1 . In the future, we will be competing against medically-enhanced workers who can work longer and harder than us. Artificial intelligence will make it easier to monitor our every move in the office. This may sound like science fiction, but it’s a likely _______, according to a new report by professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The report, which _______ a team of science researchers and a survey of more than 10,000 workers based in China, Germany, India, the U.K., and the U.S., predicts that rapid advances in technology, resource _______, and population demographics are among the key forces that would radically _______ the future of work by 2030.

According to PwC, these forces will result in four potential futures: one where “humans come first,” one where “innovation _______,” one where “companies care,” and one where “corporate is king.”

In the future world where corporations reign, PwC states that “human effort is _______ through sophisticated use of physical and medical enhancement techniques and equipment, and workers’ performance and _______ are measured, monitored and analysed at every step. A new breed of elite super-workers emerges.”

This is a world where performance is everything, and workers will need to create every _______ to stay ahead. This may sound like a stressful objective, but the majority of people surveyed _______ the challenge.

Seventy percent of the workers surveyed said that they would undergo ________ to improve their body and mind if it would improve their chances of employment. This could be because we believe it’s up to us to improve our careers — even if that means pill-popping performance-enhancing drugs. Of those surveyed, 74% said it was their individual ________ “to update their skills rather than relying on any employer.”

To visualize this ________ future, PwC created a mock news article reporting from 2030 that detailed the first large-scale use of brain-enhancing drugs in the workplace.

But you don’t need a fake news report to see this future; real news reports about augmented bodies in the office have existed for some time. Companies in the U.S. and Europe are already offering microchip implants to workers, so they can enter company buildings and get their chips from the vending machine with the ________ of a hand.

PwC predicts that the idea of a cyborg workforce will go from science fiction novelty to mainstream in the next few decades.

“So implants at work are already possible and happening and people will use it ________ to pay for things and to get on to buses and public transport. Why would they not 10 years later go, sure, put one in my brain to make me think harder or for ________ ?” Jon Williams, PwC’s people and organizations division leader told The Australian about its survey. “It’s just natural progression.”

2 . Among the coronavirus’s many effects is a boom (突然风靡的时期) in remote workers, who try to get accustomed to a work-from-home lifestyle. Matt Mullenweg, CEO of a software company, said that “it might offer an opportunity for many companies to finally build a culture that allows long-overdue work flexibility.”     1

Research shows that remote workers gain in productivity. A study led by the Stanford professor Nicholas Bloom examined remote workers at a Chinese travel agency.     2     But research also shows that they often miss in creativity thinking. Steve Jobs believed that Apple employees’ best work came from accidentally bumping into other people.     3     Mr. Jobs said, “You run into someone, you ask what they’re doing, you say ‘Wow,’ and soon you’re cooking up all sorts of ideas.”

4     That’s a good thing if you’re a boss looking to squeeze extra efficiency out of your employees, but less ideal if you’re someone trying to achieve some work-life balance. Mr. Bock, who was previously Google’s top human resources officer, said that for most people, balancing office work with remote work is good.     5     It’s enough to participate in office culture, with some time reserved for deep, focused work.

A.Remote workers also tend to take fewer sick days.
B.Some people are less productive if they work at home.
C.Creativity comes from random meetings and discussions.
D.So it will be an exciting time for some fans of remote work.
E.Many people find it hard to balance their work and their home lives.
F.It found that they were 13 percent more efficient than the office-based ones.
G.The perfect amount of work-from-home time is one and a half days per week.

10 . I climb for all women

Between raising two daughters and working as a dishwasher at Whole Foods, the native of Nepal Lhakpa Sherpa just doesn’t have time for training to climb Qomolangma, known in the West as Mount Everest.     1     And she hopes to outdo herself this month again.

Lhakpa is recognized by Guinness World Records and is well known in mountaineering circles.     2     But as a girl growing up in the Sherpa ethnic community, she wasn’t allowed to attend school. Without a formal education, she has taken a job as a dishwasher to give her daughters and now-grown son a chance at a better life in the United States.

3     Sherpa girls were discouraged from climbing. Becoming a climber was harder, especially after the first Nepali woman to reach the summit, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, died on her way down the mountain in 1993. Lhakpa joined an expedition of five women in 2000 who convinced the government to give them a permit.     4

Last month, her adopted home town of West Hartford claimed her to be “Queen of Mount Everest”. Despite being known as “Queen of Mount Everest”, to many of her co-workers, she’s just Lhakpa, a very humble person. “I don’t need to be famous.     5     There is no difference in climbing a mountain. I climb for all women. I want to keep doing my sport. If I don’t do my sport, I feel tired. I want to push my limits.”

A.However, she served as a porter.
B.Even so, she has done it a record eight times.
C.I want to show that a woman can do men’s jobs.
D.Lhakpa was used to overcoming difficult situations.
E.She would have liked to be a doctor or an airplane pilot.
F.She gets up most days at 6 am to walk her two daughters to school.
G.She was the first Nepali woman to reach the summit and return alive.
