We had a lot of funs together. When I returned back to school, I missed the students so much. They like me but some of them have kept in touch with me ever since. 8 . So often we find ourselves on autopilot—waking up in the same home, putting on the same clothes and taking the same transportation to the same-old job.    1    And while it’s perfectly natural for humans to stick to routine, there’s much to be discovered beyond the limits of our comfort zones.

There is no exception to a man aged 53.    2    He knew it was going to be hard to find another job. He also knew it was now or never to pursue his lifelong dream of owning his own restaurant. But he was too old to compete with the young and too weak to do any labor work.

3    He didn’t want to spend his rest life sitting around and feeling pity for himself. Also, Mrs. Mockenhaupt actively encouraged him to move on, considering it a perfect chance for two of them to start their own business with plenty of time and without the disturbance of children.

4    Brian found just what he wanted eight blocks from home—an existing cafe that was underperforming and whose owner was highly motivated to get out of his lease (租期).    5    But the problem was that he had never financially planned for this day. He had to borrow money from friends and relatives. After that, he changed the name to Black Dog Coffee, and made it alive again. Eighteen years later, they’re still there and doing better than ever. Brian says he’s extremely grateful for the decision to make a change.

A.Then came the opportunity.
B.The thought filled him with anxiety.
C.That was exactly what Brian needed.
D.Even our New Year’s decisions to change hardly make it.
E.With the support of his family, he took a job in the local cafe.
F.Several weeks after consideration, he decided to have a change.
G.Brian Mockenhaupt got laid off from a senior management position.

9 . At just 40 years old,hip-hop star Kasseem Dean, more popularly known as Swizz Beatz, has amassed(积累)a track record, lifestyle and nearly$70 million net worth that would inspire most of us to retire early. So why does Dean continue to both work extremely hard and try projects that come with the risk of rejection?

During our interview for Uncommon Drive,a video series for USA&Main that seeks to find out the motivations and magic of world-class business people,Dean provided a memorable answer:“You only have so much time—once it’s gone you don’t get it back.Don’t focus on money;focus on building something greater than yourself. If you’re not making history, you’re wasting your time on Earth.”

When you look at his answer, you will learn two important lessons. The first is in“making history”.Doing so requires awareness. You must fully understand what has and has not been achieved in the market you’ve entered.Dean makes every effort with the goal of creating something important that has not been done before and will be remembered for its impact beyond his years.

The second part of his statement is just as powerful. In this interview,he never once said he is“trying”to make history.Instead,he has told himself that no matter what difficulty there is,it’s just going to happen.“I’m going to make history.”Dean said.

After talking to Dean for nearly 45 minutes,it was clear to me that he has removed all ego(自我)from a statement that might otherwise be misread as false pride.I believe it’s a brilliant hack—rather than focus on all the reasons why a project can’t be realized,he has convinced himself of the possibility.

A.His desire to be famous.

A.He takes a pride in his work.

D.He gets prepared for his career.
4. What’s the title of the text?
A.How does Kasseem Dean face rejection?

10 . In the future, we will be competing against medically-enhanced workers who can work longer and harder than us. Artificial intelligence will make it easier to monitor our every move in the office. This may sound like science fiction, but it’s a likely _______, according to a new report by professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The report, which _______ a team of science researchers and a survey of more than 10,000 workers based in China, Germany, India, the U.K., and the U.S., predicts that rapid advances in technology, resource _______, and population demographics are among the key forces that would radically _______ the future of work by 2030.

According to PwC, these forces will result in four potential futures: one where “humans come first,” one where “innovation _______,” one where “companies care,” and one where “corporate is king.”

In the future world where corporations reign, PwC states that “human effort is _______ through sophisticated use of physical and medical enhancement techniques and equipment, and workers’ performance and _______ are measured, monitored and analysed at every step. A new breed of elite super-workers emerges.”

This is a world where performance is everything, and workers will need to create every _______ to stay ahead. This may sound like a stressful objective, but the majority of people surveyed _______ the challenge.

Seventy percent of the workers surveyed said that they would undergo ________ to improve their body and mind if it would improve their chances of employment. This could be because we believe it’s up to us to improve our careers — even if that means pill-popping performance-enhancing drugs. Of those surveyed, 74% said it was their individual ________ “to update their skills rather than relying on any employer.”

To visualize this ________ future, PwC created a mock news article reporting from 2030 that detailed the first large-scale use of brain-enhancing drugs in the workplace.

But you don’t need a fake news report to see this future; real news reports about augmented bodies in the office have existed for some time. Companies in the U.S. and Europe are already offering microchip implants to workers, so they can enter company buildings and get their chips from the vending machine with the ________ of a hand.

PwC predicts that the idea of a cyborg workforce will go from science fiction novelty to mainstream in the next few decades.

“So implants at work are already possible and happening and people will use it ________ to pay for things and to get on to buses and public transport. Why would they not 10 years later go, sure, put one in my brain to make me think harder or for ________ ?” Jon Williams, PwC’s people and organizations division leader told The Australian about its survey. “It’s just natural progression.”
