies seeking workers.

Another popular tool for finding jobs is the Internet. For example, people in four hundred and fifty cities around the world can use the Craigslist website to buy objects, meet people or find a job. Craigslist says that it receives two million new job listings each month.

Another useful way to find a job is through a college or university. For example, students at the University of Texas in Austin can go to the Career Exploration Center to get help in finding a job. Of course, booking for a job requires knowing what kind of work you want to do. For example, there is a book called What Color Is Your Parachute? by Richard Bolles. This book has been helping people choose a career since it was first published in 1970.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。Andrea Speranza是一名女性消防员,多年来她一直致力于鼓励其他年轻女性像她一样成为消防员。

3 . Andrea Speranza wanted to be a firefighter long before she had the right word for her wish. After one childhood adventure at a construction site ended with an iron nail embedded (嵌入) in her leg and an emergency call to the fire department, she found herself in awe. “As they gave me the medical treatment, I thought they could help everybody and do anything,” says the now 52-year-old.

In 2000, Andréa Speranza achieved her dream of becoming a firefighter joining the Halifax Regional Fire Service. Her job was exactly as satisfying as she imagined it would be, except for one thing: she still hadn’t seen another woman in her role — not in a magazine, not on television, not in real life. Speranza decided that she wanted to help young women see that they, too, could have a career like hers.

The result was Camp Courage, a program for girls aged 15 to 19 who want to learn more about firefighting. In 2006, Speranza and about 20 volunteers welcomed their first 17 participants, recruiting (招募) attendees through advertising in schools. Over the course of eight days, the girls discovered the ins and outs of being first. responders: learning how to put out fires, deliver first aid and even use the jaws of life (救生钳) on a car.

Camp Courage now runs one session every year in Halifax and is free to attend. To offset costs, Speranza and her fellow campers fundraise by holding everything from car washes to comedy nights. Hopeful campers must also submit an essay describing how they plan to help their community, or a specific individual in need. And they have to deliver on the plan—from building a bench for a senior at a bus stop to launching a local chapter of the Kids Help Phone.

Hundreds of girls have passed through Camp Courage, and 36 percent are doing exactly what 52-year-old Speranza hoped they would: working as first responders across the country. This past summer, the camp held its first session for young women in Halifax, as well as its first national camp in Calgary with plans to roll out more in 2023.

B.The early bird catches the worm.

4 . When I was at school, I hated art. Growing up in north Wales, I was not able to rate higher than an E in my final exams. I wasn’t too upset; I thought I wasn’t going to choose it as a career.

By the time I was about four, I started sleepwalking. At night, I used to go under the stairs and scribble (乱画) on the wall. When I was 15, I was no longer just making scribbles. I was drawing anything from pictures of Marilyn Monroe to unrealistic paintings. I showed some to my art teachers. They said: “Why can’t you do this in class?” It was something I struggled to understand myself. I tried so hard to draw when I was awake, practising and using the same tools. But no matter what I did, I was unable to recreate the drawings.

Once I left school, I became a nurse, mainly helping people with brain injuries. I also met my partner. He is unbelievably supportive of my art and sleepwalking habits—he often films me as I work. And when I begin to paint in my sleep, I’ll use any tools I can find, sometimes knives and forks. That’s the only thing that worries my partner—that I’ll accidentally hurt myself. I have gone to various sleep clinics to try to get to the bottom of what’s happening, but nothing out of the ordinary was found health-wise. Alcohol or lack of sleep does bring the sleepwalking on more, though, so I am careful about that.

I have learned to hug my unusual talent and set up my first art exhibition in 2007 at my local in library to raise money for cancer research. Within a week, I had 160 calls from different media outlets and organizations wanting to hear about my art. I was over the moon. I then decided to leave my very fulfilling job in nursing and become a full-time artist.

1. Why wasn’t the author upset about her art final exams?
A.She got used to her E in art.B.She had little interest in her study.
C.She was confident in herself.D.She was unwilling to work in art field.
2. What did art teachers think of the author’s sleepwalking paintings?
A.They felt worried about them.B.They expressed doubt about them.
C.They were indifferent about them.D.They showed confidence about them.
3. What does the underlined phrase “over the moon” probably mean in last paragraph?
A.Extremely pleased.B.Really concerned.C.Highly annoyed.D.Greatly shocked.
4. What can we infer about the author from the text?
A.She always enjoys painting.B.She is often injured by sleepwalking.
C.She has no trouble in sleepwalking now.D.She makes full use of her sleepwalking talent.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。作者通过这篇文章向我们描述了优秀的科学家的性格特点。

8 . Characteristics of an excellent scientist

The Free Dictionary defines(定义) a scientist as a person having professional knowledge on one or more sciences, especially natural science or physical science.     1     Let’s look at some characteristics of an excellent scientist.

Curiosity.

2     Scientists such as Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse discovered things mainly because they wanted to know how things worked. If a scientist doesn’t have the drive to ask questions or even wonder, then he/ she never gets to the first stage of the scientific process.

Patience.

3     There are very few jobs that take longer than this one. Even if you think you have received some education on science, you still have a lot of scientific research to do. If you’re an instant-gratification (及时满足的) type of person, this may not be the best choice for you.

Ethical (道德的)qualities.

In order to truly discover and use knowledge for the greater good, a scientist must have a desire to improve people’s life as well as the environment, since they are linked and they can affect each other in the long run. A scientist must report findings honestly regardless of personal or outside commercial (商业的) interests. Sticking to an old belief contradicted(反驳)by evidence is dishonest.     4

Working habits.

An excellent scientist even takes notes of the smallest observation, keeping it in mind and recording it.     5     He/ She also needs to communicate thoughts on paper and verbally. Networking skills connect him/ her with colleagues working on similar projects where he/ she may discover something new.

A.Becoming a scientist takes a long time.
B.An excellent scientist must be very curious about things.
C.It also defines a scientist as someone who uses scientific methods.

9 . Run! LunchDelivery Men!

It’s lunch time, and Guo Ziyang is on a mission: deliver seven hot meal orders in an hour.

He dashes into a downtown highrise, carrying a plastic container of hot beef noodles. There is no time to wait for the right elevator. He hops into the first one that opens, jumps out at the last stop and begins running up the stairs. After a quick handoff to the customer, he races down 20 flights.     1     Across China’s biggest cities, the scene has become as familiar as crowded subways.     2     Meals appear with just a few taps on a smartphone. With the major delivery services offering similar pricing strategies and food choices, the burden of competition has fallen largely on the speed of the delivery people, popularly known as Waimai Xiaoge, or “Brother Takeaway”.

Guo said he wolfs down four or five steamed buns before starting work every morning. “You’ll need the energy for various delivery missions, ” he said. “Sometimes, the buildings you deliver to don’t have elevators.     3     Then, you have to climb ten flights of stairs.”

Guo works around Shanghai’s central business district. He joined Eleme only last year.     4     With a foodwarmer box tied to his scooter, Guo tears through traffic, rushes past pedestrians and avoid bumps that might spill soup dishes. In less than two hours, he has made stops at a hospital, a hair salon, a hotel room and several highrises. Six orders an hour is the norm for the lunchtime rush, but Guo said he is sometimes called upon to deliver ten meals. “    5     You just have to apologize, ” he said.

Nevertheless, Guo said he thrives on deadline pressure. “I’m the kind of person who likes challenging work, ” he added.

A.One order down, six to go.
B.Sometimes, the elevators are crowded and take a long time.
C.But he has memorized the layouts of all the buildings in his area.
D.That’s really difficult, and if you arrive late, customers get angry.
E.The arrival of fooddelivery apps has transformed the country’s lunchtime culture.
F.The tradition of going out for a meal has been under pressure from the fast pace of urban life.
G.Sometimes, people ask them to pick up cigarettes, alcohol and other items, which they aren’t supposed to do.

10 . Volunteering in your community gives you a chance to give back. You’ll feel that you are volunteering your time, and a local organization will benefit, too. Below are some tips on finding an organization that’s a good fit for you.

When you decide to volunteer, you may choose the first volunteer opportunity you come across.     1     When looking for an organization to volunteer at, try to pick one with a cause that arouses your passions.

Look for more than just the “standard” volunteer organization. When you think about volunteering, your mind may immediately focus on organizations such as soup kitchens, homeless shelters, or food banks. While those organizations are very worthy of your time, you may find other opportunities better fit your personality or skill set.     2     For example, you may find that volunteering with your local parks and youth organizations may be more to your liking.

3     Much like job search sites, you can use volunteer sites to help you find volunteer opportunities in your area. Organizations list volunteer openings on their websites, and you can search through and narrow them down.

4     You may find one of them has the perfect opportunity for you, and it may be easier to volunteer with someone you know at first. Volunteering with friends can make it more enjoyable because you’re with people you know and have fun with.

Pick an organization that will teach you something new. The first objective of volunteering is to help an organization and your community. However, volunteer opportunities can also benefit you. They can give you career experience you don’t have.     5

A.Use a volunteer site to find a good match.
B.Some organizations will also offer you training and career development.
C.If that doesn’t work, consider finding another opportunity somewhere else.
D.These are the ones that you may not think of immediately but that still need help.
E.If you can’t narrow down the choices, start asking people you know where they volunteer.
F.Knowing the length of time you want to commit to can also help you choose an organization.
G.However, you’re likely to be happier at an organization that supports a cause you care about.
