3 . During the winter break, I found my dad’s old CD player in a drawer that I had never seen before. It reminded me of the three CDs I recently bought from Mostly Books, a second-hand media store on South Street. I knew I could put the player to good use with them.

However, I was a naughty kid who broke closet doors and shelves, so my dad was often unwilling to let me borrow his things. I couldn’t decide whether to ask my dad about using the player. “Can you help me with your old CD player? I want to play some CDs,” I finally asked him after walking into his home office that day. Despite my worries, my dad said yes.

Growing up, I felt that my dad disagreed with nearly everything I did. I was frightened to take his advice because listening to him felt like going against my own ideas.

That day I looked at his office wall and saw a painting and he told me he bought it in the 1990s for a couple thousand dollars. Imagining him buying the artwork challenged my idea of him being too frugal (节俭的) and boring (没有情调的) to spend so much money on art.

This new side of my dad encouraged me to finally take the time to look for our similarities. I discovered how similar we really are while fixing the CD player with my dad, which helped me see him as someone I could relate to, instead of someone to avoid. Watching my dad prepare his old CD player for use was my first step toward understanding him. I observed several of his characters that I recognized in myself, like persistence, patience and calmness. Seeing these characters in my dad showed me how similar we are, which lowered the defenses (防御) I built against him, allowing our relationship to heal (愈合).

1. Why couldn’t the author decide whether to ask his dad about using the player at first?
A.He had no CDs to play then.
B.He feared his dad would say no.
C.He figured the CD player was broken.
D.He was afraid he’d break the CD player.
2. What was the problem between the author and his father?
A.They often had different views.
B.They hardly talked to each other.
C.They had no similar personalities.
D.They were shy to speak for themselves.
3. What did the author most probably realize after knowing about the painting?
A.He should challenge his father.
B.His father was very good at art.
C.His father was a really boring man.
D.He might not really know about his father.
4. What happened between the author and his father in the end?
A.They often argued with each other.
B.They greatly misunderstood each other.
C.They got on with each other much better.
D.They built great defenses against each other.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍怎样做有耐心的父母。

6 . How to Be a Patient Parent

Being a parent is hard work, and sometimes it’s difficult to stay patient with your children. Bad behavior on top of the normal stress of life can cause you to lose your temper sometimes. We all want to be loving parents and have our children respect us instead of fearing us.     1     You can use them to keep your cool and prevent doing something you will regret.

2     When you feel your anger start to boil over, count to ten slowly. This gives you time to calm down a bit and it will teach you to control your impulses. When you are done counting, take three deep breaths before you speak. You will feel the tension melt away with each breath.

Always pretend like people are watching you when you have to deal with a problem with your kids.     3     Also, think of someone you know who is very patient and ask yourself what they would do in this situation.

You can also walk away and take a break. Taking a five- to ten-minute break will give you time to cool off and really plan what you are going to say and do. This is much better than acting in the moment. Take the opportunity to teach them something.     4     Use this opportunity to help them improve themselves.

When all else fails, laugh. Life does not always have to be so serious. There are times when a battle just is not worth fighting. This is the only time we will have with our kids and it should be as fun as we can make it, because we will never get another chance to relive these years.     5

A.You can first do two exercises together.
B.Count the numbers quickly and loudly.
C.Several methods can be used to control anger.
D.Keep that in mind when you are trying to handle a situation.
E.During such stressful times, children will challenge limits.
F.Remember they are just kids and that they are not perfect.
G.You are less likely to over-react when others are beside you.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I watched my dad scowl (绷着脸) as he listened to the voice coming through the telephone receiver. I heard him say, “Yes, Miss Beisner,” and “I understand what you’re saying, Miss Beisner. I appreciate you sharing this information. We’ll see what we can do about the situation. Thank you for calling. Goodbye.”

Miss Beisner was my first-grade teacher, and I loved her. I thought she felt the same about me, but now I was beginning to wonder. The tone of Dad’s voice, the redness in his cheeks, and his repeated clenching. And unclenching of fists made it pretty clear. This was not a warm and fuzzy good news-from-the-teacher call.

As I was deciding whether I should lock myself in my bedroom for the rest of my life or run away from home, Dad hung up the phone. “Jacquie, come here and sit down. We need to talk.”

Uh-oh. When Dad said, “We need to talk,” it meant he needed to talk, and I needed to listen.

I shuffled (拖着脚走) over to the well-worn brown chair in the corner of the living room, plopped down, and waited to hear the nature of my crime.

Dad told me that Miss Beisner thought I was bright but not working up to my ability. She said I had strong verbal skills but weak study habits. Translation: I never closed my mouth, and I seldom opened a book. Apparently, my failure to memorize the addition facts, or even attempt to, was more than she was willing to put up with. Hence, the telephone call.

Dad ended our one-way conversation with a verbal outline for his plan of attack. Bubbles, our Toy Manchester Terrier, was going to teach me math. Silently, I thought, No way is any dumb dog going to teach me how to add, not even our beloved Bubbles. Out loud, I said, “How?”

Dad summoned Bubbles from her bed near the stove and commanded her to sit. “Bubbles,” Dad said, “how much is five plus three?” Bubbles let out eight loud, crisp barks.

I was incredulous (满腹狐疑的). I couldn’t understand how a dog could add, and I was more than a little embarrassed by the fact that the family dog was smarter than me.
